This. Also how do you know they used GW glus and not Humbrol or Testors et al? Automatically Appended Next Post: Nevelon wrote:
If you ever want to do a weapon swap, or update a mini when a new codex comes out, not having everything permanent is nice (in concept) For example, I have 10 assault marines. When I assembled them you could have 2 plasma pistols in a 5 man unit for only 5 points each. Under the current codex, I can only field 1 special per 5, pistol prices went up, and flamers were added as an option. I used plastic cement. So when I went to update them, it took a careful time with a hobby knife to remove arms, and a lot of parts were destroyed in the process. If I had used super glue, a quick trip to the freezer and the arms would snap right off, no muss, no fuss.
I still like plastic cement, as I don't like arms snapping off mid battle. But I can see the allure.
Without snark - wouldn't it be easier to just build a new assault marine to swap in? Automatically Appended Next Post: DiabolicAl wrote:Im staggered why people would pay GW prices for glue (PVA particularly is insane) which is substandard when market leaders like Loctite are cheaper. Besides all my Superglues only last a while before they clog up and solidfy. Makes sense to spend as little as possible each time.
Also, this. Aside from the convenience when you're buying some models and need more glue, I can't fathom it.

Yes it would be. I, unfortunatly, am on a very tight hobby budget. I might get 3 to 5 things for my army over the course of a year, and that's counting bithday and Holiday presents. So when my choice is to spend some time modifying minis, or cash to buy some new ones, I'll break out the hobby knife. And as someone who has minis stretching back to the RT days, I've been forced to update minis who were either illegal or suboptimal a few times as codexes progressed.
For the most part, I don't care if I don't have every option. I just make lists from what I have. But I do recognize that some people do like to re make minis in diferent configurations, so the psudo-permanent bond of superglue can be a perk.

Can someone help me out, I'm genuinely confused here. Why wouldn't I want my models stuck together forever?
I used quite a bit of GW plastic glue when I played fantasy, and the nigh-unbreakable nature of the bond on the GW plastics was pretty sweet.
Just trying to understand what people's beef is with it?
I thought you might be new here but your post count says otherwise.
Only here will people complain that glue made by GW actually glues stuff together.

The gw stuff is rather smelly and that fething metal tube gets clogged all the time. But it works ok for my purposes. The testers stuff is pretty ace too, but I can't find a store round here that sells it.

I've used Plastruct Plastic Weld Solvent Cement for years. I love it. It is very cheap, I get it at Hobby Lobby, or various train stores. Good stuff. Mind you I prefer my plastic models to be permanently affixed. Can see it here:

I use the testors in a bottle for figures and small details and the tube for the inside joints of tanks. For super glue I use zap-a-gap, which I keep the tip clear with a piece of wire and store it in the refigerator.

I love ambroid proweld and the plastruct stuff the best. Tamiya is also good, but smelly. GW plastic glue is pretty much on the very bottom of my list and even then, I'd switch to superglue (Gorilla Glue superglue, P3, Loctite, all are fine) on plastics before I paid what GW charges. Humbrol plastic cement is also excellent. Testors thin stuff in the precision applicator is actually good as well. There are just so many better options than GW.

why is anyone using plastic glue of any kind? didn't we all learn our lessons with Testors glue making models as kids that plastic glues and cements are terrible?

I just use the cheapest superglue I can find, usually a pack of about 8 for 2 bucks. Works fine.
Plastic cement stuff is terrible to work with I find. If you want to melt plastic lighters also work pretty well lol.

Each to his own, i find Super glue terrible most of the time, its just not strong enough for my liking.

I personally use Tamiya "Ultra Thin", after going through three brands of plastic glue, I find it to preserve the most detail in respect to the model. The brush applicator for the glue to me is something I wished I had in the beginning. My first plastic glue I ever used did come from Games Workshop, and oh man, was I liberal in its application of it.
It would be interesting to see if the new plastic glue not only come in a new formula, but also to see it come in a new bottle/applicator. I always would've liked to start out my hobby with a needle-nozzle or a brush for my plastic glue. I guess we'll see what happens.

Prefer brush applicators myself, I find that needle applicators clog if they are metal and too thin.

I occasionally have that issue as well, but taking a lighter to the metal applicator for a moment solves it immediately.
