T'was ever thus. The names of Eldar Craftworlds and character names and all examples of Eldar speech have been Gaelic-inspired, sometimes directly taken, text.

Too true. Sam Hann and Beil Tan are translations of Wiccan holidays-Bel Tain and Saim Hann. I learned this from my ex, who is a Wiccan, and she was talking about her holidays and I responded "hey, I know that word-it's a craftworld in one of my games!" She thought I was nuts...I know I got the spelling wrong in the names, but you guys know what I mean.

On topic...ugh, now I have to find a favorite quote for later. It'll involve Slaanesh and the despoiling of virgins, somehow. Lol. Least favorite has to be "blood for the blood god." It's old. It's also disturbing to see somebody scream "sprues for the sprue god" at Gamesday-I don't know who he was, but a god, he was not.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Irish is the oldest surviving language in the world. So there. They probably wanted a language few people would recognise. Or one of the authors has an Irish cousin.

Sorry, technically Old Irish is older than them, but Slightly Younger Irish is slightly younger than them. My source would have to be... the official history of Ireland used for state examinations that decide the futures of those who do them.

That's from the Necron video teaser GW put up a couple days ago, it's also in my sig, and as of right now, is my go-to quintessential Necron quote.

Anyway my favourite quote is the Dark Eldar quote in my sig. I like how it takes the cliche villain boast "I'm your worst nightmare! BLAARGH!!" and makes it even more sinister.

I haven't trusted Google for a while now. They've taken the history of Irish off the syllabus, so it's not even on the website that I can see. I'll try find some dates though.

Well, according to J.P.Mallory, Irish in its earliest form began with the Celts around 1200BC, which is pretty good. Though the fact that it took almost nine hundred years to invent writing is a bit worrying...

That's a very strange statement. What exactly don't you trust about google? The fact that they are a company? Or are you implying that google is wrong?

Celtic and Irish are two different languages as far as I know. Celtic is a Gaulish language originating in Europe. While Irish is a Gaelic Language brought to Ireland by the Gaelic Scots. (This is all from memory from LC about 4 years ago, so it could be wrong) Unless you mean Irish culture, which was brought in by the Celts.

Any quotes? If we are going by earliest form, I'm going with Sumerian @2900BC. or Greek @ 1425 - 1375 BC. But I'm almost sure the oldest surviving language is Hebrew

I thought the original quote, from the Rogue Trader book was pretty intriguing:

"Though my guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire. - The Tyrant of Badab

Remember that this line of text wasn't expanded upon in the background for some time (maybe White Dwarf 110 or thereabouts?) so it was really enigmatic and mysterious sounding, as so much of the first rulebook was. Who was this Tyrant of Badab, and what were his big guns?

I had a chaos fleet in BFG and the flagship (a battleship) had the name 'Tyrant of Badab', always thought it had a nice ring to it

My understanding is that Celtic is the parent root (under the Indo-Europen branch) of a group of languges which include Irish, Scots gaelic, Welsh etc.
You're right about Irish being a Gaelic language.
So its basically Celtic -> Gaelic -> Irish

Dont think Irish is the oldest language in the world tbh. Even in its early forms (and by this I mean raw root form) you're looking at maybe a max of 1000BC.
