McCoy.

He was like Loki, like Merlin, he had a dark side a mile wide yet could veer into Chaplin-esque comedy. He was fascinating to watch.

Here's the thing, these new Doctors have had the privilege of working with massive budgets and the backing of the BBC, when McCoy inherited the blue box, the budgets were tiny, the BBC's management totally antagonistic towards the programme and the media ridiculed it. He treated the storylines with seriousness, held together some shaky ones by dint of presence alone and managed to keep a straight face when issuing his threats and warnings to some very badly costumed villains.

So, when you consider these more recent doctors or the early to mid doctors, remember they weren't mired down in the production hell that McCoy was and then remember how bloody awesome he still was despite all that.

I think it's a real shame he's so overlooked, he really was excellent.

Christopher Eccleston. the guy who IMO looks the least like how i imagine the doctor.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I'm now just pondering what a cool Dr Who Carl McCoy would make...

Although I suspect he'd paint the tardis black and put gargoyles on it.

Aye McCoy is a bloody close second, almost overtaking for first for me.

I was just so convinced a 'young' Doctor would fall on his behind, that Smith has totally won me around via his first series and the way he potrays the Doctor.

This hasn't lessened with the second series.

Peter Howell deserves a mention for his kick ass version of the theme tune.

Colin Baker encapsulated the barminess of the whole series and that episode where he teams up with the oboron [sic] knight to take out Davros, is one of my favourites, so much so that I can't even remember what it's called (memorial of the daleks?) but that's hangovers for you!

And that episode with the master and that evil women timelord is none to shabby either.

Tennant takes it for me, although Baker comes a close second. Both of them truly engross me in what is happening and make me start looking out for blue boxes...

Smith just doesnt make me care about anything or anyone in the series, at all. And ever since the first episode, its like hes trying to do the 'wacky, crazy Tennant Doctor' and failing at it horribly. The poor scripts dont help his case either, but thats not his fault i suppose, and i will admit some of his one-liners are very funny.

For me Matt Smith is the only Doctor of the modern era that I could actually believe was an alien that just happened to look like a human being.

The external monolog and exchanges like this (paraphrased from imperfect memory:

Amy Pond: Doctor, are we going to live?
Doctor Who: Of course we are.
Amy Pond: Doctor, was that a lie?
Doctor Who: Of course it was.

I voted for Smith, as I've enjoyed his series more than I enjoyed the nightmare that RTD created.

On a side note, my chemistry teacher is called Colin Baker, and he named his son Tom, having never watched Dr. Who in his life.

Have to go with Tennant on this one. Though bear in mind this opinion comes from seeing a snippet of the First, Second and Third Doctors, and the entirety of the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh. Tennat was just brilliant about switching between both aspects of the Doctor - the humorous, campy version of the Doctor, as well as the dark, serious one. He really felt like the very essence of what the Doctor is supposed to be, a clever man with a clever box, and the sole protector of the human race as its timeline unfolds. I was very disappointed when he and Russel T. Davies left the show to let Moffat and Matt Smith take the helm. It just isn't the same anymore.
