I'm glad the figures will be in metal.
IMO resin is acceptable for a small skirmish but does not have the structural strength for thin parts when there are lots of models on the table to get caught up with.
I think they look great.

Amazing stuff, cannot wait to see them IRL.
The only disappointing mini is the Hero for the Kuge.
He has obviously never held a sword before in his entire life - and is doing the worst attempt on a hasso no kamae I have ever seen...
I will degrade that imposter to standard bearer
Edit: Upon examining the rank and file there are some "no clue on what I am supposed to do with this weapon-thingy"-minis also... - such as a samurai in a Christopher Lambert-esque pose and the archer with the horizontal bow (with the arrow on the wrong side).
In total (ignoring the peasants in warrior gear) they look ace though.

Very nice indeed! The models themselves are very detailed and full of character. I feel that the arms look a little skinny compared to the legs but perhaps this is just the result of the armour?

Yeah, it's the armor. The pants (hakima) were made for movement and very puffy (kind of like MC Hammer back in the day). That's what's throwing you. A lot of great detail in this line.

Really cool models, I can think of tons of uses for these. Glad to know its not a historical game since the Samurai in the first pic has a Ninja-to instead of a Katana.. To a samurai the katana was not only his weapon but a status symbol, to use a peasant sword instead would be pretty shameful.

<minor quibble>The origin of the ninja-to is not peasant swords, it's Ninja movies</minor quibble>
(sorry, as someone who has read more Japanese history books than any sane person should, 'ninja' is a four letter word.)

Weather or not Ninjato actually existed is debated since all there are are replicas from the period, however regardless of origin that sword is not a katana or wkizashi so it just looks odd to me.
Not sure why ninja is such a bad thing for you. Sure they are portrayed in movies nothing like they actually were, they none the less did exist.

"Ninja" did exist, but only if you use the word as it is *meant* to be used - a verb. Like "Viking". A farmer sent to spy on another town/city, a warrior riding ahead to scout the opposing forces, these are all acts of ninja. So to would a clan of Iga samurai who specialise in doing all these things.
A guy in black pyjamas throwing shurikens and disappearing in a puff of smoke is Edo-period (at earliest) fantasy, and has no place in a discussion of the Sengoku Jidai or earlier.

Quick, tell Osprey that they released a book on something that doesn't exist! They might be interested

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I haven't read Turnbull's ninja book, but from what I've heard it's actually not so bad and he apparently does specifically rule out the black pyjamas... while Osprey's artist didn't get the memo it seems.
Turbull's samurai Osprey books in general are a very mixed bag and he has a habit of repeating the same information in just about every book he releases. The books by Anthony Bryant are far, far better (and his sengokudaimyo.com site is a pretty incredible resource too).

Not sure what you are implying, Kroothawk - but the "black clad secret assassins"-style ninja is nothing more than a myth, exactly as Groundh0g was stating.
No more real than tengu, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Men in Black, Santa Claus, Vikings with horned helmets, Marco Polo doing all of his adventures himself, Jesus making wine from water, etc.
Sorry if this crushed some illusions.
As for Osprey getting their facts wrong - they obviously sacrified truth for profit.
I have that book and it is full of contradictions - as if they couldn't go all in with the lies.

Even Turnbull (who, among historicans, is a bad joke) admits that "ninja" is just a hoax (although one that earns him some serious bucks).

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Does anyone have a clue when these come out?
Woops.....got my answer....
From their announcement:
"I'm writing to you to inform you that the release date of the game and miniatures has been delayed. We are going to change the production from resin to metal, so we will take time to get ready the release of this game. But we are doing this to be able to offer more affordable prices and so we can manage the expectations we have created. Besides that, the beta version of the game rules will be soon ready to be released."

The black pajamA thing in Reguards to ninjas come from japanese theatre as the would use stage hands to fulfil a ninja like role, the audience would be so used to ignoring stage hands that they would not see the assassin coming.
But yeah ninja as we think of them have no evidencethat they existed. It is pretty safe to say they would have employed some kind of spy.
Other option is that ninja wereso good that they left no proof :p
Also really looking forward to these and plan to re order.
