I'm reading all types of 40k forums on here and its sad how people are paying attention to your post just enough to say, "Look it up, stupid", or, "That paint job; good not great", or "It's on pg whatever". Why the heck are you even posting if you're not going to tell someone the answer!? What a waste of time on both ends. You had to type it and I had to read it. I don't even want to ask questions half the time for fear of be ridiculed for asking in the first place. Please explain this, thanks!

Giving someone the rules answer they're looking for doesn't do anyone any favours. They're only going to get someone else's interpretation of the rule, and if they want to use it in a game, they'll need to know where to find it in the rulebook. Just saying "some guy on a forum said the rule is this" isn't going to cut it, so telling them the page to look up rather than just answering their question makes life easier for everyone.

And telling people white lies about their paintjobs is a waste of everyones time. If they need to improve, then you should tell them how they can go about it.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

Red Pax wrote:I guess its just a matter of everyone being jaded and assuming you are an idiot for asking...well...anything. Okay I love this one, when you ask a question and someone says "someone already posted about this somewhere else, go look it up".

Some questions are also regulars, like FNP. There's likely to be a couple of FNP threads on the first or second page of the YMDC forum at all times. So after the fifth time you see a new one asking the same old question you do get a bit jaded. The nice answer is to paste in a link to the newest FNP thread that deals with it or just enter the rulebook page number. As said, DakkaDakka isn't a replacement for rulebooks - if you quote text it's because you're trying to interprete it, not because someone wants to know basics he could learn from reading his own rulebook and codex.

Well, this is the interwebs and most people perusing it are all hyped up on testoster-net while clad in web armor. There are always jerks in the warp...

and some of us, although good intentioned, have 'prickly' personalities to start with.

That said, many of us here are pretty friendly and most of those enjoy a good discussion concerning one of our favorite hobbies. The only time I get a bit peeved is when I feel I have to answer the same question eight million times because the thread starter didn't bother to use a simple search. Or, come here to the forum to read and discuss only to find the same 5 or 6 thread topics posted time and time again...

Other people have made lots of great points about your concerns and how - for the most part - Dakka posters are not 'jerks'...

Ultimately, its worth developing thick skin and maturity to post on forums/Dakka; it'll make your whole posting experience a lot smoother if you don't care for bluntless, barbs or rebuttals, IMHO.
Should you have any concerns the mods are always on hand.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

To be fair, there are also low post count posters, who after half a year on this forum start insulting their fellow members.

I wouldn't let it get to u. I'm not super great about using the search function either. I never can seem to use the right wording to get the answers I need. When in doubt just ask. If you get a rude response just ignore it. Usually you'll get a helpful person eventually. As for using the search function all the the time I don't. Not because I don't want to but sometimes I just want to have a "good conversation". (extra points to anybody that can guess were that movie quote is from).

One thing you have to remember especially on forums is you will usually see people full personality. Some people are more blunt and straight forward. It's not intended as rude.

I don't really think there are that many jerks around here. If you start taking things personally... then there would be. So just relax, don't take things personally, be nice yourself... and gentle

Usually i tell them the page reference in the rulebook/codex, since its apparently not allowed to post rules here :/

I was trying to help some ork guy who wanted to get rules for the dakkajet and i wrote the thing out and the mods took it down :(

I made a competely different experience, welcoming Dakka as a nice community. I also check a German WH forum and boy, gak just got real down there...it's ridiculous. Dakka is a nice play to hang around.

The "It's on pg" remark is not mean, I do it myself. Dakka is forum to discuss (!) rules, not tell them to people. A lot of people seem to think that it's enough when a friend of them explains the rules and then ask for the rest on Dakka. A few days ago, there was this guy asking what AP means. I mean...seriously? Buying the rulebook is the very first step, right before step two: reading it.

I'm not a dick, I'm a smartass, thank you very much.

Sarcasm is a language and art of its own.

That being said, I think the whole 'I'M NOT GONNA SEARCH IT, NUH-UH, YOU GUYS DO IT FOR ME' is the most childish attitude I've ever seen.

The search button is literally... right there. All it takes is a few typed words.

Honestly, searching is easier and quicker than posting in YMDC.

Here, lemme do up a little tutorial for you:

1. Click Search
2. Type 'Land Raider butts' into the search bar
3. Search
4. Read
5. Question answered!

As opposed to starting a whole new topic, posting a paragraph asking if your land raider is butts or not, maybe adding a little bit of fluff justification for it being butts, then sitting for half an hour or so waiting for an answer, only to get an indirect answer because we can't directly post the rules about butts and whether or not your land raider is butts on the forum. So then you have to go looking through your rulebook to the page about butts, which some kind fellow has been generous enough to give you so you don't have to go on some everlasting land raider butts journey.

I'm probably the nicest SOB you could run across, at least until you piss me off. Same is true for forum posting.

However, I do get irate at posts about "OMG new FAQ for chaos LOS dread change!" since it WAS THAT WAY TO BEGIN WITH.

That's probably my only beef, besides the standard of hating on WAAC players and lists.

Basically this isn't the 90s, forums all have search functions on them and they also have posting rules/guidelines.

If someone hasn't absorbed those 2 facts yet, their posts I usually ignore.

No one says 'look it up stupid' if they do you should press the yellow triangle of friendship to tell the MODs...
People don't appreciate false criticism, most people on Dakka will give an honest opinion and then hopefully provide ways to improve it. That's all i have ever seen in that section myself.
As has been said most users provide page references so people can see the wording for themselves and use it later on.

Dakka has a long standing official/unofficial rule regarding posting of rules on the forum. Don't do it. Better fir the forum to be safe than sorry.

As for not using the search function...
Well that's just childish...
