I'm sorry, the title of the article did say that, so I guess the author of the piece can be attributed to blaming her. The actual research piece the article referred to said "Obviously she played a part in getting beat, or whatever,", which is not the same as saying she deserved it.

In reading the NPR article, what really stood out was that "Close to 50 percent of the young people we surveyed thought that Rihanna was actually responsible for the incident..." which is where my original sentiment came from.

Unless she came after him with a hammer or something I think it's frankly sick and pathetic to blame... ahem... the victim in such severe domestic violence cases.

I think the numbers come from stories like Sonophos where the girl pushed him down the stairs and still said he hit her. Once they know of one woman (or girl) that lied about it or that bragged about pushing someone to the brink the level of empathy drops as well as rationalizations.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I'v heard many people argue this as well. I think, because very little about the relationship has come out, this may be a result of "Hollywood relationships are tumultuous." or "Chris Brown was such a good boy."

Which, admittedly, Hollywood relationships are tumultuous, and Chris Brown had a pretty clean image prior to the incident. And people do like to read into celebrity drama, which is basically why it exists in the first place.

We aren't talking about a smack or two, which is also inexcusable mind, but he seriously beat the gak out her.

She almost certainly did play a part in the incident, at least one beyond being hit. That doesn't make her culpable, but there are things one can say to another person that are tacit to a slap in the face (Which, in this case, doesn't justify retaliation. Women can generally hit men indiscriminately according to social norms.), and we are talking about a guy that had been pretty image conscious up until this point.

Interesting to see that a couple years later, after Brown was Convicted and the pictures of his beaten girlfriend are practically in the public domain there are still alot of folks who blame the victim.

Say what you will about celebrity culture getting too much attention, but this incident shone a very bright light on the epidemic of domestic violence and the lack of support that women (and men) give to those who have been abused.

I don't have any great solutions, but when 1 in 4 women experience abuse and the evidence is that their peers aren't taking them seriously then something is very wrong.

As the article above suggests, the "rhiana-blame" was stunningly widespread. When the incident happened even our neighborhood paper's celeb-watcher downplayed Chris's violence by suggesting that Rhiana had broght it upon herself. I'm not a follower of pop music, I recall this incident because a friend of mine was so furious she wrote an article to the editor about it.
