Way back in 2nd Ed. it was the Chaos Codex and the artwork therein. I never tossed out my Chaos figures such was my love for them, particularly the old Khorne Juggernaut and Bloodletter. My poor Abbadon has sat unpainted for nearly two decades now, perhaps in penance for the fact my friend shoplifted him for me back when we were young and mischievous.
My return a year or two ago was brought about by a creeping nostalgia, and likely influenced further by Dawn of War on the PC and the Black Library books I had started reading.
Now I have a large pile of boxes and clipped mini's waiting to be assembled (all acquired legitimately I might add!).

My current army was definately the combination of the new (at the time) valkyrie and watching starship troopers slightly tipsy ( ok smashed but hey)

My marines are modeled after pre heresy legions of death guard, Luna wolves, and salamanders. The heresy and the turning of half the space marine legions is what got me hooked again.

My grey knights are going to be modeled and painted as thousand sons thanks to the book thousand sons making me fall into a serious mancrush on the sons of prospero.

And my necrons are just necrons, no fancy paint job just glowing orbs and guns and gun metal.
