Well, the good news is that if Bachmann becomes President, she is going to close down our Embassy in Iran to prevent this from happening to us.

I wish so much we could all stop pretending she's a real candidate. It's like a homeless guy wandered onto a podium, drunk as hell, and started dropping deep drunken knowledge, and somehow all present took him seriously. It cheapens all of us for it.

Anyway, back to the OP - what would the appropriate response have been, really? If they responded militarily, it would have been a bloodbath all around. I think withdrawing consular services is really the only thing politically and realistically feasible.

Good old Switzerland. You'd be surprised at actually how racist they all are. Why in my area, Basel, there were posters up for the National Party during elections.

Specimens included white sheep kicking out a black sheep from Switzerland, a women in a black burka with missiles that looked suspiciously like minarets behind her and many more.

They are all cartoons by the way but if that's not racist I don't know what is. And Hitler decided not to attack Switzerland because they had the Alps to protect them and the benefit was not worth the risk.

Most sane people don't. It's mostly hardliner republicans whom consider her a serious candidate.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I lean more Democrat, but I wished that Bachmann, Cain, and Perry would just drop out and let the Conservatives focus on the candidates that actually have a chance at beating Obama.

Just because I probably will not vote Republican doesn't mean that I don't want the best Republican to run.

When the Iranians stormed and took over the U.S. embassy in 1979, there wasn't a whole lot the staff or marines there could do about it. The result was a months long hostage situation that onlt ended when Ronald Reagan took over from Carter.
Multiple embassies in Iran were stormed and taken over by "students".
There were songs being played on the radio back then such as " Bomb Iran", sung to the tune of the Beach Boys "Barbra Ann". I remember one of the lines going: "old uncle sam's really gettin' hot. He"s gonna turn Iran into a parking lot. Bomb Iran, bomb bomb, bomb Iran."
In the context of the times, people were super pissed since an embassy is technically part of the country it represents and as such, looked upon the emassy takeover as an invasion. It didn't help, knowing the hostages were being beaten and starved and Carter did nothing.

And man, the Iranians couldn't give the hostanges back qucik enough once Regan won the election! He may have nearly bankrupted the country, but the rest of the world knew not to mess with the US when he was in office.

Personally, I think if the Iranian government isn't going to protect foreign embassies properly, then no one needs to deal with them, period. No foreign aid, no food, no nothing.

It's not like they'll starve, China can help support them for their oil.

.

I think that's more or less the case anyway, and even trade which is allowed is put off by the most stringent bureaucracy. A guy I know runs a company that sells hydraulic motors for use in engineering equipment. A company in Iran wanted a to buy them, but he was given so much grief from the UK government (including a telephone call from the intelligence services!) that in the end he didn't bother.

The silly thing is that all of the sanctions do is help the government keep a stranglehold on the people, the "look how the Western Imperialists hate us, only we can protect you" tagline given that much weight because of it. They blame the West for their hardship, as in their own minds the government is doing what it can to protect the state.

Eh, Carter really engineered their release. They may have been released when Reagan was sworn in, but the negotiating process was all the prior administration.

To be fair, there was that whole 6 day siege of the Iranian embassy in London back in the 90's.

Yeah, broad sanctions often end up being a double edged sword. They constrict the ability of the state in question to develop power, but also tend to cause the regime to dig in even deeper. Ultimately a choice between regime change, and simply limiting the ability of the regime in question to do anything on the international scene.

I don't recall hearing or reading about the Iranian embassy in London being taken over, it's staff beaten, starved and tortured for months by "students", or garbage being taken out, wrapped in an Iranian embassy flag.
When the Lybian embassy in London had shots fired from it that resulted in the death of a police woman, the staff lived to tell the tale. In a country like Iran, the staff would have been murdered.

I'm not sure why students is in quotations, the majority of people involved in the takeover of the American embassy were students. They didn't stop being students because they decided to engage in political violence.

At any rate, 2 people were killed when the Iranian embassy was taken over, essentially at random, while the American embassy was attacked after Western puppet government had been toppled. Context is important.

Maybe, maybe not. There's no way of knowing since it hasn't happened.

The thing that frustrates me about the whole situation is I don't see what they thought to gain out of this. Ok, British banks were pulling out and they were mad, but attacking the people who are your only real communication to the people who can fix your problem won't help. That would be like if a kid got grounded by his dad so he went and slapped his mom to get back at him.
