This. This exactly. I dont want aliens of any sort in what should be a movie about awesome boats knocking 7 shades out of each other. If i wanted to watch something big randomly destroying warships i'd just watch Godzilla V Biollante and skip to the part where the Japanese Navy tries to stop him landing on the shore of Osaka.

Still i'll probably end up going to see this so meh.

Yeah, like has already been said, the Battle of Jutland would make for a fine film. Then again, so would the Sinking of the Bismarck, and that was WWII.

But this film isn't a war story, it's a big dumb movie in the style of that other Hasbro toy license, Transformers. So you get impossibly pretty people battling space aliens, with a couple of insane heroes pulling off a crazy plan in the last couple of minutes of the movie. It even looks to be pretty close to Bay's style, just hopefully without all his weird baggage.

There's already a film about the sinking of the Bismarck, unsurprisingly called 'Sink the Bismarck!' It's very good. It is from 1960 though, so your mileage may vary.

What I don't get is that it's supposedly an international fleet... And yet so far I've only seen loads of Americans and one Japanese bloke.

I have my doubts about the Battle of Jutland as a movie. Did ships back then even carry anti-aircraft armament? What are they going to be shooting at fast-moving alient VTOL's with? Although a transforming battleship with an urban\hip hop styling and street smarts does sound compelling.

Of course you won't, why would you want to walk around a movie theatre afterwards with a loaded weapon pointing around?

You watch the movie for the credits that tell you her name which you then give to the internet in return for boob images.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Only at the very end of WWI did ships carry any kind of AA armament, and even then it was heavy caliber 76mm stuff and only mounted on convoy escorts. No ship in Jutland had any kind of dedicated AA, though they could (and did) fire their 20mm & 76mm smaller guns at aircraft.

Jutland would be a fairly boring war movie as it's the ultimate historical anti-climax. You have these 2 massive fleets of imposing battleships charging towards each other in the ultimate showdown, firing a few shots, something like 10 ships are lost, and then the Germans bug out. It isn't cinematic material unless they change it so the entire German navy is wiped out.

Really this is a rather bizarre movie considering there hasn't been an actual Battleship in US Navy service (or indeed any navies service) for about 30 years. Modern naval combat is all out of visual range and launching missiles at each other by pushing buttons. The only big-gun ship left in service is this Heavy Cruiser in the Peruvian Navy and that thing is really only ceremonial by this point.

I don't think it's out yet, looks like it will be around the same time as the film, unsurprisingly.

We should go further back and have more Napoleonic naval warfare films.

If it hasn't got a Frigate hiding in the most obscure part of the sea ever, then it 'aint Battleship.

While actually trying to find that I came across another one that's made by the first company to make a Battleships like game (apparently Hasbro wasn't it). It has a hex shaped map and involved islands and the pegs were men. It was electronic as well. I didn't really have a close look though.

I thought it looked pretty complicated. And not much like Battleships. Then again... Naval warfare doesn't really involve guessing where the enemy is and firing in that general direction anymore.

Yeah, I've seen it. Disappointed by the tacked on romance and other needless personal stories, but otherwise a pretty solid movie. More than anything though, I think the immense destructive power of battleships could really be delivered with today's technology, imagine the spectacle of the Hood opening up with a full salvo. Imagine when rounds smash into it.
