I still just stick to GW, despite their pricing I haven't found a decent alternative that doesn't flood the detail, fuzz up or give me a gloss finish.

Besides Army Painter cost just as much as GW.

If its black primer your after go to your nearest Halfords. Their 'matt black' is brilliant as a primer, I've been using it for years. Its also cheaper than GW and a larger size can...

Has anyone here got any experience with the metal Army Painter spray? I'm thinking of picking it p to make painting my Cygnar Storm Knights (and future Precursor Knights) somewhat less painful.

Interestingly, I bought a Can of Army Painter Army Green at the Weekend and they have changed the design of the Cans and the Spray Nozzle. There is now a tab where you insert a screwdriver and the lid opens nice and clean. This is a great innovation, It shows the Army Painter guys are willing to improve and modify their products to suit the Market.

I had some problems a few years ago, with the BROWN FUR? Spray Primer, because it took on a grainy texture. I bought another can recently (after using MONTANA GOLD Series for a while which is great but expensive) and the quality versus price is brilliant. I am pleased with the results. Also it saves my brushes for important detail work. Painting a Table Top standard Army, especially Tyranids or Orks in a week is a very reall possibility.

It's a nice integrity shout by the Army Painter, that they understand your frustration with the Formula Change and the fact he gave you a honest reason as to what they had changed in the Formula and that they are trying to work out why it has changed significantly. The fact he is offering free items as a goodwill gesture, is a refreshing change and bodes well for the company's future.

I like Army painter sprays too. Nozzle was not perfect, but the colour and the consistency were great. (Desert Yellow)

Well, that's dandy if you want to prime black or white.

Personally, I prime with army painter pure red because it matches blood red, and my Tyranids are Behemoth, so blood red base. It's far easier and quicker to prime red then paint their armour and weapons black, than prime black and paint their skin red. The result is the same, but less coats of paint to get red to the right vibrancy.

Even if there were other colour primers that were cheaper, matching blood red is the key reason I use army painter.

+1.

Now OP, so are you saying the new Dragon Red is closer to the old Pure Red? I have a whole army of folks painted up with the Old Pure Red primer and I need to match it.

Yes, I sprayed a can of Dragon Red on my razorback and then dabbed a bit of GW Blood Red and a Vallejo Gory Red (darker) and the new Dragon Red matched the Blood Red perfectly. The old cans used to match Vallejo Gory Red.

But, as I've read the thread once again, it will not be a match for the Gory Red (most likely, I haven't tried the red one out) which kinda rules it out. (Unless you prime and do a quick zenital with red gore afterwards ) But... here's a good red primer for airbrushing

I have used the army painter bleached bone with no problem. Worked great for my nids. I am currently using the rat fur one for my nurgle. so far no problems.

I have had nothing but problems with the new GW stuff. Seems like i had my matt varnish freeze up, black primer came out fuzzy and other issues befor hand.

The cheap primer from Lows has no tooth. In artist speak tooth is what you get when you buy a nice peice of artists paper for working on with pencils. It has some texture. Ever tried to use a perfectly smooth peice of paper to make a nice drawing. Much harder and the result is sub par. I have noticed a fair amount of difference between how smooth the .99 cent primer is and a good primer. The good primer is easier to dry brush IMHO.

I was gonna buy a can of Daemonic Yellow, but now I'm a bit tentative in doing so.

However I've nothing but praise for the Army Painter's primers, I've gone through 2 cans of white and 1 can of black, great stuff.

And does anybody know why the cans are so damn hard to open?

They've changed the design, they now come with a Screw driver insertion tab, I wrote about it above. It is safe, easy to use, a real innovation.

Ahh, I see.

So would you say the color primers are better now?

I've used the metal primer on my entire GK army, and as long as you shake-> spray quickly across the model, much faster than with GW spray, you get very even coating, a good bit of texture (mostly flat, a little useful grain) and ,more importantly, you dont lose detail.

A quick wash over is then the basis for all my knights. Has saved me hours of time, as im a terrible painter and slow with it

I got a Army Painter black primer at the weekend simply as a change to the GW one (Which has always been brilliant) so will report back on the results!

Really hope it works ^ ^

I've had good luck with the paint quality from Army Painter, but I did get one can with the new-style tops that self-destructed the first time I opened it: The cap took the spray nozzle off with it. I had ordered it through The War Store, who sent me a new one without a hassle.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I would say the paints are thinner and less prone to "dusting" (aka a grainy sand texture if you spray on too humid a day). But unfortunately they didnt color match the new formulas to the last ones very well (at least for Dragon Red they didnt). So if you do pick up a can make sure it matches the paint you want to use (ie. Skeleton bone is supposed to match GW Bleached Bone etc etc). Do a test on a sprue or something. Hopefully, the problem may just be with Dragon Red. But it may be an issue with all the paints.... I dont think we're sure yet.

Did a test on some Cities of Death buildings this morning with the black primer.

Did one at short-ish range and one at long range (two thin coats) and they look brilliant. Even the close range one has dried smoothly and not took any detail out.

They looked quite grainy when I JUST sprayed them and that worried me but dried they are lovely.

Will be using this from now!

I have used the Bleached Bone, and Army Green sprays so far. No complaints at all, in fact I will be giving the Daemonic Yellow a try this evening. I will post how it goes, but I know that I have seen vids of people using the Daemonic Yellow successfully.

I agree with all comments on the new lids. Really difficult to remove.

Last time I used Army Painter was on a terminator's bits (sounds naughty). A lot of detail was lost but most likely it was because I was either too close or sprayed too long (that's what she said).

Tried the Daemonic yellow last night. Must be something wrong with the can I got. As I test I sprayed the army green on another model in the same conditions and it came out fine.

The Daemonic yellow was not coming out correctly. The spray was not even and it sputtered a little. I grabbed the model and threw it in some Simple Green I had in a container. I waited a bit and sprayed the can again, this time the paint came out milky like and the coverage was awful. Test the cans before you try them on models. I will be contacting Army painter to let them know.

Never had a problem with Army Painter coming out "fuzzy", but it's not very humid up here. I've used their Dragon Red, Plate Mail, and Desert Yellow all with great results.

Also, about the lids, put your left thumb where the lid meets the can and give it a little pry. It's not very hard :p

Last week I got a package in the mail and enclosed was this:

Earlier, Jonas, one of the owners of the company responded to an email of mine and offered some paints in compensation for my issues with the Dragon Red paint. I didn't need any other paints so I responded that anything else would be good and they sent me one of every brush they make it looks like.

Just wanted to plug them here and put out the good word. Hopefully they'll resolve their Dragon Red paint issues soon, because I definately want to continue being a customer. Thanks again Army Painter.

Army Painter brushes are awesome. I'm jealous of you getting their full line, although I don't see their Master Series Kolinsky in there.

They really do offer exceptionally good customer service. I ordered some Necrotic Flesh once. They didn't have any in stock, so they offered to give TWO Colour Primers in replacement. They were so very apologetic and friendly, even offering to give a can of Quickshade as a replacement, too!

That's how you look after and keep customers, folks.

Could you imagine if Privateer Press handed out free minis when something was out of stock?
