KILL TEAM and COMBAT PATROL sound like 'definite maybes', though I'll admit, I'm tempted to just throw caution to the wind and grind it out in the 40K tournament!

Even if I 'only' go the KT/CP route, I'll still be bringing a 'full army' for the (I hope) readily available pickup games of 40K!

I've been looking into the westin, and cant seem to get the roughly 114USD price per night - is there a special code, doyou need to book directly with them, etc? Or is it just a UK thing?

There is a special Adepticon room rate code that is given out to get that rate.

Not so much, the hotel will have a bar there though right outside the gamming hall doors.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

As a newbie to the event, and as a very casual 40K player, what events should I sign up for?

I suppose I could just dive into the 40K tournament, get steamrolled and still have a good time, but any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

Dude if there is one thing that I would hit it would be the Combat Patrol. While my very awesome new baby girl kept from attending this year I went last year and I had more fun playing in the combat patrol than I did anything else. I actually got to speak with the gentleman who put it together (horrible with names unless I have arrested you) and he is a gamers gamer. Very nice and you could tell he put alot of work into it. I just loved that event. I will be there for 2012 (barring a catastrophe).

When in doubt.........Duck!

Even in the far future there can still be heroes...

I'm hoping to put a team together for the team tournament. I've got two okays and one maybe so far. Not really sure what theme/army we are going to go for yet, but I'm sure we'll wait until the last minuit to get everything together and painted.

How preciserly does the Team Tournament function? Is it doubles or what?

Probably work

You have a team of four. Each person brings basically half a FOC rounded down (1 HQ each), with a floating slot of Elite, Fast, or Heavy, and maybe an optional IA/Apoc unit, depending on if they allow that again. 1000 points per person. The first three games are randomly determined pairing, splitting up you and your teammates into two teams of two. You then play of against another team. The last game your team leader picks how to split the team.

You get points for display, how much sense your team's armies make together, and other things you do for 'team spirit'. It's always a blast, and all of the teams we played against the last time I did it were great. I had no idea the amount of presentation and showmanship we needed to have done for it though, and I think we'll be able to be better prepared this time around.

Oh, and there are bonuses if you are an all Imperium, all Chaos, or all Xenos army.

You want full details, try this.

Otherwise, 4 players, each with 1000 pts (each is a Team Member). Each game, your team will face off against another team; each team is broken into two Coalitions (each consisting of two Team Members & their armies), and 2 games of 40k are played. The tournament goes for 4 rounds, so your team will play in 8 games over the day.

Each Team Member's army is limited to 1 HQ, 0-1 Elite, 1-3 Troops, 0-1 Fast Attack, and 0-1 Heavy Support (so that every possible Coalition combination will still result in a legal army list). Additionally, 1 army may have an extra Elite, a different army may have 1 extra FA, yet a different army may have 1 extra Heavy, and the fourth army may have a tasty Forgeworld treat.

It's a fantastic event, and army planning is very interesting, as you are essentially building not 4 1000 pt armies, but 6 2000 pt armies (the 6 possible coalitions your team will field).

Here are the rules from the 2011 Warhammer 40K Team Tournament and the scenarios that were played at the actual event.

edit: Janthkin beat me to it. 2012 event rules will be very similar. Expect some draft rules shortly after the webcart goes live.

It would be lovely if the theme-based composition rules were a bit more relaxed. Given how GW uses Special Characters to unlock certain "builds," it can be difficult to pair, say, Deathwing with any Xenos force (something that may deserve a hit to the Theme score, but doesn't necessarily merit absolute banning via the army composition rules).

And getting Draigo onto the same team as Fateweaver is outright verbotten, even if it would make for a really cool display board.

Is there any possible kind of exception for 'counts as' models?

For example, if you had several pre-heresy/heresy legions together using 'counts as' models for different army lists (e.g. a Thousand Sons force using Grey Knights rules, an Iron Warriors force using Necron rules, a World Eaters force using Blood Angels rules, and so on) you'd miss all the compositional score boxes despite fielding a highly customised, thematic, and appropriate combined army.

I didn't enjoy the last tourney I went to, but I enjoyed getting leathered and pestering everyone.

Where is adepticon anyway?

And can you drink cans of Pabst while you play?

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Technically it is in Lombard IL but you can fly into Chicagos O'hare airport and it's a 25 minute drive via cab (about $32 cab ride so order a O'hare limo as it is cheaper and safer). The hotel it is out of is the Westin in Lombard and currently they are out of double bed rooms btw as my roomate called the other week and they were sold out. Tons of great things too do in the area if you get out early but honestly I would recomend that you just go through geek nation tours as they will set you up with everything you need.

Technically by state laws no you can't sit around drinking pabst (eww) as we here in the states are a little more prude when it comes too drinking laws, BUT there is several small liquer bars right outside the hall and the Harey Carey bar and grill is in the hotel (if you are a native chicagoan and don't know who he is for shame on you!). The pub has all around good food, but I always make a point to order giordonos at least once whenever I am back home in Chicago...best deep dish in the city, and none of that Ginos bull people they suck!

Alpharius, going back to Mannahnin's comment about a light schedule, the first year I went to Adepticon (2009), I only played in the Combat Patrol tournament, and still had a GREAT time. There's so much to do and see, it's just a gamer's dream!

If you're feeling really rambunctious, you can always volunteer to help as well. Last year I wasn't playing in the 40k tournament, so I just helped out a bit.

Also, Janthkin nailed it on the head about arriving early and leaving late if you can swing it. I always go a few days early to do some stuff in Chicago (mostly see the Field Museum), but it's much more relaxed that way.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

!

The hotel does still have double bed rooms available for the AdeptiCon dates and it shows availablity on through the website. So we are not sold out just yet : ) If you have issues wtih a hotel booking always best to check. We expect as with last year that double queen rooms will be in short supply.

As for drinking ...

You can drink in the event halls with the condition that the refreshments are purchased from the hotel and we have a cash bar setup outside the main hall. Additional there is a bar located in the Harry Caray space that we are working to get some extended hours. I'm not sure Pabst is on the list of beer offerings however. As Empchild, has also pointed out plenty of places around the Westin as well.

I ran into issues with Sunday night & double queen rooms; the rest of the weekend still has availability (or did as of yesterday morning, anyway).

If you're staying through Sunday night, I'd call Westin's reservation line, and have them manually book you a double queen room through Saturday night, and then a King w/a rollaway for Sunday night.

I'm letting my room mate take care of it all honestly as he called about the double queens. He's teaching all four days of the event so he and I will be there from thursday-monday. Total shameless plug for him: Sign up for classes with Mathieu Fontaine as I garuntee you won't be disapointed! His are generally some of the first too sell out so as soon as registration opens kick it into gear people!

I just reserved a two-queen room for the 17th through the 23rd, no problem. I hadn't thought about it yet, but your post made me worry a bit Janthkin!

It also has two queen sized beds; ba-ZING!

Ketara,

We have allowed count as in the past but it is generally a good idea to email the event organizer if you have an concerns. Each event has an email for questions that is directed to the staff. As Janthkin, points out the rule of cool is generally in effect.

Cyporiean,

Dropped Greg a note

Count-as is covered in the Model Policy. This is last year's, but expect it to be more or less the same for 2012.
