Chaos Marines.

I wanted to start in 2nd. Friends told me to hold off as 3rd was coming in a month.

Waited... took a look at the Chaos codex... saw the artwork for the Obliterators (the one of the Iron Warrior with the cannon sticking out of his chest) and became smitten.

I played with a strange mix of Chaos and Marine bitz (Chaos didn't have plastics in those days... except boxes of 5 Plague marines or Bezerkers).

First 40k model was Kharn. Oddly enough he's still kicking around in the bitz bucket somewhere.

No head... Probly offered it up to Khorne after all those years of boredom.

Mine was DE in the early 3rd edition. Very satisfying.

My first army was Eldar, but that depends entirely on your definition of what counts as a first army.

Hm. By all of those definitions except two, Eldar were my first.

Those two exceptions being the last two possible definitions. I never won a game with my first Eldar army - or even with my subsequent Imperial Guard and Space Marine armies, hell, I even lost a game to someone who had like 500 points fewer models on the table than me, which suits me right for being a dick and wanting a win for once to the point of not taking stuff out of my list to make it a fair fight... - except maybe against my younger brother on one or both of those last two. And I consider my Sisters of Battle to be my primary army, and would have started them much much sooner if they weren't 20 dollars more expensive per 10 basic troopers at the time, and also if I hadn't been fearing ridicule for picking an army made up entirely of females.

And if you're wondering why I ever started them up given the price thing, well, I started up my Sisters army when the boxed sets still existed, and a box of Marines was only about 8-10 dollars cheaper. I picked up 5 Battle Sisters boxes (I know the exact number because I have 5 Superiors with Plasma Pistol/Chainsword, 5 Sisters with Storm Bolters, and 5 Sisters with Flamers), a Seraphim box, a Repentia box, and maybe even a couple of Immolator boxes before they went to direct order only.

The first squad I bought was a box of Eldar Guardians. Tried to paint them in Ulthwe colours and pose them in exciting and dynamic ways. The results were... Unpleasant.

My first army, though, by which I mean the first force I had a decent amount of and actually won a couple of games with, was Tau. I think they're sitting in a shoebox somewhere now.

Eldar, 97 or so I think.

We bought the 2nd edition starter set, I didn't like the orcs, my brother already took the marines..

Necrons, because I went shopping after watching the Terminator series. I was particularly happy when I found out (after I had got home and read the codex) that they really "would be back"!

Eldar in 2nd ed. I was encouraged to play them as no one else did and then I quickly fell in love. I still remember the day 12 year old me brought home my Falcon tank! I LOOOVED that thing. Still have it, though it doesn't get fielded as often.

My first 40k army was a Genestealer/Chaos cult force. Purestrain stealers, hybrids, cultists and beastmen. I then split off my khorne chaos marines. Sold off the genestealer cult minis a few years ago, but still have the khorne chaos marine army 23+ years later. Still has some of the original figures in it as well.

It was either robot zombies or the endless swarm of the nids. It ended up being the crons out the gate. I didn't wait more than a few months before I picked up my Nid army though.

I would like to note that nobody on this poll started with Chaos Daemons as their first army. I wonder why not.

Chaos demons didn't start till 4th ed, so a lot of the older players didn't have the choice to start as demons.

Ah, that makes sense. I was actually thinking about starting as chaos daemons when I was looking in 5th edition, but after talking to some people it seemed their playstyle was a little tricky, what with them all deep striking.

As generic as it is, Space Marines. I found 40k through the DoW video games and enjoyed the strategy that they could bring to a battle, and their flexibility, combined with strong armour across the army (and that AoBR had models for them) were all points where I went with them for. That, and I got the paint set (pre paint overhaul) that included Ultrasmurfs, so that's how I paint them as well

I do, however, want to start a 1k sons army.

Blood Angels.

I wanted to play Chaos, but my death metal friend would ONLY play them and I didn't want to double up.

I was all set to play Eldar and went to the store in order to buy them... but then I saw the Death Company, Dante, and Mephiston. I was sold.

Later on I sold my BA and bought Eldar though. The Avatar was just too awesome for my 13 year old mind.

Orks. I still love them and have my scratch built meganobs, and nothing is as fun to build and paint. But ...

Me; This codex is really limiting. I'm getting really tired of spamming lootas.

Internetz; Don't worry, there's a new one coming any year now, and Matt Ward's writing it!

Me; Does anyone want to trade some orks for the DV box??

They never won much, so they weren't real orks anyway.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

Chaos space marines - 2006.

I got my first taste for 40k from Dawn of War. Around the same time the Horus Heresy books started coming out. The ideas behind the Imperium always seemed silly to me, so I figured I would focus on burning it down.

I guess what I was looking for is the "first army fielded" as that was the army that you assembled together and said, "I will use these bad boys to defeat my opponents."

1st edition dark eldar in 5th edition because that was the book I got with my DE. Didn't help that at the time the only person in the (at the time) small group that was always available to play played plague marines. Strength 3 splinter weapons loved their toughness 5 w/ power armour and 4+ FNP (sarcasm full burst).

Still love them dark eldar though.
