I'm sure Rupert will appreciate the extra revenue for next weeks publication of the Sun on Sunday!

'The Sun on Sunday' is fething awful name for what I'm sure will be a fething awful newspaper. It'll be the Sunday Sport with less tits, i.e. pointless.

This reminds me of an episode from Season 2 of The Wire.

Stringer Bell (the fantastic Idris Elba) is doing economics at night school and applies what he learns to the drugs trade. His gang have control of the neighbourhood but their current stash of heroin is rubbish and sales are dropping off. Consequently he asks his economics lecturer what do you do when you have a monopoly on the market place, but a weak product. His lecturer's reply...

..."Change the name."

Tell me that this isn't exactly what Murdoch has done/is about to do.

Of course not.

Since the Sunday Sun is taken (a Newastle local rag so I hear), they put in for the domain rights for the Sun on Sunday.

If the rumour mill is to be believed this has been in place for sometime as has the plan of dropping of the NotW brand. Previously this was for purely commercial reasons, now its just dead in the water.

I hear also that all of the Advertising space will be given over to good causes for the final issue as a positive spin. I wonder if Rupert is doing the same with the sales revenue?

Newspaper sales revenue barely covers the cost of printing and distribution.

Which is why newspapers run ads.

Murdoch rakes in over £600 million a year from BSkyB. He can afford to can the NotW. If it helps rescue his bid to own all of BSkyB, it will be a very good investment.

On the whole getting into bed with Murdoch thing, which this story now appears to be focusing on, what do you think are the actual dangers of telling him to get stuffed?

I was reading today that the Murdoch strategy is basically to back the obvious winner, extract some form of political favour in return and then make their media life hell if the favour is not delivered. Or in Gordon Brown's case, make their media life hell for the fun of it.

Obama has seeminlgy resisted Murdoch's advances and gets a torrid time from Fox News.

The government should allow or disallow his claim not on the merits, but whether the political benefits would outweigh the potential liabilities.

And the government should respond to this type of strategy. Either play along with an obvious blackmailer or prohibit a business deal from going through on the grounds that it might hurt their politics.

Flashman wrote:Obama has seeminlgy resisted Murdoch's advances and gets a torrid time from Fox News.

I know, right? He should get his administration to ridicule Fox, prohibit them from conducting regular business, and ultimately use his presidential power to shut down Fox News.

Aha! But, Murdoch Snr was born into feth all, and built his bastard empire through lies, deceit, and political winkysucking.

His vile offspring though....parasites, each and every one, born with a silver spoon in their gob, and thus distinctly unlikely to repeat their sire's 'glories'......

(p.s......Mods....found another one which defies the sweary filter....replace winky with the appropriate name for a male chicken and you'll get my drift)

Oh I hope so! I dearly, dearly hope so. I am seriously sick of the political clout the tossers running the gutterpress wield. The sooner it is shattered the sooner the UK (and seeing as they own Fox, the US) can return to some semblance of democracy.

Murdoch's father was a successful journalist in WW1 who made friends with Lord Northcliffe (a press baron) and got appointed to editor of the Melbourne Herald, a big newspaper in Australia.

He became managing director a few years later having increased circulation by 50%, and went on to build a media empire that included newspapers and radio stations.

Clearly, Rupert Murdoch has got media in the blood, or at least we have to admit that he did not come out of nowhere to get to where he is.

In the same way, has James Murdoch achieved his position by raw native talent or by the accident of birth? Perhaps by the time he has finished, he will own all the newspapers and TV stations in the world.

Not wanting to sound like im a fan of Mr Murdoch, because I absolutely aren't, but.. doesn't the current system work?

I mean, the Guardian is to the left as Murdochs ridiculous rags are to the right. The only news site I really trust is the BBC, and they are a tad left of centre if you ask me..

The point is, the lefties whinge and whine about Murdoch, but their own papers are the same gak, pushing their own agenda. I absolutely hate the Guardian and its ridiculous pinko editorials, arent they just two heads of the same animal?

Its like Micheal Moore and George Bush.. I think its correct to dislike both of them.

What im basically saying is this, if there are ridiculous right wing rags, and ridiculous left wing rags, isnt that alright? Weve got all the bases covered!

Id hate to see all the right wing rags vanish, and a generation grow up venerating Ken Livingstone, reading Ian Bells gak comics and eating tofu all fething day.

You label The Guardian as a ridiculous left wing rag, then said that it balances the ridiculous right-wing rags. That is a circular argument.

It was The Guardian that broke the entire NoTW hacking scandal.

Let's not ignore the fact that the NoTW has clearly been breaking various laws for years in order to get its stories. Its political stance is irrelevant compared to that.

Why is it a circular argument with regards to this subject?

I read loads of papers and websites, generally speaking if I find a story interesting, I read the Guardian and I read the Daily Fail or the Express or something, then I read the BBC website and I make my mind up. That seems a logical thing to do in the information age, all journalists have their own agenda, you have to get as much information as you can and then make your own mind up.

You also seem to have decided I was defending the NOTW, and at no point did I mention the hacking issue, who would ever justify their despicable actions?

I merely said if the right are talking and the left are talking, whats the big issue? Its good to get numerous different viewpoints on the same story. Humans are objective creatures.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I've also adopted this approach in recent years. If I read something on the Telegraph website, I instantly jump across to the Guardian website to read their view and see which argument I agree with.

It's a circular argument because you have declared that right wing papers and left wing papers are balanced, and the balance is good. You haven't attempted any analysis for example of the number of papers of each leaning, their quality, print run/popularity, etc.
