I am quite sad that I can't use this on my verizon iPhone. From the screenshots on the app store it looks reaaaaaally cool. I would most defintely love to see this happen for the other codices.

The app is really nice and I really liked it. It saves up time instead of browsing the codex for a specific rule. Can I suggest make a Summary page for quick access as well?

I also noted that the Disruption Field Rules do not resemble what I have in my codex and there is no mention of them in the Errata. AFAIK they grant the units fighting the same advantages obtained from Gauss Weapons of Glacing on 6's

Also the codex says that the Swarms generated by the Spyder join the Spyder's Unit.

Correct me if I'm wrong though...which means I've not been playing the army properly all this time...

I just d/l it and it does look pretty neat as a base for future development.

Thank you.

I feel so guilty about this. The app does work just fine on everything above 3.2, and it's been tested on every software version since then including the Verizon phones, but I'm afraid I put the wrong information in the package description. The App Store, believed me when I said it needed 4.2 and above, and that's why you can't use it. But I swear it does work!

My apologies to all; a fix is coming.

Apologies Lokust, it's tested and will work on your Verizon; just as soon as I <ahem> correct the package information that says it doesn't work.

I'm interested in this idea, but am not quite sure what you mean. Can you explain how that would work or look, please?

My apologies; this, and other inaccuracies were simply caused by the problem that I don't personally play Necrons, have what seems to be an 8 year old codex (though I think that is the latest), and given the huge amount of text involved, I copied some of the data from a codex that I think is a fan rewrite.
As I say, if I were to tackle codices more seriously, I would need help from others to prepare the data and check it all.

I think I speak for all of us, but we'd be happy to help prepare and check data if you plug it in. I'd help out with any codexes that I own (SM, CSM, BA, BT, SW, Eldar, Daemons). Also, if you can incorporate the newest FAQ rules in, it would help a lot too-such as BT and DA storm shields being 3+ now, instead of 4+ as the codex still says.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Thanks, man; I appreciate it.

I think I started doing it (the initial army calculator) because I'm vain and stupid. I idly bragged to a young man named Sam that I could do it, knowing he'd think it was cool idea. <casually> "Of course, I could probably knock up an army calculator on the iPhone if you wanted". Oh, boy.
It actually turned out to be the hardest data modeling problem I've ever tackled, including a system I built for a German investment bank, I kid you not!

Then as I got in to it, I wanted to make some money from it, and started talking to GW. By that time, I had the codex going, but they weren't about to let me do very much, so I just tweaked the codex to see what people would think.

You folks have been so genuinely appreciative and your input has been so thoughtful and intelligent that I'm really motivated to keep going and do something for the general good.
This would be cool in some ways, but uncool in others. Things could easily get messy for GW, and the great work of their staff that they rightly wish to defend.
I wonder if anyone knows someone on the inside at GW to whom they could show all this enthusiasm? I'm sure their staff must be lurking here - it'd be good if it was brought to the attention of the powers that be.

Thanks again for all your encouragement. I'll get the update through to Apple shortly, and it'll come through before long so you non-iPhone 4 folks can take a look. I'll also have some screenshots of the calculator real soon to provoke some discussion, so if people are keen, I'll post that to another topic?

In the last page of every Codex there is a SUMMARY page with all the stats for all the units in the army.

Sadly necrons right now have it in the middle of the book as it seemed to be the 3rd edition's trend.

What I meant was to include that page in the App so you don't have to go through the codex to find it.

Ok thanks, given a small crew of determined people committing about 10-20 hours of tedious copy typing per codex, and another 100-150 hours work from me, and it's very feasible. I'm not sure how I'd find the time for it, but it is do-able. And here's a thought - do-able before Games Day UK if there was some serious commitment!

I suggest this discussion is taken offline. PM me if you're interested, thank you.

... Of course, we might well imagine DakkaDakka moderators now having to guard the server room against GW's black-suited operatives, who have even now been despatched by GW senior management to end this whole venture. Aye, they look normal enough to the unsuspecting eye, but are the very Spawn of Slaanesh, their tentacles will soon be reaching out to throw the power relays in whole city blocks, if that's what it takes to switch off DakkaDakka, their bodies momentarily incorporeal as they navigate the warp to find me before I can ... what's that ... whoa! This stupid joke's making me jumpy - me and my imagination . I think it's just someone at my door ... no ... it's ... some THING ... it's ... OH, MY GOD, NO! No-ooooooaaaaargghhhh!

Ok, I understand now; thanks.

I think that's what I was trying to avoid though, when you think about it! The iPhone screen is very small, and the amount of information is very large ...

I'm doing so at present, yes. This app was actually a prototype for that, because of the complexity of the data. The example of the Eldar Farseer with the optional wargear and required upgrades is a good one. I don't intend that the calculator would have the rules information in, though. It just lists the items and the requirements for them eg. "you must equip 3 of the 4 following items". or "You may equip 1 flamer and 1 shuriken cannon; 2 flamers, or 2 shuriken cannons" etc.

I'll begin a new post when I have some decent looking screenshots - it's a bit grim at the moment. Are there any graphic designers out there? PM me!

I'm midway through the revised version of the codex app that provides the features people asked for, particularly the separate listings for weapons and unit special rules.

If anyone would like to help me out with this, there's an evening's work to be done with the WH Necron Codex checking my copy. There are mistakes and omissions, as noted by people here. I would provide the content I'm currently using, which is about 150 rules/options/weapons with a definition for each, and each should be checked and corrected where necessary. I believe there are about 30 needing correction.

Thanks.

Slowburner

ps. If you work on a Mac too, that's better yet, and I can send you a the .plists I'm using in the app, otherwise, we'll manage.
