junk wrote:Dude, Tau are definitely the top tier army at the moment. By being so poor at close combat, they actually have a pretty significant edge, which is their inability to be locked in multi-turn assaults. Trying to keep a tau unit in assault is like trying to eat soup with a fork. Also, you never have to worry about assaulting enemy units because it's never a good idea, really letting you focus on trying to make the most of the only unit in the codex that can contribute to a victory.

Also, what's incredible about the tau is how many different versatile units they have. Vespids really come in handy as a speed bump. Kroot are really good at being speed bumps. Drone squads are really amazing at being speed bumps. Fire Warriors are fantastic at drawing fire by merit of their being so easy to kill, and in a pinch, they make a great speed bump.

Really though, it's the HQ choices that make the codex so competitive, the etheral is just a powerhouse, so remarkably effective that he actually improves your army by dying, maybe.

I actually started to agree with this post, for the most part....
....until it brought up ethereals.

Kroot are pretty good at what they do for what they cost. And the Tau do rely on their HQs/Elites. I agree that aren't bad...they're just hard to use.

The Ethereal makes a good speed bump, and won't get locked in combat.

You do have to be careful to avoid the temptation to charge with him, though, as he is the best melee fighter in the army.

The funny thing about Tau, ifyou go by my tier list, is that they do pretty well against all 4 armies in my top tier list...assuming mech builds.

The typical lists that trump tau aren't usually based on shooty msu mech lists. They are usually based on things like drop pods, jump marines, deep strikers (like demons), and bike armies.

Those lists lose to the top. However, with the current meta, Tau can do pretty darn well if you tool them to beat mech lists.

Top tier armies require top tier lists, and top tier lists come from top tier codexes interpretted by top tier players

1. Space Wolves - good all-rounders
2. IG - sit down and roll dice until your opponent takes all of their models off the table
3. DE - with a bit of patience and wit can beat most armies (with the right list)
4. Blood Angels - can field a fast SM army that can be troop heavy
5. Grey Knights - pffffft.

Though this is my opinion, it is also list dependent and the ability to play that list to it's full potential. Some SW players at tournaments might do badly and come say bottom 5 out of 5 players, whereas you might have 3 SW armies in top 5 at tournament because the player has used the codex to it's full potential to suit the way that player plays a game.

Company command; bareboned 50

Platoon command with chenkov 80

X5 fully loaded conscripts(250 models in 50 man groups) with "Send in the next wave" 1375

total 1505pts of annoying wave after wave....I win from players not being able to kill enuff of them. In CC these can be still nasty. plus with chenvok I can bring back 100 fully healed groups...If you have the models try this list for pure fun.

Only one conscript squad per platoon, to avoid exploits like this.

Has anyone really played the new SOB or are we just going by the old codex for its power ranking?

I have the Codex, but from first glance it looks really weak. The only good thing is the Excorcist. D6 Str 8 AP 3 missiles, for the price of a Vindicator, yet has the same armour, better weapon, and better range.

Recently I've been drudging through some of Dash's old Ork posts and bringing them back into the fold. I'm brand spanking new to the Ord Dex with maybe 25 games under my belt, and 23 solid wins with 2 draws. That's about the same record I had with Guard after I got my prioritized list, and it's doing better than my SW List.

So with that aspect I would give top 5 to ....

1:IG
2:Orks
3:GK
4:SW
5:BA
