And the average weight is significantly less.

Yup.

There have always been more of the 'bad' than 'good'.
It means the really good ones stand out from the pack so much more.

Of course, back then, outside of Japan, it wasn't called "cosplay".
You had a "stage" (for the costume parade on stage, come out, do your bit, twirl and go back) costume and the "hall" costume (which was for walking around in - for the comparison, think "extra"/"long shot stunt double" or "Hero". Stage costume was supposed to be seen from 5-6 metres away and look good. Hall costume had to look good close up. You could get away with more with a stage costume.

If people really want eyeball and cortical scarring, I can post some pics of people in "Star Blazers" costumes from the 80s. The carpet/wallpaper combos in those date from the 70s and the costumes are bad, too.

While I admit they look a little older, you are also looking at it from a different point of view, namely a present day POV. Check out a high school year book from 1982. Everyone in the book looks like they are 30, but they are all 16-18. Maybe it has something to do with the hairstyles.

Talk about blast from the past. I'm also seeing a distinctive lack of fat in those pics.

Also seeing a distinct lack of taste; I can barely stand the carpets and furnishing when I look at them in a photo, imagine what it'd have been like in person...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

The box once opened cannot be closed again.

"Tron guy" makes them look good.

White lycra backlit is transparent is all I need to add to that.

Now, off to dig out the box of photos.
