Nice and fun ideia.

Exactly. And Wyrd's not the only company to have "boosters" like that either.

As for the game itself, amusing concept but I think I'd like to see how it plays. Also, the starter price is a bit more than I'd feel comfortable shelling out at this time.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Combining things can be AWESOME like Oreos and Milkshakes. Yes....oh yes.

Also, I MUST have patchwork pigs so full of win and I don't care if its embarrassing.

Agreed.

Fantasy Flight Games and Steve Jackson Games have a multitude of products consisting of a "base game" with multiple expansions. They're not so much "boosters" in the Star Wars Miniatures and Heroclix sense but more like optional, small expansions. Structuring it like this keeps the already high-cost base game cheaper.

Is anyone else getting confused between Wyrd's game Puppet Wars and the online bits-maker Puppet's War?

ADB's Federation Commander does the same thing, providing additional ship display charts for each release.

Booster has essentially come to mean "randomized box/bag of collectible game goodies", but that's only because the collectible games make the most use of it.

Yes.

Obviously opinions vary and in some instances different countries get different RRP like Aus and say ...GW stuff

But I have to ask what makes Malifaux expensive to you. A starter box is about $35US and the Aussie price is based on this (cheaper due to aus$ being stronger ....) and that pack gives you most of what you need. A crew averages about 6-12 mini's and the rules are free. So you might pick up a couple of blisters that will set you back between $9 and $16 for a standard clamshell.

I find malifaux to be great value for money but then again, It might be becasue I'm using 40k as a price comaprison.

I will give you that Puppet Wars is pricier then Mal but seriously there is zombified 'working girl' in puppet form in the box!

These are some of the pictures I enjoy.

A puppet wars mini is literally half the price of a Malifaux mini.

Granted, the core box is 85 bucks, but it comes with 18 metal minis (which comes out to 4.66 per model) and that's assuming all you are paying for are the models. It also has board, tokens, decks, rules, etc. And it's enough for two people, unlike a single Malifaux starter.

The boosters work out to 4 dollars a model.

The rules are also free and once one person in your group has a board, you don't need to bother with the starter.

I mean, I get what you're saying, it's a seemingly hefty initial investment, but realistically I see myself spending far less on this game than on Malifaux, assuming I play them both equally.

Part of wargaming is collecting stuff surely?

Meaning that there is a collectablity to there or indeed any other range of minis?

I like the concept and the models do appeal too me as a painter too.

Might give this a good look when it is released.

The $85 is not an issue for me at all. I think it's a very good price for what you get. I was just saying start up is higher the Mal but if you checked out my whole post I was just asking another user 'Whocares' how he found Malifaux to be expensive as I think it's not only great value for money but also a great game.

i have no doubt puppet wars will be too.

There's actually kind of an interesting thread on that on their forums:

http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=23004

Apparently, they are planning on releasing different colored bases so you can tell your puppets from your opponent's without painting them, official events won't require paint, and there's some interesting discussion on just priming and washing to bring out the details and differentiating puppets with minimal effort.

Nothing to stop people who want to paint them, though.

That looks super bland...and expensive, relatively speaking.

Are they they going to give the puppets Malifaux rules as well?

Wyrd's position is that any model that made by Wyrd that represents a model in the game is legal to play Malifaux with. So if I wanted to use a puppet Executioner in Malifaux it's completely legal.

In fact, I thought I heard Eric Johns say that the first run of Puppet Wars has Malifaux stat cards in them for some of the puppets, apparently enough to field an entire crew.

Yeah when you buy puppet wars stuff you get the Malifaux stat cards for the corresponding puppets.

Played this at GenCon and it's ok. I would say give it a chance and you might like it. I LOVE Malifaux, but this was just not as exciting. I played the demo and didn't have all the puppets available to make a list, just Seamus, a punk zombie, and a silurid.

Most of the masters are similarly themed to their corresponding Malifaux master. For instance, Lady J is good at CC. Seamus is really hard to kill and buffs other Ressurectionist stuff. But there are some differences.

Looking at the rules for some of the other puppets it could get pretty crazy with some of the different combos and stuff. Just wasn't super stoked. The puppet minis are freaking great and I would totally run a puppet army in Malifaux. Just be prepared to buy some extra bases so you can swap out your 30mm bases for 40's and 50's where necessary.

The Mechanic of starting with just your master and then having to "wake-up" the other puppets is pretty good, but can take a while to get your full force on the board. And in the mean time, some of your puppets might be killed, which might make you consider bringing duplicates of certain puppets. But obtaining duplicates is kinda hard as mentioned previously.

What this game REALLY needs is some 3d Terrain. Right now you use these smokey grey smei-transparent plastic discs to represent terrain, which in this game ammounts to furniture and stumps and trees which are impassable to the tiny puppets. Likewise the objective markers (referred to as "workbenches") are just colored discs.

This is a spot on review which when combined with the entry cost really made me shy away from a purchase.

Beyond the minis (which are tiny) it felt cheap for the price point givent the type/quality of board game being produced by other manufacturers in a similar price range. Combine this with the clunky play mechanics which felt more like Malifaux Minus vs. a board game.. I was underwhelmed.

I think the upgrade mechanic is pretty cool and unique. And list building looks quite fun.

If you compare the list of puppets' names to the pics of the Malifaux model, that could help.

ex., the Seamus puppet has a tophat, just like the Malifaux mini.

I don't think there are pics of all the individual puppets yet.

Yeah I was doing that but checking malifaux full range is a bit to much and I gave up.

I bought mine in person at gencon so I just had to pick them up and turn them over, but I can only find art for the front of the boxes...

There is a list of the contents in Wyrds online store though:

I'll see if I can just take a picture here sometime of the back of the boxes.

If you would be so kind to take the back pictures it would be extremely useful. Thank you!
That's something WYRD should fix asap because not everyone is familiar with the names of the malifaux miniatures and figuring out what is each of the puppets boosters is a bit time consuming process.

BTW were you lucky and got a teddy on your boosters?
