Yes the Siege of Castellax (finished it yesterday) main issue is it never even scratches on the surface of the inner workings of CSM. Most well-executed CSM books show a tragic side to them that's absent here.

I mean there's a slight nod here and there, for instance hinting that the Iron Warriors hate one another so much because when they look at each other, they realize how low they've all fallen. But it's a throwaway line.

I'm not asking for those dramatic heartfelt speeches given by that Chaos Sorcerer in Blood Reaver, but Storm of Iron was able to show what makes CSM tick and give them some shred of inner turmoil.

I liked Blood Gorgons. It was the best of that series by far.

Well they weren't chaos marines per say but a thousand sons and first heretic were excellent books. I also highly recommend storm of iron. One of my f favorite Warhammer novels and made me a big fan of the iron warriors

Maybe Chaos Daemons are so angry all the time because despite their near infinite intelligence they can't seem to forge anything more complex than a sword, an axe, or a staff

I like Flesh and Iron. It shows how you can turn to chaos without just being and "I am evil so I am chaos" story. Very good read, although based around Guard, Ecclesiarchy and traitors far more than marines.

Night lords trilogy is a good read, however goodluck trying to find a new copy of Blood Reaver (most places are out of stock). You can also check out the Iron Warriors and Word Bearers omnibus.

Another vote for Night Lord Trilogy + Lord of the Night. They rock. Plus Storm of Iron was a cool read.

Another one I liked that I found by accident in a thrift store is Atlas Inferno. It has the Harlequins and Thousands Sons in it. For one I never heard of it was really good.

I'll have a look on Amazon and try and pick it up, know I am kicking my self because I didn't pick it up at Barnes and Noble when I was on vacation in Cleveland (visiting fam) this summer. But I saw some places online asking stupid money for the book. I might end up ordering it after Christmas. Looking on B&N they're asking for over $1k in the marketplace which is outrageous!

I always really, really hated the very concept of Chaos Marines. They always seemed utterly nonsensical and one-dimensional to me. However, I was given a copy of Soul Hunter as a gift, and Aaron Dembski-Bowden completely turned me around on them. (The Night Lords, anyway, although I'm looking forward to seeing if he can do the same with the Black Legion.) The other two novels that follow it are pretty sweet, too. Unlike a lot of Black Library fiction, they have some deeper stuff going on than your standard wow-bang military fiction. If you like meaning in your stories, I would stick with Abnett and Bowden, personally.

Speaking of Abnett, Legion is a nice read, too. Although the protagonists aren't, strictly speaking, agents of Chaos, the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series (which begin with Xenos and Ravenor, respectively) are all about Chaos, those who combat them, and the vast gray area that separates and sometimes incorporates the two.

And, as always, I can't recommend Let the Galaxy Burn, edited by Marc Gascoigne and Christian Dunn, highly enough. It's a massive compilation of short stories, which contains multiple stories on every 40k topic, including a couple of very good Chaos stories, including The Lives of Ferag Lion-Wolf, one of the best chaos stories I've ever read.

In any event, hope that helps.

Let the Galaxy Burn is good. Dark Imperium is a good chaos anthology.

The Iron Warriors and Ultramarines omnibuses really got me into the Iron Warriors chapter. Blood Gorgons is one I'm currently reading and I'd have to say it's been a really fun read. Blood Gorgons gives you a really good look into the mind of a Chaos Marine and they actually go into a lot of the rituals and daily lives of the Chaos Marines.

Judging by the recommendations though, I think I'm seriously going to have to track down the Night Lords novels at some point. They aren't available as an omnibus yet though, are they?

I agree with this. The characterization of Talos is somewhat inconsistent from book to book, but they are very enjoyable reads.

The Iron Warriors books are pretty good too.
