Um, Whats wrong with people listening to soley metal?
It's just a stereotype. Gamers that listen to metal/acdc/rush/led zepplin etc. Granted I do listen to rush, but I wouldn't be caught dead listening to ac/dc.
And as a musician, it is annoying when people limit themselves to only one style of music.

I agree. I discovered my love and passion for music in Metal and all its sub genres, but I soon diversified from it, and now I have sixty gigs of music on my laptop and an additional thirty on my external hard drive.

I've been kustom-building an Ork army for the past few months, including my own Tater Titan the past few days, and I think my playlist has centered around the following:
I opt for things that are easy to zone out to, whether because of the style or simple familiarity. Gives me something pleasant in the background without being distracting, as spoken word or new and hard/high energy music would.
There's an industrial (mostly softer stuff, as opposed to more grating EBM - think more In Strict Confidence and VNV Nation than HOCICO, but expect all three to come up, eventually ) webradio station that I like to paint to, as it's mostly familiar stuff, by now, but the size of the library and the small but consistent cycling of the tracks therein are enough to keep it from going stale.
Doom is great (especially the groovier West Coast-style stuff) for painting, too. Once you get down to business, you stop noticing whether you just listened to a song or an entire album (sometimes they're the same thing, e.g. Sleep's "Jerusalem"). Not as great if you're just slipping in half an hour here and there, but I love it for longer sessions.
I also like using Last.fm to form a "station" based on a particular artist I'm in the mood for if I'm doing scattered bits and pieces of projects. It tends to make me want to keep stopping and checking what I'm listening to, so it's less than ideal for longer/more focused sessions.

Painting is also a great excuse to burn through cartoons. Painting and custom modeling alone, I've gone through the entirety of Harvey Birdman, Archer, Frisky Dingo, and The Venture Brothers. Up next, Space Ghost!

I usually paint when I'm listening to a radio show called Coast to Coast AM, which is on in the Midwest from midnight to 4 am. They discuss a wide range of topics from current events to the wildest conspiracy theories. Failing that, I have a playlist of over two dozen CD's ripped to my windows media player. I have it on shuffle, so it's like my own personalized radio station with no commercials. I also sometimes listen to an internet interview show called Red Ice Radio, which comes from Gothenburg, Sweden. Same as C2C, but without the occasional, irritating religious undertones.

While it may not be music, I listen to Warhammer Fantasy/40k podcasts while painting, they are length, informative, and down-right hilarious. Perfect for your painting session. Here are the main two that I listen to:

My suggestion is terribad. Absolutely horrendously terribad. To get twice the warhammer experience (i am assuming its warhammer) in the same amount of time (and savagely shred whatever self esteem I have), I listen to the warhammer audio books....

To glimpse the future, you must look to the past and understand it. Names may change, but human behavior repeats itself. Prophetic insight is nothing more than profound hindsight.
It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.
