I think you, especially, would enjoy this one.... John Waters and Divine were a perfect team.

REC, or going by the remake, Quarantine. Now I saw REC, in the dark, with 3 mates. And I had an abnormal fear of the undead, still do to a degree. THh premise of the undead actually existing is terrifying...
So watching a spanish/mexican film about the undead in an apartment in the dark wasn't a wise idea. Just after the lights go out in the film and the blatent jumpscare... yeah, tears.

Its well worth your hour and a half. Even just to see how fethed up it is.
No movie has really messed me up per se not on an individual level at least anyway. But possibly watching all the X files seasons when i was about 13 or 14 wasnt such a crash hot idea.

The microwave scene in Urban Legend freaked me out for a long, long time. I love dogs, so I almost instantly hate anything that involves the death of them.

Gummo...Holy hell I'd forgotten all about that film...I almost died laughing when I first saw it, just the " Rabbit scene" alone was worth the price of the DVD.

Watched it without knowing what it was about. Really wished I had just left it at the DVD store. Absolutely sickened me to the core.

Tim Anderson of horror review site Bloody Disgusting likened the film to "having [his] soul raped" and dissuaded anyone reading his review from ever seeing it, writing: "If what I have written here is enough to turn your feelings of wonder into a burning desire to watch this monstrosity, then perhaps I haven't been clear enough. You don't want to see Serbian Film. You just think you do."

I know enough about The Serbian Film to avoid it. Like a less pleasant, far less humane, and longer 2 girls 1 cup.
Generally most of the films on this list are fairly tame. Nothing from experimental cinema has been mentioned. I would name some off, but they aren't mainstream. You wouldn't know them.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
Funny Games.
Its just pointless, but then I think thats what the director wants you to think, i'm fairly sure his philosphy is 'Why are you watching this?'
Ahtman, how do you know we won't know non-mainstream stuff?

The Happiness Of The Katakuris and Audition are too mainstream? Pfft, I loathe movie snobs... "Ohhh, you havnt seen the latest (insert name of crappy Kahzakstani director here"? Why you simply must! The way he trancendends the life of a lonely oak is simply staggering dahling"....
Yeah, because the mainstream are always wrong, and films like District 13 and Bunny And The Bull are worthless because they didn't cost £1.20? Ahtman, there is a reason most people don't watch experimental cinema....it's 99% gak.

Audition was an interesting one.

Jaws 2... purely because I was 5 at the time: I hate deep water, hate, hate, hate it even to this day!!! It was an appropriate family watch according to my parents... as was Aliens. (Both on T.V/DVD release of course, thought i can't remember which exactly.)
Since being 'grown up'... I'm not that much into horror films as they either bore the heck out of me or I start trying to rate the effects. Those I have seen are mostly mainstream-ish though so a lot of the others mentioned here would possibly get me rocking in a corner but as they have no entertainment value for me (pointless/shocker gore just makes me roll my eyes) I simply don't tend to watch them.
I'd probly end up in some sort of asylum if I did.

Because I have a better memory of what happens on the OT board I suppose, and a better sense of humor.
sarpedons-right-hand wrote:The Happiness Of The Katakuris and Audition are too mainstream?
Comparatively, yeah. If your idea of mainstream is only movies like Transformers 3 than your perspective on the the medium is exceedingly narrow.
sarpedons-right-hand wrote: Pfft, I loathe movie snobs...
I take this as you being threatened by people who know more on a given subject. You might might as well tell a doctor they are biology slobs. You'd be surprised how a little knowledge makes you not care how much someone is upset just becuase they don't know something.
sarpedons-right-hand wrote: "Ohhh, you havnt seen the latest (insert name of crappy Kahzakstani director here"? Why you simply must! The way he trancendends the life of a lonely oak is simply staggering dahling"....
I'm not sure why you are singling out Eastern Europe when people are doing fringe work all over the world. Kind of an ignorant and not very well thought out statement.
sarpedons-right-hand wrote:Yeah, because the mainstream are always wrong
Now you are just completely making stuff. I never said anything of the sort, just that, outside of The Serbian Film, almost everything on this list is not that eye-brow raising.
sarpedons-right-hand wrote:and films like District 13 and Bunny And The Bull are worthless because they didn't cost £1.20?
Again, just totally making stuff up.
sarpedons-right-hand wrote:Ahtman, there is a reason most people don't watch experimental cinema....it's 99% gak.
Add another 1% to that and that is how much of that sentence is "gak". Just becuase it isn't going to get a wide audience, and really it isn't meant to considering the nature of it, doesn't mean it is pointless nor bad. The real reason most people don't is becuase these films are not escapist (not narratives and more intellectual exercises), as requiring a real effort to actively seek them out. There aren't trailers for them and you won't see clips on "Bravo's 100 Scariest Scenes". It is the difference between reading Entertainment Weekly and Cahiers du Cinema.
I also never said people weren't allowed their opinions or said the movies listed were bad, just that in the broader scope cinema, they are fairly safe films.

I'm trying to think of a film that really mae me think about something in a whole new way, in a way that I had never considered before....
I honestly can't think of one right now.
However, the Phantom Menace did completely remove my die-hard love of Star wars. After that movie I simply never went back.

Ahtman, So are you eagerly awaiting "Melt With You"?
Seriously though, I enjoy how you can find films like the early works of John Waters as being 'mainstream'. Until the original "Hairspray", Waters was considered to be fringe and experimental.
Go find "Mondo Trasho", "Hag in a Black Leather Jacket" and "Multiple Maniacs", all shot in 8 or 16 mm, and get back to me about how 'mainstream' they are, ok?
BTW Disney's first full length cartoon movie, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was considered 'experimental'.
You really want to ride that elitist horse around here?
