It's roughly a 50/50 split between that and documentaries of mixed quality, some excellent (World at War) some poor (Battleplan).

I watched a real turkey about 'The real King Arthur' last night. I'm not sure what channel it was on though.

I'm not getting why Pawn Stars is on the History channel.

The whole thing is a set up to tell you about the *wait for it* history of the objects. Every time he says "I'm no expert, but I have a friend who is..." we are about to go on a journey of discovery together into the past. Of course the other 90% is an advertisement for his pawn shop.

I grew up watching PBS for stuff like Nova and American Experience because we didn't have cable. I really wanted discovery and history so I could watch those things any time on their own channels.

I finally move out and get cable and they have both sold out and cater to mouthbreathers. :(

History International is pretty decent.

The Military Channel is fun, but you have to except that you are getting fed propoganda for the most part.

My favorite "Channel name that bears to relevance to waht is on anymore" is TLC. Also called, The Learning Channel. I hope no one is really Learning from what is on that channel.

No, that's what PBS is for.

At least ABC stands for American Broadcasting Company. I'm not sur eif they are American anymore (I think they are owned by Disney now, and I honestly don;t know who owns them) but they are in fact a broadcasting company. The only thing TLC gets right is that it is a Channel. Therefore, ABC is more credible than ABC... or something.

Disney is the one doing the owning, no company owns Disney(IIRC)

The reason Disney keeps buying stuff is because they can't make good movies anymore, so they have to buy other people and pay them to make movies for them. At least they are smart enough to keep their tainted hands out of the creative process.

things get downhill for both channel.
now they've become more and more Srivijans... favoring Malaysians and Singhaporeans (and sometimes... Indonesians) over someone else.

personally i'm really enraged to see that. How can a United Aseans became reality if some 'Srivijayans' intiminading other races in the subcontinent..

well just my thoughs.

I don't mind history, discovery or nat geo channels.. some of their shows are decent, but it all gets real old fast because they replay everything to death.

Yay.. let's have a Gold Rush marathon for the people who didn't catch it the first 87 times!

Yup. It's been downhill since the early 2000s. I remember being four or so and watching it with my grandfather when they actually talked about the FACTS behind ancient empires, Napoleon, greek philosophy, and other cool stuff. As opposed to "MYSTERIES OF THE INCANS/ NAPOLEON/ AZTECS/ EGYPTIANS"

The smithsonian channel is pretty good if you have more than basic cable, as is National geographic.

There used to be some real gem documentaries on History. Before the 2000s, they were still prone to horrible marathons (one week, I looked at the channel guide and saw nothing but WW2 docs 24/7 from monday to monday).. Then they had a couple good shows, like Warriors, but of course they take it away again.

Here in Germany, at least the NatGeo channel that I get is ridiculously bad about "marathoning" TV shows, and it goes on a rotational basis which is the worst: plane crash shows, weather disaster shows, some "i survived prison and i have no idea how" shows, and "Hitler was the most evilest perzon evar! and we're gonna show you how, again and again, and in a "different" way....

I do miss Warriors, and shows that showcase "little covered" aspects of wars (such as the Montgomery Documentary on his role in Africa), or older stuff thats out there.

Hell, "A&E" stands for "Arts and Entertainment". Watching people fight over someone else's left behind junk in a locker is neither.

This is why I don't have cable.

Well, I like watching Dave hester throw his money around, thats kinda entertaining isn't it?

And come on Chum-Lee is amusing, same with the 'old man'. I kinda like watching people try to sell there junk for gambiling money in Vegas

edit, oh yeah, Vietnam in HD, that should be kinda neat I liked WWII in HD and colour, although I grew up watching World at War in B &W and that intro music is just haunting, same with the narorator (sp blah), he's got such a powerful voice.

some marathoning is good. but now. much of the shows on the two channels are more or less a copy of local Thai docu shows (sometimes the local folks here did better jobs, but not every shows). the rerunning of the same and un-updated docu shows are a pure horror. by the time Saddam Hussein was henked. the History Channel stills repeating the series which says as if he still alive and ruling.

now i'm a fan of french TV5. while I have no francophonic skills. every french docus are much more interesting. (last time I watched "Envoye Special" and the topic they reveal is quite close to me. the "Eau de Chine" .. yes i'm refering to a a counterfeited brand-name perfumes. the counterfeitings of things like Chanel No.5 as seen here in Thailand, (and even within, or around Paris!!!) are all made in China, and it becomes very neat to the point that only a delicate lab work can distinguish the counterfeited perfumes and the authentic ones.

I do have 'cable service' though

To be fair, it is one of the only reality shows where you're likely to find a cast composed primarily of "manly men", which grants it some unique hilarity.

Frazzled on Top Shot. Do we really want a reality show where Frazzled is without the civilizing restraint of She Who Must Be Obeyed, but has access to firearms? Wait don't answer that...

Announcer: "In today's challenge you have to prove your skills with a combination of M14, Colt peacemaker, and one throwing axe. Frazzled you've won the toss and can go first."
Frazzled, picking up the axe. "It is a sign from the Great Dachshund, all your souls are belong to us. There can be only one!"

You are not alone. Those two really suck these days, they are just like you say. Ancient Aliens - lol why is that on the Hitler Channel - sorry the History Channel?

TV sucks. I moved mine downstairs 3 years ago, when my daughter was born, those two combined put a serious crimp on my TV-watching. Now that everything is HD, I don't even get the 3 rabbit-ears channels. Couldn't care less.

The History Channel is great! But I am a WWII buff ;D. It is quite heavy on the WWII stuff, but they got quite a lot of other stuff.

Example

Celts
Did China discover America
Battle of Gettysburg
Civil War
The Koren War
The British Empire

and lots more!

The Discovery Channel is also very good. Actually, all I watch is Nat Geo, History and the Discovery channels ;D

Ahh yes, Merlin is the best show I have seen in a long while. It saddens me that I have to wait for the 4th season to make it online somewhere for me to watch it(as I have no cable )

TV Sci-fi has gotten good now that there is fairly cheap and moderately good CGI avaliable. And all the good writers are writing Sci-fi now.

More good news is that its only a matter of time before 40k makes it onto the Sci-fi channel. GW just needs to sign on a contract that will keep the fluff unmolested(shouldn't be too hard to do) It could be a real cash cow for them.

History channel (at least in the UK) seems to be showing non-history stuff, like shows about pawn shops, dangerous roads and rubbish like that. If i turn on the history channel I expect a documentary about ancient greeks or something, not some old guy going in to a pawn shop with an ancient radio, hoping to get $500 and only getting $75...
