I prefer raised bases, it doesn't matter if its flat GW style ones or lipped PP styles ones.

I just don't like flat bases to the extent that I used GW slotta bases for my entire Bolt Action platoon even though they came with their own flat bases.

Circular bases such as the Infinity style for gaming. Easier to pick the model up by the base with this type of base.

The wound lipped bases such as warmachine bases are great for display models. The rounded edge on this type of base makes it difficult (for me) to pick up by the base.

Though i don't really play their games anymore - i have to go with the ones used by Malifaux, PP, and Dark Age. Having Played WM/H, Infinity, Warhammer, 40k, malifaux, dark age etc. at one time or another the Round Circular base with lip is easily the easiest to base and easiest to work with IMHO.

I like clear bases as it ensures my bases match the terrain.

I am turning towards clear bases as well for Sci Fi at least. I would say for gaming as flat as possible or clear depending on what you are playing. For display I like lipped bases.

Square bases are clearly superior.
You can do everything with them you can do with round bases, but unlike round bases they also allow for having nice ranked up units and more efficient storage.
Clear bases are also better, if only because I dislike basing.

I like the PP bases, just look nice and sweet when you add stuff to the base, and allows for you to write what something is just in case you worry about a conversion not being clear.

One of the things that kept me from collecting GW models for the longest time was the dorky base that looked like a plinth or the bottom stair of a staircase or something...

I much prefer a subtle base, so the emphasis is on the model. The WOTC D&D figures got it (the bases at least) right. Thin, sturdy, unremarkable. You can use the model in any setting and the base just blends in.

I'm seeing more and more the clear acrylic style bases. I may have to give those a try...

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

I prefer Secret weapon miniature bases that are round with a recessed area.

I say this because I cannot stand GW bases.

i dont like the warhamhorde rounded lips for some reason.

inset ones are kinda nice too but i dont like those or resin ones as they dont sit properly on uneven tables

I prefer the GW 1" bases (not slotta!!!) so I can fit fender washers to weigh the model down and make it more stable.

For multiple environment games (space, lava, field, moon...) a thick (=heavy) clear acrylic would be a close second as stated so it can fit in anywhere.

I prefer bases, because that allows me to place my models on a flat surface more easily with whatever pose I'd like them to have. I have done 1/72 soldier models before, it's a bloody nightmare to place it on a diorama without pinning it on it. It's fine with dioramas, but playing a wargame, I'd like to move my pawns thank you very much.

As for style, sqaure base has one issue: rigidity. Placing a round-based model next to another without aligning up their edges looks very out of place just because the shape of bases that form because of this.

I also never see a point of rims for round bases. Having made a few Khador units, I must say the simplicity of the rimlesss roundbass looks far better.

It completely depends on the model. For instance, a Skitarii Ranger Alpha looks great on his round, but a display piece for a painting comp or whatnot is very nice on a Warmachine base.

Flat steel bases, very low profile that can become more or less invisible, can easily work with magnetic movement trays without jacking the model up (tray + mag sheet + base is roughly the depth of a normal base). Models stood side by side hide the base edges.

Also very nice for storage and transport, downside is no sloped space to put unit markings.

Even better, can be replaced with coins for some seriously cheap bases if you want round ones.

Hi all...
I prefer round ones and support Leopard thesis about steel. Even if you can't put unit markings along the edge, using steel, 'u can attach magnetized paper, temporarily, under the base but, overall your showcase will be grateful (I hate the black empty space made by sloaping edge)

I do love black rimmed round bases, but square just Looks that much better. I am a firm believer that a mini should not protrude over the edge of a base, and ist easier to do that with square ones.

I voted round.

I loved formations in WHFB, but the square bases were a massive pain as they're too small on pretty much all infantry models, round bases only require suitable movement trays to make ranking up possible, and end up with a bit of extra space around them. Packed ranks can look great, but most of my units that can fight like that need to be formed up in a very specific order or they don't fit, which is not fun at all

Round 40k style flat edges and Warmachine/Malifaux style lipped edges. Both have their charms. Flat edges are good when you've got a lot of models together. Lipped edges are good for more unique models because the lipped edge creates a frame around the model, making each base a mini diorama.

It's hard to say; for old-style fantasy I was happy with square bases, but for most models 20mm is too small, 25mm should really have been the standard size, with a larger one for Saurus, Chaos infantry etc.

What I liked most is that the square bases formed in ranks can be styled for an entire unit; e.g- a river running through the middle or such, which also helps you to rank them up correctly every time (as there's always something that doesn't fit right otherwise).

I like the idea of switching to round bases to play smaller games of Age of Sigmar; but with GW immediately going straight to its old antics of trying to upscale the game I think round bases are a terrible fit for massive battles. There's a reason people used movement trays in fantasy, shunting squads on round bases around is annoying enough in 40k at the sizes the game seems to be oriented towards (couple thousand points).

For smaller games though round bases are great, and that's the time of games I play.

So my answer (which, the poll can't fully reflect) is that I love proper round bases for small games, but prefer square bases and formations for proper bigger games, which I do not consider 40k or AoS to be suited for (I play 1,500 points max in 40k most of the time).

Round standard GW ones, and as small as as can be without making being too small to encompass the model's feet or effect its stability(25mm in most cases). I dislike the trend towards larger bases for reasons of pure practicality - its a pain in the neck trying to fit bases >=32mm models in alleyways, doorways, tight area terrain etc.

I also wish bases were transpareant so that one can see they underlying game surface instead of having to paint them. As good as a well modelled base looks, it always struck me as daft when it clashes with the actual terrain they're in e.g. grass based models with the sergeant standing on a big rock... in the middle of a metal floored bunker...it just looks jarring.

I let the dogs out
