But really what is the great advantage to using one of these programs?
You don't have to carry around 6 Codecies to class / work / nightclub.
And you can work on lists while staring at your phone in the emergency room lobby.

If you don't mind doing some addition manually, the trial version of Army Builder is great to try out- lets you put in 3 units, and you can always jot them down, delete them, and then add more.
Of course, if you do this, eventually you'll want to spend the $40 to have the full version . Well worth it, though!

+1 for BattleScribe. But I'm biased. I wrote the bugger
Seriously though, over the last couple of years its matured a lot and now works well (again, biased). I certainly think it's worth a try.
It's not without it's problems though, to be fair. It can be hard to get set up with the data files you need to get started (I use the randomhit.org repo - it's a great place to start). I used to host data files too until I got a certain email ( http://goo.gl/74tE1).
Once you're set up though, it works well and you can build/tweak lists pretty damn fast. The desktop version also has all the tools you need to create and share your own data files, or fix the ones you already have. Even so I'd recommend double checking against your codex before submitting your list to a tourney.
I'm always open to comments/suggestions/criticism so let me know what can be done to make it better
P.S. If you do have problems with a data file (wrong points, missing options etc), let the guys who made the file know so they can fix it (or submit the fix you already made). That way we can all benefit from your work

Not if you use Hordes, as the data files for it hasn't been updated in a long time, and is missing half the units.

I am sorry to hear that.
I only use Army Builder for 40k, as that is the only game I play.
As the files used are only as good as the people who write and maintain them, it is very possible that Hordes has been neglected. I have absolutely no reason to doubt your statement concerning that.
Luckily for me, the 40k files are maintained by the dedicated individuals over on AB40k Maintainers.
http://www.ab40k.org/
Having said that, I still feel that Army Builder (the program) is the best one on the market. It is a stable maintained program with a load of different customization options.
Don't like the colour? Change it.
Don't like the font? Change it.
Don't like the look of the printed army lists? change it.
Would you like a fully customized army list with pictures of your models next to the entry in the army list? Change it.
Would you like a very simple print-out of the army list with minimal clutter and just upgrades listed? Change it.
Don't feel the statlines are necessary on the army list? Change it.
Would you like your 40K/Fantasy list printed out on action-cards a la Warmachine/Hordes? Change it.
Would you like to play Planetstrike/Cities of Death/Apocalypse/Spearhead/Imperial Armour, and have Army Builder validate using those rules? Change it.
I am pretty sure you got the idea six examples ago.
Yes, there is a (one-time. No, there is NO monthly/yearly fee required) price for such a program.
The program itself is "empty", just like Excel and Battlescribe is.
If you only play one army/game you might be able to make armylists faster (though I highly doubt it).
But Army Builder is the perfect solution for the player with multiple armies/games, who might enjoy the occasional "special" game, and, in my experience, no other program offers the wide range of options that Army Builder does.
Note that all "you"s in this post is, with a single exception, generic "you"s, and not specifically directed at you, BuFFo.

I'm just throwing out another +1 for Army Builder. It's really a great program. It's kind of pricey, but if you make lists as much as I do (once or twice a week, generally ) then it's a fantastic program. It's $40 to buy it and a year of updates, then $12.50 yearly for updates only. From the looks of it, you can keep going without paying the extension fee if you don't want to, the yearly cost is just to keep it up to date. So if you only play one army, and it's not due for update for a long while, then you don't need to bother paying for it continually.
Honestly, Steelmage99 put it pretty good. It's just a fantastic program. Don't let the $40 price tag daunt you - it does all the work for you. Adding up points, making sure your list is valid, even making sure that you're only taking upgrades and wargear that are allowed each unit (as in, if a unit can choose one of a bunch of options, it'll gray out everything else once you've selected it). Beginner or veteran, it's worth the price. Heck, I even discovered that I was 15 points under in the list I run at my weekly league with Army Builder.

Sorry to pick on you but this misnomer really needs to be dispelled - and I posted about it earlier but it seems to have been missed. The $12 or whatever you pay yearly is simply to access the Wolflair servers from within AB itself - nothing more. It is not a yearly fee to keep it updated; you can choose not to pay the fee and download the files yourself. The fee is simply to enable you to click the 'update' button with AB and download the files automatically.

Unless they've changed it, it is to update it to a new version. I had 3.1 for several years and did not keep up my license donations to them to permit them to develop Hero and Card Lab. There was ZERO support from LW during that time. When 3.2 came out, not only did they want to charge me the license fees, but also the license fees in arrears for the years they did nothing to it. Even if this has changed to be a non-outrageous amount, I will not support them for not supporting the software. The whole thing put me off their product and won't be going back. The other thing is that they have crap in terms of quality for datafiles for about any game that isn't 40k or WFB.
Battlescribe all the way.

Considering they are legally obliged to keep as far away from any data-files as possible, that isn't surprising.
You just go ahead and blame Army Builder (the program) for incomplete data-files in your head, and we'll just stick to reading informed opinions.

Considering that whoever maintains the datafiles is irrelevant and that the success of the product is determined by mainly by the quality of its datafiles maybe you should try and not be a smart ass and acknowledge his point without trying to appear superior and oh so much better than the rest of us who disagree with your assertion at the end of your post.

I'll put in my vote for Batlescribe. I've got it running on my Droid and my Kindle fire ( no, it isn't in the amazon store, but you can manually transfer the free .apk file and it works fine, PM me if you want instructions) and between those two, i'm plenty happy. I put together my own data files, and it really helped me with getting the know the ins and outs of my codicies/ army books. Having it on my Kindle is what really wins it for me, since i can just have it display my list and show my opponent in a pick-up game without having to carry my laptop around, and it's much easier to read than my phone.

Except that army builder programs that do support those games work without a problem, yeah you're right. It's just luck that a program originally designed to work with WFB and 40k works with them and about every other game system just doesn't work right. Given the interface for AB data file creation, it's not hard to tell why.
