ive played nedz for years, and the new book is ok... at 500p id go with a prime with BS/LW and deathspiter AG so think he is like 110points. 2 10man units of terms with AG & TS 140points and 5 hive guard 250points. the prime is a killer with FC his str 6 I6 making him like a HT for 1/2 the points on the charge. and a lashwhip will you let you kill other HQ. the hive guard with 10 str 8 shoots will let you kill anything you cant kill him melee and all there tanks. this list will be fun for you not your friends tho ive played this at 500 points and its over fast for anyone.

So, if I got this right... Hormagaunts are the base melee troops, Termagaunts are the base ranged troops, and genestealers are an upgraded version of Hormagaunts.
So is there anything that just really sucks?

Rippers. The only real use for them is trying to build Nidzilla, since you can satisfy troop choices with 60 points total.
Warriors aren't great because they're 30 point multi-wound models with a crappy save and an easy to ID toughness. If they had Eternal Warrior they'd be worth it.
Pyrovores are absolute crap, especially since they're vying for an Elite slot against things like Hive Guards and Zoanthropes.

Why do you say it is a practice from an old codex? Is it not possible now?
Man, I just read about the Trygon, and it seems awesome!
Also, what does "acute senses" do?

And what is the Red Terror? I see a model for it, but I can't find it in the codex.

Ah ok, cool cool. So I think I decided that I want to run a mainly CC army, so I suppose I'll be going with Hormagaunts. I don't know if this is possible with only 500 points, but I also want to do a lot of reserve/deep striking stuff too.
So, let me know if this sounds decent...
Some Hormagaunts.
Either a Hive Tyrant with some Tyrant Guard (god those models are expensive.
Maybe a Mawloc? Seems cool.
What else can deep strike... raveners? Lictors? Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry for a double post, but I've started thinking about some more specifics for 500 points. Here is what I've come up with...
24 Hormagaunts in two separate units - 144 points
3 Raveners (who will deep strike) - 90
8 Genestealers in a Mycetic Spore - 152
This leaves me with 112 points for an HQ unit, and the only thing I can afford with that is a Tyranid Prime. I could drop the Hormagaunts down to 20 total, which frees up 24 more points for a total of 136.
So, a couple of questions...
One, the list says that I can give Genestealers, who start with Rending Claws, Scything Talons as well. Do these talons replace the claws, or do they function together?
Two, since Tyranid Warriors (and the Tyranid Prime) are infantry, can they join a regular unit of Hormagaunts? Assuming the Tyranid Prime is by himself, I mean.
So, what do you think of this list? I figure, the genestealers don't suffer from instinctive behavior, so they can deep strike anywhere. The Prime would be with the Hormagaunts all the time to keep them in line, and would join one of the units if need be. The Raveners would likely be outside of synapse range, but their instinctive behavior is "feed" anyway, which is great.
Should I give the Raveners guns? Or anyone else? Should I upgrade the Hormagaunts if I have extra points, or keep them basic? Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry, lots of stuff tonight. I'm looking at the Tyranid Battleforce. How easy is it to convert Termagaunt bodies/legs into Hormagaunts? I mean, do Hormagaunt arms fit onto Terma-bodies pretty easily?

You should drop the mycetic spore on the stealers, genestealers can outflank, with that gone you can go with a HT 21 hormgaunts 3 raveners and 8 stealers.
Warriors cant join a unit hormgaunts etc but prime can
Genestealers gain the full benefits of rending claws and one pair of scything talons for the upgrade
Scything talons dont look very good on the termagant, it is very possible to do tho, you will just run out of scything talons before that occurs

Genestealers and toxin sacs! Poison and rending is a wonderful thing! And I'd never spore pod them. Think that, if you infiltrate or outflank, you get close enough to charge asap. If you pod in, then you're a sitting duck for at least a turn. And baby you'd better believe that your opponent is going to shoot them.

So, do most people use the spore pods for the big bugs? I can't imagine putting a unit of Genestealers, Hormagaunts, Termagaunts, Gargoyles, Raveners, or Warriors (because they are synapse creatures - need em on the table) in one.

It all depends on your plan of attack. A carnifex that has no shooting ability might be better off in a spore so he can get up the field without dying. Most of the time, you put in pod the expensive unit that you can't afford to lose, or the unit that you need to act as a lynch pin.
The units I usually use pods for are gants with devourers. This little guys are too expensive to walk across the table and die as cannon fodder. So, I'll put a squad of them in a spore. This guarantees they will get at least one turn of shooting. And, 60 S4 shots is going to hurt! I'd put lash/bone warriors in a pod. I'd put the zoanthropes or the doom in pods.
Hormagants can outflank with hive commander rule so if i bought ubergants I'd deliver them that way. Stealers already can outflank and infiltrate so there is no need to pay for the pod.
When buying the spore, consider what you need it for. Does the unit it really need? Or does the carnifex do well enough walking up the field.

Outflank seems way worse than just Infiltrating on the first turn, assuming you get the first turn...

It seems that the most common opinion on dakka is that they are only good at popping land raiders, but they are really unreliable because of all the rolls

Ah, I see. So you mean, the psychic test, plus the to-hit roll, plus the wound/penetrate roll? As opposed to the normal unit that only needs to-hit/wound. Makes sense. Still, maybe a unit of them in a drop pod for one round of shooting?

One round of shooting assuming they don't have any psychic defense (Hoods, RoW, SiTW, etc).
Some people swear by them, others (like me) don't like them at all.

My opinion on Zoanthropes is that they would be very good, even with having to make the Psychic test (they're Ld 10 after all!), if not for all of the things that specifically counter psykers.
A Rune Priest can nullify your power on a roll of 4+. A Libarian with a Psychic Hood forces you to do a Leadership roll-off (which your chance of winning is 21/36). A Grey Knights dreadnought forces you to take your Leadership test at Ld 6 (you have a 15/36 chance of passing). Eldrad forces you to take your Psychic test on 3d6, which you have a 108/216 chance of passing, which is about the same as your chance of Perils of the Warp.
Zoanthropes will tear it up against Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Imperial Guard, and will be useless against Space Wolves with a Rune Priest, Grey Knights, Vanilla Marines with a Librarian, or Eldar with Runes of Warding.

In the Tyranid codex entry for Genestealers, it says that you pay 14 points per model and can upgrade one to a broodlord for 46 points. Does this mean that you pay the original 14 points for a genestealer and then ANOTHER 46 points to replace that model with a broodlord? So, if you only have 8 models you would have 7 genestealers and one broodlord? Also, does the Broodlord start with both of the psychic powers listed in his entry?

Yes to everything you asked.
The broodlord ends up costing you 60 points - and imo isn't worth it unless you're fielding multiple full broods.
