Sadly it's not for sure, nothing is "sure" with GW anymore these days. However current rumors say that they will be the next xenos codex released, so possibly in May or November would be my two best guesses.
So true, Tau has "been the next codex" for so long I may not believe it even after I see it my FLGS.

I'd say yay to Kroot (cheap 100 pt units of 10 Kroot and 5 Hounds are a great distraction, shooting from cover or tying up a squad that's getting too close) but nay to deathrains (I don't know if I'm particularly unlucky, but they seem to be worse at anti-tank than railguns and with a lower rate of fire than pulse rifles, on an expensive and fragile platform)
You'd be surprised how often opponents don't know how to deal with stealth suits in their face. Or, better still, behind them in the rear armour...
Not a lot of experience in 6th, so pinch of salt, etc...

Without outflanking assault kroot just lost all value. they will get pummeled by even lasguns before they get to charge, and after they do they don't even have the most basic armor to shrug off any wounds.
They COULD work as a krootox forest-objective holding squad, nothing more. and that's not that reliable.
Deathrains are... weird now. they can glance stuff down now, but it is really valuable as they cost? hard to tell. S7AP4 is just worlds apart from S8AP3, heck even just S8 or just AP3 is worlds apart.
/right now, unless you expect large numbers or light armor I see no reason for it, unless you got the dual-hammerhead path and want some extra anti-transport punch to cover the relatively few broadsides.
As for stealth suits, I find them funny as hell. the ability to drop down that good amount of burst fire (I run 3 suits with 6 drones) in infiltration just wrecks an opponent that does not know how to fight it accordingly, simply by forcing him to play to my tune.

I agree, Deathrains are not as good as they were. However, they are still useful. A three man team should be able to glance AV11 to death in one round of shooting, and they are still good for shooting MC's. With their long range, and JSJ, they can get side armor shots on tanks too so they still do have some worth. I agree, they would be much better with AP3 or Str8, but as it stands, they do still fill a niche.

Missile pods are also amazing against Necrons. They kill warriors and can hurt all their vehicles once the quantum shield goes away.
I find them very useful for their long range, accuracy, and high S. they may not have the greatest AP value, but they still hurt most infantry and bikes just fine.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

While I am a fairly new Tau player myself, I can recommend this party trick:
Challenge a Space Marine player who likes mechanized lists.
Give all your fire warriors EMP grenades.
Distract his Heavy Support and Fast Attack with some Piranhas while your fire warriors get close.
Kill all of his tanks in one turn with your fire warriors.
Watch their expression of horror.
Profit.
This only works once, as this kind of trick can be easily spotted by someone who knows that you can do it.
However, at my friendly neighborhood game store, I have earned a scary reputation with my Tau, often charging just out of range of their melee, and tearing their entire armies to shreds in one turn, IG style.
The only reason I can do this, is because I have a fair bit of experience with Imperial Guard gun lines.
