Ah, he's referring to the 2 player set. Sorry, Aduro.

It's almost like you're supposed to get together with a group and TRADE for the things you want using the stuff you don't.

Yeah, and if they're moving away from that like Aduro said then that must not have worked out too well for them.

From what I understand, they're NOT moving away from that, they're simply re-releasing the first set as fully playable forces(with no variation aside from the monster) for a variety of reasons(people who don't like collectible, people who can't find older stuff, as a holdover until they release the next set with the movie using existing stock, etc.). The next Series, as I understand it, IS going to be released as the game has been previously.

As Dice Monkey pointed out, the death has been more about the lack of support and releases than it being collectible. The thing with CMGs and CCGs is that you have to have constant outpouring of releases with little to no dead time. Over a year of no releases is a death warrant to a game like this.

They're currently rereleasing the Second series. First series was done as starter boxes, would come with two random factions, but then you had two monsters and twelve units for each faction plus I forget how many buildings. Not sure exactly how the second series boxes are being done, but I know they're labeled for what faction is inside of them, and it contains only that one faction.

I'm not sure how long it took them to put out the second series originally or when that one year gap you're talking about occured, because the game had died in my area before they did.

The second series was not the problem it went out on schedule. The release order went first series: Rise > I Chomp New York > All Your Base >2nd series Monsterpocalypse Now> Delay then Voltron >Longer delay > Big In Japan > Nothing for more than a year except concept sketches that have been taken down. Then suddenly "We are re-purposing stuff you already have for more than you can buy it on the open market, we also won't support this either. Please go to Fan Site with no affiliation with us for support and scenarios, We do this because we hate you, but we feel you should give us your money anyway!"

Only now do I realize how much I prefer Pete Haines' "misprints" to Gav Thorpe's "brainfarts." :Abadabadoobaddon

Everything from the first three releases is now available in a non-collectible format. The only thing that's still randomly (unfortunately, imo) is the 2-player starter, which contains two random factions from Rise. The specific units that make up each faction in the starter are pre-set. The DMZs are clearly marked to indicate which faction is in each one, and two boxes for the same faction will have identical contents.

From what I've heard, Now! and Big in Japan are moving to a similar model, and what I've been hearing is that we will *ONLY* see Series 6 released as part of a DMZ-style package. In short, MonPoc has permanently kicked the collectable habit.

The lack of news for quite some time was troubling, and quite frankly inexcusable, imo. But there was no way that PP was going to abandon a game that's got a movie in the works.

As for the rules, as others have noted they're much more sophisticated than one might expect based on the "collectable" bit. I played a game with my brother last night and highlights included knocking his monster back halfway across the map through a building, and slamming into another building that was between my monster and his so that it would collapse on his monster.

Dice Monkey wrote:The thing that killed Mosterpocalypse was PP piss poor support for it. More than a year without any kind of updates or communication to the players, scrapping the original model and leaving players and retailers holding the bag, and retooling the line by giving players access to models they already payed for either from direct purchase or the secondary market.
This.
lord_blackfang wrote:It is the most brilliant ruleset ever created by man (that I've seen, IMHO, and other usual disclaimers) and was wasted utterly on the CMG crowd used to rules that fit on one double-sided leaflet ... I think this was PP's main failing, they simply targeted the wrong market with this game. Now they're trying to compensate by re-releasing it in semi-collectible and non-collectible formats but I fear it may be too little, too late.
And this. I'm not just flamebaiting when I say PP isn't the greatest thing since plastic resin. MonPoc is a truly amazing game (the Voltron set is ... words fail me, it's so awesome ...) but trying to get into has been a royal pain in the heiny. It's felt like trying to get into some secret club that no one is sure even exists.
