I try to limit myself to two armies per system just to avoid spending all my free cash (and storage space) on models, but they do tend to be relatively opposed. So, in 40k and epic I run Craftworld eldar as well as Thousand Sons

I started out with Eldar and now that it's pretty much complete (as far as any army is ever complete) I've branched out to the Sisters of Battle.

Well, thinking about it now I have far too much stuff!
About 3000pts 40k Marines, although recently sold an IG army
a 2000pt VC army for WFB
Haqqislam, Nomad (and soon CA) armies for Infinity
About 2000pt late-war US Armoured Rifles for FoW

Third group: The commitment-phobes.
I've gone through six armies and I only play my new 'fad'... I hate myself for it, but it's true. Maybe it's simply 'cos my room at Uni is so small I can only fit what I'm working on, but nevertheless, 3 years playing and yet I just sink so much time and money into hopping onto different bandwagons!

I play space wolves as my main army and it is favorite. I have also been playing it the longest.
I also play eldar, I started them beacuse I wanted something different to play everynow and again. playing against the same opponent all the time things can get a little samey. I chose eldar beacuse I knew they would be a different play style.
I have a skaven army also. I chose this one again for a different play style still, the randomness of the army and hordes and hordes of nefarious rats appealled to me.

When I first decided to play 40k, I picked up the old Necron codex. My friends discouraged me from playing them and told me to try Craftworld Eldar instead.
Now I have Mechdar and hybrid Necrons. I love the Eldar speed and the ability to reroll dice (very handy when you roll like I do), but I love the Necrons for their tricks. As the past masters of the galaxy who can manipulate psychic powers like no one else, I think Eldar should also be able to manipulate rules like that, and it saddens me that they can't. Someday the new Eldar codex will come out and the world will be full of fluffy kittens and rainbows again (unless Cruddace writes it). Until then, I shall just have to settle for helping Nemesor conquer any part of the galaxy he can reach.

I started with tau, infantry with heavy shooting.
Then I.g with pretty much the same style.
Then Dark eldar solely for aesthetics then i turned out to be really good with them.
Now onto chaos for a very combat heavy army.

I started the hobby collecting Space Marines, went on hiatus for ten years and collected SM again.
Then I got into the gaming side and ran an ork army that was really fun to play. Nob bikers remain my favourite unit just for all the butthurt they caused followed closely by what has to be the unit that allows the hobbyist the most freedom - the boomwagon! (Super accurate for an Ork force!)
Then I got about 500 points of Tyranid Warriors because I thought it would be fun to run as low a model count 1500 as I could before selling them again.
Then I sold everything and started a Forgeworld heavy Crimson Fist army and Tau, which I confess is because I know they'll get a new codex sooner rather than later (and I love the battlesuits and colour scheme freedom.)
I'm definitely a bit of a magpie though, I keep hunting down old Games Day Space Marines and will be buying a ticket just for the mini (I have no intention of going again, it was so boring the last time - I don't know what I was expecting!)
Bottom line though is that I'm a painter and a converter before a gamer and that drives my spending primarily.

I have all of the 40k armies at at least 2000 points. I have an army for all of the loyalist first foundings and 2 of the traitor legions. When I build a new force I build it to match the background for them ie. Ultras have the fourth battle company, White Scars are all on bikes. After I build an initial army I will add cool units overtime as it strikes my fancy.
For Fantasy I have tried to have a force of order and a force of chaos for each different play style. So far I only have 5 painted but I have the models and plans for 3 more.
For Lord of the Rings I have built my armies as recreations of what was in the books/movies. I have Rohan, Minas Tirith, Mordor, and fallen realms.

I have mech BA, which is all about being mobile, efficient and responsive. To counter that, I have foot guard, which is all about not giving a damn and marching forwards. Mixed results with this army, but fun to play. And for giggles, I own a small Tau force which is all about stealth. I am out of range or made up of stealth suits. Its good fun.
I also have Khador for Waramahordes, which is more of a "I love playing as the Russians" thing, but it is all about blowing stuff up, which is good. I am also eyeing Yu-Jing for Infinity, because I like the themes Imperial Japan brings up, I like Ninjas and they have a transforming spider thing.

I am the first group. Started playing IG, and, slowly moved away from foot slog army to mech, with 8 chimeras, 8 leman russes, and a few other tanks added in there. So, moved away from foot base army to veteran style.
My second army, Orks. Kan Wall. Not sure what I was thinking getting all those then, having to paint them. Alot of drinking ahead to get the painting done.

I play DE and TAU in 40k.....
The to me are polar opposites. One army stays back and shoots and retreats to avoid CC.
The DE are even better at shooting than the shooting Tau army, and still excel in CC... They rush in as fast as possible unload the cargo and zoom around dakka'ing as much as possible....
WHFB I play Dwarfs.. very much like my Tau except that can hold their own in CC. They love to shoot those warmachines!
I am contemplating right now Skaven... they would be my first ever horde army... So again polar opposites to my dwarfs.

I had several armies for 40k until I sold them of due to a complet lack of intrest in the game. I own around four Fantasy armies but none except my Ogres are 100% painted.
My focus has shifted from WHFB/40k to LOTR due to the fact that I enjoy alot more, I now have Easterlings witch has been with me for years, and a smal Rohan army

I had long suffered from Shiny model syndrome and had seven active 40k armies simultaneously at my worst.
I have played/collected just about every 40K army available except Eldar and Daemons at some point.
In recent years I have come to my senses a bit and sold off all but my main force: Orks. Just not enough time to have so many, and I have tons of painting and projects to keep me busy for my Orks anyways.
My son's have started collecting IG and space marines, so i get to dabble in them by proxy...
