I am very guilty about this. I'll go out of my way to field specific models I have that I think look cool, even if they may not be the most "Competitive" of units. I play the game for fun, so even if I've got some ratlings on the field, as long as they look cool I'm having a good time

Man if you have pics I would love to see that, I think the Dreadknight is..well goofy, that sounds like an awesome fix.

I myself am building my army based off models and what i want to craft, paint. Not really off how effective it will be. They way i see it I am building the army for my enjoyment, so if it sucks a bit at first, so what. I am spending far, far,far more time building, painting and looking at it then I will get to spandex playing it.

I kinda do a mix. there are games where I am in the mood to watch the battle unfold perfectly, and win. In this part I would look at my army and grab based on rules. However, there are plenty of other games that I play where I am just looking for fun, and will either bring a fun unit that sucks (see Swooping Hawks) or do some tactic that throws everyone off...including myself!

I put at least two hours or so into converting each of my Tactical Marines, lol. And I'm working on completing all 100+ Marines of a Battle Company, as can be seen in my blog link

So yeah, I think there's a lot of value in having cool looking models, even if they aren't nearly as awesome as they look.

The entire 5th ed Tyranid army is summed up in this category. They look awesome and like they will tear everyone up. And then you have them face Space Marines....

Personally though I make my armies on appearance/what I find to be cool and largely ignore what's ineffective and what isn't. This is especially true for my Eldar.

I prefer looks over effectiveness when it comes to assembling my armies, but then I'm mostly a painter at the moment. That's why I'll have a Razorwing instead of an extra Ravager in my DE army and I have a Talos and Scourges and Reavers. I'll also be using Pirhanas in my Tau army.

And, if I ever get those armies finished and start on my Eldar army proper, there will definitely be a Forgeworld Avatar in there.

When I came back to 40k, I started a guard army, which, frankly, doesn't HAVE cool models. It's basically everything on a chimera chassis, or one of an endless number of guarsmen just holding different weapons. The addition of vendettas did change this slightly, but I'ven't seen to it to buy one myself.

I think a huge number of (painted) infantry models looks cool in its own right.
Semi-tempted to get a huge bucket of troops off ebay or somewhere purely for the intention of fighting a pure Infantry Squad (i.e. no blobs) guard army.

Yep I have plenty of forge world models that look uber cool that I love to use and that are completely and total AT bait on the table and almost never accomplish anything successfully other than drawing fire.

The new model for Illuminor Szeras is amazing. Too bad he's terrible in any game above 750 pts. I was tempted to get him and use him as a regular Cryptek, but it felt odd wanting to field a character model as a regular model. Has anyone else ever fielded a unique model as a generic unit just for the cool model on the table?

Dark Eldar Mandrakes. The models are some of the best things to ever come out of Game Workshop. Their rules, on the other hand...

On the other side of the spectrum, we have Imperial Guard Veterans. They look the same as any other guardsman. They can also kill an average Terminator or Meganob squad in one round of shooting. The Command Squad takes this up to eleven if you run full Plasma Guns; and you can also take the Officer of the Fleet and the Astropath, who I never leave out of my lists.

I know Templars or any of my armies don't have bad rules, but looks have chosen my armies for me every time I start one (BT, Tomb Kings, and Menoth)

I originally wanted to start deathwatch, and looked at buying a chaplain to represent my character, but the finecast transition was happening and the only non terminator chaplain the LGS had didn't appeal to me, then saw the Emperor's Champion model and bought it along with a paint set that came with bolter dudes that day. I started painting them, then after reading on the internet a while then saw that Templars were crazy dudes with swords and land raiders and thought it was cool-Thus, I started my Templars.

From 3++

Rule of cool all the way. When I play this game I want to feel like I am 10 years old again damn it. Mecha dragon? Fing sweet. Dude piloting a robot, GOGO power rangers. I will not let my perceived maturity get in the way of my fun.

I will design an army around a model before I will play an army with models I dont want. See my triarch stalker lists lol.

Sword Brethren. They cost more than a standard initiate for very little gain, they don't even have a Veteran stat line. But once I cut off the bald heads and replaced them with suitable looking helmets, suddenly I can use them, They just look SO cool.

Oh also Terminators. Not only do they LOOK incomprehensibly cool, when used right they can dominate the field as well. (Especially ours, Furious Charge woop woop )

In the middle of the forest :(

This is something of an interesting topic for me, I'll just get into the armies that I play, I can't really say that I lean one way or the other to be honest.

With my Knights I feel really lucky that the halberds (which I think look the best) are so useful. I wish I could find a use for the Terminators because they were what got me into Daemonhunters in the first place years ago.

I don't want to use Psyriflemen partly because of the way they work and partly because they just don't look right to me. If I was going to do something to use those rules I'd probably make something akin to an Eldar Heavy Weapons Platform. I feel like Dreads just look...off...if they aren't built for CC. That's why I love the Furioso so much.

Speaking of Furiosos, I really like them, but sometimes it's tough for me to get past my notions of Sanguinary Priests first, so they often get sidelined when making lists. Other BA elites like the Sanguinary Guard get similar treatment, I wish I could use them just based off the model but they just DON'T WORK. So I've been fiddling with the idea of using them as Honour Guard ( I just need another JP Priest to use as a Novitiate.).

For Eldar I've shelved the entire army right now because of this particular issue. I WANT to use things like the Avatar and Heavy Weapons and Wraithlords, but they just won't work right now. I won't do 8+ Wave Serpent chassis, so in the closet they go.

When I first collected Space Marines, I had this mental image of a Devastator Squad in robes, with jetpacks, and all carrying Heavy Bolters. So I bought the Dark Angels kit, two Devastator kits and an Assault Squad kit, then proceeded to make it, and man did they look awesome (to me at least)! Unfortunately they couldn't count as having jetpacks and Heavy Bolters

My IG is all about 'rule of cool'. Hence, Veterans with respirators and converted plasma guns, 3x squads of Kasrkin, a Kasrkin Sergeant with a power weapon, a Lord Commissar, and Vulture Gunships with las cannons and Missile Launchers.

Its definitely not an optimum army, but I enjoy playing with it, and achieve enough wins to keep me happy.

I have, quite often.

I'd probably use my Repentia more if they could accomplish, well, anything without getting massacred first, so I go for a balance of models that look cool, and models that are useful.

What I really like are models that look good and are useful. Hence why I like my Uriah-bomb - I replaced Jacobus and the Crusaders with models from Reaper Minis for home games, but I have the GW models in case I decide to play at a GW store or other place where someone would disapprove of 3rd party models. I don't use them much anymore, because I feel like a powergamer when I do.

I guess it helps that my only opponent for the past few years is a person who thinks similarly. She mainly uses models that look cool, except if they end up accomplishing very little. If they end up accomplishing a lot - like those two plasma cannon guys that took out 15 Sisters of Battle in one round of shooting when I forgot she had them and bunched my troops up - then she uses them more often. So basically, I don't have to worry about taking on power lists or anything.
