I've heard (but don't have a source so you know what to do) that 1 in 5 people exhibits sociopathic behavior patterns.
That's a lot of people who simply can not comprehend that other people are in fact people, and not simply props.
Sometimes, I wish I was a sociopath. It would make life sooooo much easier.

You might think so at first, but there a lot of things in life, from exercising sexual urges to advancing in the work place, that depend on empathy to at least some degree. Now, you could probably feign empathy with practice, but I imagine it would take far more effort than simply being empathetic.

Yup. Or at minimum, we ain't going to admit them to YOU. It's what happens when you have your childhood filled with things like "Self-sufficiency above all" "Don't depend on others." "Help is for wussies." "Depending on substances to get through your day without some serious scars or missing limbs is a sign of a <CENSORED> <CENSORED> <CENSORED>" etc..
Then you factor in a mental health system that diagnoses so frequently and without apparent recourse that the thinking around the firing line is that if you take 10 people off the street who will actually speak true to a head-shrinker and send them in, you will have 10 newly diagnosed mental-defectives walking out, and the resulting stigma being SEEN as a "Mental defective" complete with paperwork and a prescription....Well....

A friend of mine was suffering from insomnia a while back and was hoping to get some sleeping pills. The doctor attempted to put her on a six month course of anti-depressants. Since she was not depressed, this seemed like an odd decision.

This is what I've heard a lot of and seems to be true, but in my personal experience it hasn't quite been like that. I'm only medicated for what has prevented me from functioning while the more minor disorders that are irritating but not prohibitive have been and continue to be treated via therapy for the past year or so.

This may also have more to do with the fact that we are living in a world where a specific image in expected. In the case of OP, women are expected to be soccermoms, lead successful business lives, be outstanding home-makers on top of that and keep fit at the same time while looking like they are 16........ Add to that the inane useless gossip about celebrities that makes me want to kill people while screaming adoration to the blood god, and you have a lovely mix to help induce all sorts of problems in females aged 8 and up. (seriously, my bosses daughter chits and chats on the cellphone about the latest gossip on who's dating who, and the kid is like... 9......)

I'm not referencing any particular aspect of the subject; simply wondering if there is some element of men, rather than being less willing to admit that they have a problem are more likely to deal with it on their own or live with the problem.
Its a machismo aspect, if their dad didn't get help then they won't due to societal roles that were shown to them. Society plays a big part in what a male will say is manly and right for them to do and what is girly and wrong for them to do. Unfortunately this machismo means that men tend to bottle their emotions and it is typical of a lot of men from different cultures. New Englanders will typically show little to no emotion, trust me, we just don't show what we're feeling. Latino and African cultures are incredibly full of this machismo, in fact its why homosexuality is incredibly frowned upon in those two cultures even in the US. It has been known that some Latino fathers will actually kill or maim their sons should they turn out to be homosexuals.
On a side note, one of the reasons American healthcare is so expensive is because the same drug company supplies to Canada where they are limited in their profits. In an attempt to regain any profit they could lose in Canada they price the living hell out of the US market. So if you want cheap drugs, Canada has to be eliminated.
Oh dammmm you just didn't say that did you? So because of our left-wing pinko commie social health care it's our fault that the american drug companies are gouging the hell out of you guys for medication???

I like the NHS. They give me fluxoitine. It helps. Sex with wife also helps.
Wheeee!
On a serious note men's health issues gets less funding than women's issues. Women tend to be more 'biologically aware' than men (generally... us nerds might be edu-ma-cated!) Movember which is going on at the moment has some good points about men's health.

I'm proudly sporting a Cary Grant at the moment for Movember. He did it better than me, but mine's for charity. It's definitely the case that men are less willing to think about medical issues. It's part of the reason I'm doing the Movember thing, to encourage myself to not just push these things to the back of my mind.

Too true, I would like to see a statistic, but I bet that in a few years a far larger percentage of women will have a degree or above in comparison with men, if not right now.
My missus has 2 degrees from UCSB and a masters from York University.
I've got my high school diploma (GCSE's) and 2 confirmed kills with a hum-vee.
Thing is, women have to try harder because their job's are tougher to get, and it's not just down to sexism. The fact is, not many chicks want to be bricklayers, plumbers, welders, carpenters, mechanics, taxi drivers, many forms of difficult manual labour jobs such as gardeners or lumberjacks or something.
You get the idea, sadly many jobs aren't suited for girls, so you guys need to get better educated! It works out perfectly well though eh? My missus is super well educated and can balance the books and I can carry heavy things and beat people up.
Its like Ying and Yang!
I think we have evolved that way, you know, like 150,000 years ago the men would go out and run with the wolves and spear some bears while the women stayed in the cave feeding the kids and filling out the tax returns.
