I always liked having my force led by a Rogue Trader. maybe the combination of pirate, merchant, explorer, and noble held a special place in my heart because that's the things my family has been doing for the past thousand or so years (my ancestors have been the quartermaster of the Queen Ann's Revenge, frontier explorers during the revolution, there's a king of crusader Jerusalem in there, and we're currently in business.). When I first started seriously collecting I saw the guard and said "that would be perfect for a rogue trader's personal army" and no matter what army I get sidetracked into I always come back to the guard. there's just so much diversity.

my friend was the one who got me into it, and when I asked him which army suited me more, he said blood angels almost instantly, he didn't tell me why though, but it was certainly the right choice, because I can never stay on one army for very long before I want to get back into the angels of blood, I just love their play style and everything, so just pick the army that matches your criteria, be it look, play style fluff or even (in my case) how well it suits you personally!

The question boils down to this - what are you still going to enjoy looking at after painting 2000points of the stuff.

For me - orks because I just love the rough and ready kit bashing stuff, like scrapheap challenge withough having to know the technical stuff to make it work.

If you know any fluff its easy to manipulate, but here is a quix you can take.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

opponent ask what you play . you say codex X , Y build . he goes sad. Then you know you picked up a good codex and a good list to play with

That's depressing.

I wanted to model my army after a Panzer Division, specifically the Panzer Grenadier Brigades or in English, Mobile Infantry.

When I put all my Imperial Guard tanks on the board, that look A LOT like a Panzer Grenadier regiment with my paint scheme and over all aesthetics... I know I picked the right army.

It just helps that they're shooty as all hell so I can pretend my Multilasers are MG42s, autocannons are MG34s, etc, etc.

I somehow managed to score a tie for Eldar and Ork on that. Time to consult the Allies Matrix!

I got into 40k when my pal's at school showed me the "leaked" pictures of the soon to be released 3rd Ed. tau codex.
The clean and streamlined looks in combination with the goodie-two-shoes fluff got me hooked instantly. It took me over a year to finally get to grips with them tactics wise though

A year ago, with the release of the Grey Knight codex I was finally able to complete the GK army I started years ago (yay for cheaper plastics!).

I keep the GK around mainly for looks and ease of play for guests.
Personally I much preferr the tau. I love their fluff, looks and the constant challenge they present on the table top. Tau have never been an easy army, but it's just so much fun to see them work properly, you just can't stop

When I got out of the army, I picked up the IG, because it was something I was in love with, and the tanks appealed to me. Over time, I've grown to love the fluff of regular joes fighting against hell-spawned horrors they can't possibly stand up to alone, but with the help of several hundred thousand of their buddies..

I love hearing how people found there choice armies and i hope people keep posting.

Thing about me is im two minds in general.

Part of me loves the heroic frontal battle charge towards the enemy, hero music playing and all that. Ride of the rohirrim style

and the other part likes more evil dark, stylish with an edge to them. Twisted and scary and i dont know which is the right one. Im not sure if to focus on fluff to decide, or models because some armies have really nice models but not others. Like the dark eldar have some models i would love to have but there play style doesnt suite me and i dislike there troops. I love the sisters of battle feel but hate that they are a sidelined army and very expensive. Every time there's something i like about an army theres usually two things i dont.

Have you ever thought about going to your local club and asking if you could play with people in small games to try an army out? We've had people do that at my store a bit when they're interested in a new army. However, we know each other very well and trust one another. This may not be an option at other stores.

Also, is anyone reading every post he has in Roger's voice? Surely I'm not the only person finding it funny that a guy with a Roger avatar can't make up his mind on which army to use.

Easy to manipulate, yes, but judging the score I got it's pretty damned accurate.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Don't overthink it - honestly I think the best way is by which ones look the coolest to you (as a whole)
Every army is capable of playing several different ways, so play style can afford to be secondary.
Even less important IMO is fluff - the 40k universe is too flexible to worry about fluff (thanks a lot Ward - STILL not over BA/Necron thing), and all the factions have fun backgrounds anyway.

Painting and modeling however, takes hours and hours - you best enjoy how they look when they are finished.

I've been crazy about greenskins since the 80s. I always had an affinity for D&D orcs and even introduced our larping game Dagorhir to the idea of "Monster" characters in the early 90s. We were a tribe of Orcs.
When I picked up 40k two years ago at the behest of a gamer friend, Orks were just the most absolute choice I could have made.
Never even had to consider it. I just started amassing orks.

Build a list of space wolves move 3 units of grey hunters to midfield the ccarsh into an enemy unit with a large units of Thunderwolf Cavalry. While you are doing this listen to Way of the sword and Red Warrior from the last samurai soundtrack, It will be epic.

Or hyou could do my next army maxed Bloodcrusher cav backed by plaguebearers.

I went into the local GW today had a look around with a friend who is just looking to expand his terminator army. I find myself draw to only two armies both i have ideas for.

Dark eldar and necrons, its defiantly going to be one of these armies. The necrons have some really nice leader models and i can imagine a really nice army build for them. With colour coding troops from command to normal troops. Bronze to gold.

And the Dark eldar because ive always been drawn to there twisted machines and with things named pain engines its just my thing. I love the special units the like grotesques and those kinds of units but not a fan of the basic troops but i like the rest.

But they are equal in appeal and im not sure which to land on.

Roll a die.

Alternatively, look at what might be involved with painting it. Painting the necrons might be easier.

I first picked guard because I liked the underdog feel of guardsmen fluff and the idea of actually being a shooty tank heavy army. Then I got crushed. constantly. I just didnt know how to play guardsman. I moved to tau and did ok, but in 5th I felt they were in too dire need of a codex to be competitive. I dropped out of collecting for a while then a buddy offered to give me his tourney prize support in exchange for painting his army. Watching him play, I noticed the local meta lacked ork players greatly. I read through their fluff and was in love with its sillyness. So i picked Orks and started a collection.

I was amazed at how much better they were for me. I could make the shooty, assaulty, fun, creative...It was a pure joy to play. Yeah there are units I wont go near for one reason or another, but overall I love Orks.

My Tau went to my Girlfriend after she blundered around with Marines. She wanted more shooty, less assaulty. The move suited her really well and she loves them. Glad to know my Tau didnt go to waste. (neither did the guard, i traded the army for a car)

I guess just find the army you connect with the most and more than one level.

My first army was Necrons before they were even a true army because i liked the idea of Robotic raiders and i was like 13... so i didn't read any fluff or know any races really. So when I played them... i was orginally enjoying them and then eventually annoyed they had no soul no tactical thinking it was just walk and shoot (again old codex) I eventually gave up on them.

I moved to Orks, The dull boring paint jobs suddenly exploded into wacky fierce and aggressive color schemes, with conversions and rewarding stories within the codex. Playing with them made my enemies laugh in minor worry about how they are going to deal with so many orks. And then just getting stuck in and killing everything that was unlucky enough to be charged I realized how perfect it was to me i never wanted to change! ... except i ran into hard times... and then i needed money and i did the most heartless thing i could and sold my orks for cash... I actually cried

for years i didn't play 40k because i didn't like the idea of starting up a new army but I eventually came around and despite how much i loved orks i was stupidly tainted by the Eldar panzy! I started an eldar army and... enjoyed it for awhile until i saw the new ork codex come out ... and in a twist of fate i fought my old orks with my eldar and was stomped so flat i was left stammering. My own orks showed me the power i could have at my disposal with codex creep but above all else i saw how much my friend who now owned my Orks was having fun and how little fun i was having as Eldar...I knew then i made a horrible mistake

I swapped my army for an assault on black reach and extra boyz and koptaz and such and never looked back since! years later I am still laughing all the way to the table i love my fluff my paintjobz and if nothing else the FEEL of the army just matches my brutal cunnin!

Follow your heart, sometimes the most powerful isn't the one you will get the best returns from especially if you aren't competitive (I am now and days but wasn't then) If you think the same way as the strategy of your army then you know you have a keeper. Which is why i hate shooty armies getting mad at assaulty armies because a lot of them legitimately are amazing tacticians; in short if you haven't made your Choice yet OP, you really need to focus on every aspect and find your perfect match don't just go with what is strong go with what you love.
