Really stunning stuff, Mastiff. I really like your choice of palette for the Dark Eldar. I'm looking to start my own DE army early next year, this stuff is inspiring and has made me reconsider what I was thinking of for the main colour scheme. Yours is very bold. I may try going a similar route, but with a different scheme.

I'll probably base the flyers like the Talos. I'm not sure about painting the stems black though. It's an interesting idea, but I'd like to see someone else use it first

Squidbot: Traditionally I've painted everything in earth tones, but that gets boring. These guys are ideal for bold, garish colours because they're walking egos. The plastics are really nice to paint. You can definitely have some fun with the colours.

Less than a week, I think? Really fast (for me at least)

They all look even better on the battlefield, although you don't get to see them on the battlefield for very long...

Thank goodness, i thought you were going to say 6 hours or something. Im an extremely slow painter and sometimes wonder if im doing something wrong lol

Yeah... the average lifespan of an eldar in normal conditions? 8,000 years. Average lifespan with me as a general? 2 minutes.

Well, the purple just wasn't doing it for me. They reminded me too much of Howling Banshees, with the bone-coloured mask.

So I'm repainting them in the same colours as my other troops, but with eye-searing orange. When thye're finished I'll grab some decent pics, I really like how the weapons turned out (though they look like orang-ish streaks here).

Sick. I like the hot knife look of the blades. The purple in your army scheme in general feels like a nod to classic Dark Eldar/Elf schemes.

What are you seeing the pod things on their backs as?

Dang you've almost sold me on using Scourges for my crazy scheme. The hot knife is brilliant for power weapons I've not seen it before but want it.

uh... a shield that gives their flimsy-looking armour a save of 3+, but retains the mobility. Or, given their narcissism, they could just be sirens that scream "look at me!". I've seen them painted as canisters of poison or combat drugs, but I was thinking of a glowing light source.

I'm debating whether it's overkill though. I may paint the pods purple instead, so they glow a bit, but not as much as the blades.

Those modified Scourges are really awesome, the use of Talos parts give them that extra creepy edge that truly screams "DE" !!

The tubes on the shoulders were actually part of the scourge minis, not an addition from the Talos They don't serve much purpose for incubi (as 'trees so helpfully pointed out :b) but they definitely add character to the models.

I didn't see them until I bought the minis either; the wings get all the attention.

I like the pods orange, gives a nice balance to the blades.

I vote for them being colostomy bags though, evil space colostomy bags.

Well, TBH I was speaking about their weapons... For some reasons, I overlooked one or two as the Talos' "surgeon blades"

Where do those weapons come from, by the way ?

As for the pods, I indeed had never noticed them on Scourges models (though I've never seen some by myself, only on the internet )

Ah, the blades! Those are from Hellions; I removed one blade from each. I still have enough for my Hellions, just haven't got a round to painting them yet.

Getting back to work on these guys after a brief hiatus spent on Infinity.

The pink in the old photos was actually GW's warlock purple, but it was just too bright. I also realized that the DE have the best-looking helmets in the entire game, and painting black was a waste because you couldn't see the detail.

So, I went to a darker purple for their cloth items, switched the splinter weapons "glow" from pink to blue, and the helmets are now green like the rest of the armour. I made the shoulder pads purple to help balance the scheme out and frame the helmets so they stand out a bit. The eyes are still pink, as well as the glow in the back of their armour.

So, here's how they look now:



I'm a lot happier, and I've managed to complete the repaints of the entire unit in a week.

Next comes the Trueborn . I'm debating whether to make the darklight weapons blue or pink. The splinter weapons are now blue, because the pink was just too bright. I'm debating making the darklight weapons pink so they stand out, but the blue seems to have better contrast on the copper weapons.

I've tried one of each below. Your thoughts?

With the release of the new codex, they are, in the immortal words of Mr. Adams, "mostly harmless". But, I gotta take a unit of ten, they still work for me in smaller games. Here's the first two repaints:

I have to say that I prefer the blue. For me, the pink tends to blend in with the purples while the blue makes the weapon stand out. I think the blue provides a better contrast with the copper. It might be an idea to switch the hair colours on the models.

Yup, the pink blends with the purple. Changing the configuration of black and metallic parts might make them stand out even with the blue.

I bought myself present for Christmas; a DE Voidraven bomber. It was ridiculously-priced, so I didn't expect to ever get one. But I got some unexpected cash for Xmas and decided to do something foolish with it.

It's a beautiful model. Not $100 beautiful mind you, but plastics are still what GW does best these days.

WIP:
I like to paint the pieces before assembly because it's so much easier than trying to reach some of the spaces after-the-fact. The downside is that I end up wasting time painting areas no one will ever see. At least it gives me a chance to play with the colours.



I really like the bomber in the nose cone. It's the type of detail that makes me think their sculptors still enjoy their work, and aren't just putting in the minimum effort to follow the stylesheets for new models. It's creative and clever, and helps justify some of the cost.

I picked up a bag of elastic bands, and they're a go-send for holding plastic models together while the "Styrene Plastic Solvent Cement" melts then welds the pieces together. the clips give it a tighter hold to be sure it fits, especially larger pieces that are otherwise slightly warped. It took me a couple of hours of shaving plastic to get the top and bottom halves of the body to fit properly.


First layer of stippling. I'd like to get an airbrush but haven't had the cash lying around. Stippling takes forever, but I'm fairly happy with the results. It takes lots of blending thin layers with a shaky hand, which suits my style perfectly.


Finished:



Started some freehand, but decided to leave it 'til I'm excited about doing it. I've spent two months on the model, and really just want the damn thing finished, which doesn't really get the creative juices flowing.


The grass tufts are made by "The Army Painter", and are the bee's knees. I've been trying different grass effects for over a quarter of a century, and these are perfect. The grass comes glued in clumps, about 20 - 30 per strip, for about $5 Can. Pop 'em off as a clump, put a dab of glue on the underside and place them where you want 'em. The colour's good, with hints of brown streaks for a more natural appearance, and they are solid; I don't have bits falling off for the rest of the model's days.

I also throw a few leaves to add a bit more colour and texture.

I can get bases much faster these days, and don't hate them afterwards, so I'm making progress.




I've played it in three games now; it failed to show in one, but otherwise is very effective on the table.

Ship looks pretty killer. Would be nice to see the purple pattern somewhere else on it too, maybe up front between the cockpits.
