And...Iran is reduced to being the North Korea of the Mid-East.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Right. The REAL risk with china is that we get stuck picking sides between 2 people we trade with.

Now, there's nothing wrong with a nice, big parking lot. Besides, if anyone does anything it'll be the Israelis who have already threatened to strike their nuke facilities IIRC so it'll be a humus factory.

Secret Force Behind the Rise of the Tau

USA

Iran's military hardware is mostly circa 1980 equipment and composed off all the stuff the US and former USSR no longer wanted and sold them cheap.

Iran vs Western powers gets pile driven into ground. Their equipment is too outdated.

Their air force is mostly F-4's and F-14's. Their navy old Russian boats from the 60's and 70's. I think they have some subs that are newer.

Abrams tanks have already proven to be vastly superior to the Russian tanks of their own generation and Iran is still armed with large numbers of T-54 and T-62 tanks. It's like depleted uranium shells through tissue paper. They also have their own tank design but only a few hundred of them vs the US stock of around 3,000 Abrams tanks.

What Iran has put a lot of money into is ballistic missiles, but the capabilities are likely sub-par and not enough to really help them.

Troops tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan

Not really. The coalition force in Iraq isn't an issue now. Actually having troops in Afghanistan is actually a boon for the US as we don't have to negotiate to get back into the country later. A surge of troops into Afghanistan to support an attack on Iran would probably help Afghanistan's stability in the short term, but a war with Iran certainly won't (The same is true of troops in Iraq).

China getting stronger by the year.

"We condemn your actions and the attack on the "peaceful" [That's the Chinese spokesmen cringing at how stupid what he just said sounds] state of Iran."

That's what China will say and it'll be all they do.

Iran potentially disrupting oil exports from Saudi Arabia/Iraq at a time of global recession

The US Navy, which now still has enough tonnage to conquer every sea in the world, being defeated by a few gunboats and some old subramines? I doubt it. Iran doesn't have anyone on its side in this situation so no one will be helping them. The US can easily secure the straight. The only threat would be Iranian ballistic missiles, but we've seen the US navy go at Iran before and I've seen nothing to make me think we won't win that muscle match a second time.

I'm talking about Operation Praying Mantis which isn't even the first time the US Navy went in and kicked Iran around a little.

The Iranian navy plans to move naval vessels out of the Persian Gulf and into the Atlantic Ocean, "near maritime borders of the United States," the Tehran Times reported Tuesday.

According to the English-language paper based in Tehran, the announcement came from a top Iranian naval officer on Tuesday.

“As the global arrogance (forces of imperialism) have a (military) presence near our sea borders, we also plan to have a strong presence near the U.S. sea borders with the help of the soldiers who are loyal to the vali-e faqih (supreme jurisprudent),” said Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, as quoted and paraphrased by the Tehran Times.

"We've been pushing freedom of the seas for years and the Iranian navy can go wherever it wants," said Pentagon Spokesman Capt. John Kirby.

Iranians might face a challenge in refueling its fleet. Some in the Pentagon have speculated it could gas up in Venezuela, whose President, Hugo Chavez, is known to have a close relationship with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Iranians gave no indication of when or what kind of vessels they might deploy, but the announced plan comes just months after Iran sent warships through the Suez following the fall of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. It was the first time Iran had moved ships into the Mediterranean and the move put Israel on high alert.

The naval unit plans to establish direct contact with the U.S. when it hits the Gulf of Mexico, a commander in the Iranian navy said. Officials in the Pentagon strongly denied any planned port visits by the Iranians.

One senior official echoed Capt. Kirby in saying that Iran has the pleasure of moving wherever it desires in international waters. But with known intent to approach U.S. maritime borders, he added, "they might have some company."

If that's true then the Iranians are really mental. Do they not have wikipedia? The United States could and would blow them out of the water before they got any where near the coast.

Basically a lot of mopeds and motorboats.
In a military confrontation they will be wasted after their initial missile shooting, that is unless the US airforce doesnt do a preemptive strike and destroy their missiles.

Here is all you need to know about irans military and how it would hold up, pretty damn serious source:

I have to be careful what I say here, but maybe some people are missing the point. It makes no difference about the perceived superiority of the USA or the inferiority of Iran, but why the rush to fight? Sometimes I think people can be a bit gung-ho on this site sometimes, but that is their perogative.

I barely mention my past, but it's no fun when the bullets are whizzing past you, and you're standing beside what used to be a living breathing person...

At the risk of sounding like John Lennon, let's give peace a chance. I realise that dakka has no influence and that most people are are either a) spotty geeks or b) frazz

I could convert myself to a pacifist, but that won't change the reality of the situation. The idea that there is anyone who doesn't like peace is a little silly. Of course people want peace. Problem is that Iran and the US have been going at each other on and off for about 30 years, and Israel got started lot long after that. The mutual antagonism is a sort of force that almost drives itself once it gets started in terms of international politics. There comes a point where stopping it ceases to be possible (I don't think we're there yet mind you).

The situation with Iran right now could still boil over and nothing might happen.

Let's prove the Mayans wrong about 2012

Or we can prove them right and issues like Country A goes to war with Country B cease to be an issue

North korea anyone?

North Korea is a poor example. The evolution of where they are at is due more to the fact that they managed the build-ups prior to the more current level of technology. They've been able to do incredible damage to the capital of South Korea with literally seconds notice for decades and there isn't a current techonology that can prevent it. Iran doesn't have this ability so it's a different situation.

And as crazy as N. Korea's leadership is it's not a religious kind of crazy. Which also makes a difference.

Maybe in general they are fond of the concept of peace, but the reality is that its more a case of "A type of peace that I like." than simply peace. Death is very peaceful, after all. That's a heavy-handed way of making the point, but it captures the essence of why conflicts often "end" in violence. Just look at the Israel-Palestine issue. Both sides ostensibly want peace, but only if its a sort of peace that they dictate, or at least have a significant say over.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Rather than start another 'war with Iran' thread, thought I would post a link to this news here.

'Bomb Kills Iran Nuclear Director'
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/bomb-kills-iranian-nuclear-director-6287962.html

An Iranian university professor working at a key nuclear facility was killed today by a car bomb, a semi-official news agency reported.

The explosion killed Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, the Fars agency said.

Two assailants on a motorcycle attached magnetic bombs to Mr Roshan's car, killing him and wounding two others in the Iranian capital.

The attack in Tehran strongly resembles earlier killings of scientists working on the country's controversial nuclear programme.

The killing of Mr Roshan was similar to previous assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists that Tehran has blamed on Israel and the United States. Both countries have denied the accusations.

Mr Roshan, 32, was inside the Iranian-assembled Peugeot 405 car with two others when the bomb exploded near Gol Nabi Street in north Tehran, Fars said.

Fars described the explosion as a "terrorist attack" targeting Mr Roshan, a graduate of the prestigious Sharif University of Technology in Tehran.

A similar bomb explosion on January 12, 2010 killed Tehran University professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi, a senior physics professor. He was killed when a bomb-rigged motorcycle exploded near his car as he was about to leave for work.

In November 2010, a pair of back-to-back bomb attacks in different parts of the capital killed one nuclear scientist and wounded another.

The scientist killed in those attacks, Majid Shahriari, was a member of the nuclear engineering faculty at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran and co-operated with the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran. The wounded scientist, Fereidoun Abbasi, was almost immediately appointed head of Iran's atomic agency.

In July last year, motorcycle-riding gunmen killed Darioush Rezaeinejad, an electronics student. Other reports identified him as a scientist involved in suspected Iranian attempts to make nuclear weapons.

Mr Rezaeinejad allegedly participated in developing high-voltage switches, a key component in setting off the explosions needed to trigger a nuclear warhead.

The United States and other countries say Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons technology. Iran denies the allegations, saying that its programme is intended for peaceful purposes.

So I'm guessing either Mossad, the CIA or Street Hawk?
