Me, I look at my progress. Every mini I paint I attempt to do my best, to surpass the previous work, to try and experiment new things. I usually got a bit bummed when I saw fantastic looking miniatures and are called "Good Table Top" but now I can see why. It doesn't have those time-consuming techniques, the layerings, the NMN, the blending. Even a good weathering and paint chipping and OSL will make one heck of a difference. The bar is really way up nowadays and every time I see a CMON or not I almost drool with how good they are.

That's my main goal. Being able to paint awesome miniatures like I see in CMON and who knows, being paid while doing it.

I can paint to a decent table top standard. I have entered in a couple of painting competitions held by my gaming group but I have never received a single vote. It doesn't bother me though, my army looks good on the table and that's all I care about.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

It doesn't really matter, if you're one of the people in the world that finds it necessary to compare yourself to others, then you will always find someone better than you, because that's what you're looking for.

I've won best army contests at a GT level, and yet I'm still blown away by how much better some other people's stuff is.

Do what makes you happy. If you want to master a skill, do it for the sake of personal betterment, not trying to outdo the others.

Getting good at painting requires a lot of trial and error, and thus patience. There aren't too many naturals. Pick an army with models you love, research techniques, and execute them to the best of your ability. You will get better if you keep it up!

But what if it doesn't ? What if after painting for a year your whole army looks ugly and harder to sell . It would be a waste of money and time and all you would get is the knowladge that you will never paint as well as others do.

IMO the best way to force oneself to paint an army is to pick a big event which you want to win or at least get a high table spot that requires you to have a painted army . You won't have any other options then to pain the whole thing , because else you will waste the travel money , entery fee and chance to win stuff.

Look at it same as playing the game.... Do you win GTs? Or do you just play for fun? If you entered a GT and lost, would that put you off playing again? Its the same with painting, just accept that there will always be people who are ridiculously good at painting and just paint it to a level where you feel happy with them, and that over time you'll get a bit better.

I find it helps to have a clear idea of what you want the mini to look like when it's done.

I'm currently painting some Bloodletters, and my scheme involves a lot of highlighting and going over the edges of the muscles. It tends to look a bit weird and chaotic until the entire model's put together and finished off, at which point the effect really pays off. So it's good to keep in mind that even if your mini doesn't look good right now, it can always be improved and will likely be impressive in some way by the end.

I don't understand the division between playing tournaments and fun . Tournaments are fun , Painting is a chore you have to do . It suck , costs money, time and you need free space to do it . You have to do it of course sooner or later because all big tournaments are sponsored and shops want to sell paints and stuff for painting , so it is natural that they forced people to paint their armies . At gaming at least you can get better no matter what , You can learn openings and set ups against other armies , just like in chess . For painting on top of all the money stuff , you also need good manual skills else the models look crappy .

It takes time, money and free space to paint? I wonder what sort of other activities require those things

I find that with painting, you likewise get better no matter what. You may not have the best manual skills (I certainly don't), but there are techniques around that and learning those skills is part of the fun. I don't find it to be a chore at all.

If you don't like it, that IS unfortunate. Perhaps try getting a commission worker to do your army?

I am quite happy with my painting level at the moment. It isn't at a professional level, but I aim to take my time and keep it "clean".

Simple things that can improve everyone's painting quality:

- "stay within the lines" - you'd be surprised how many people rush and let shoulder pad paint get all over other parts of the arms/torso etc..
- water down your paint a little - too often you will see thick, uneven coats of paint that completely kill a models detail.

What also works (if you like the look) is weathering your models. An overly simple or even poor paint job can easily be masked by some washes, stippling, or weathering pigments.

I'm fairly meticulous at making sure lines look good. If I let it go it's because I'm fed up with a very small piece, and that is very rare. I normally will just stop painting if I get tired/impatient, as I know I'll regret it later.

Honestly though, I watched some youtube videos before starting painting the first time, had about 6 marines worth of practice material that were given to me primered black, and just painted from there. I tend to get complemented on my paint jobs from others in the area, especially when they learn my army is the first painting I've ever done. It's just patience, which my friends laugh at me for(they think I spend far to much time on a model when I do paint it to make it look how I want it). From there, I evaluate models after painting and decide what I want to do differently on the next set. As a result, my first assault squad marine looks much worse than my second assault squad, and my third is on track to look cleaner yet. The same happened as I painted vehicles, and with other marines. I can say that the GW painting book actually did help me too, and was free for me(birthday present).

So what do you think of the minis in the thin your paints video? Do they make you feel better about yourself?

Bahaha, yeah, many of the pro painted minis most definitely are NOT pro painted... I saw one yesterday with paint chipped all over the place and an unclean job in general...on a Callidus Assassin. Black undercoats make your white hair chipping quite noticeable...

And nah Kain, that video just made me laugh. I know where I got to hasty and let my paints clump on a couple things, and I fixed the habit allowing it once I saw what was happening.

Thats like buying an army or expanding to 2k points. I am not rich enough for that,

Imagine someone buys a car which is striped of paint. It is grey metalic. Another dude takes a few buckets of paint and splashes it for "cool" flame effects . I don't think the second guy has something that could be called good.

I'm not saying that playing in a tournament isn't fun, I'm just saying that if you play in a tournament and don't do as well as everyone else, does it mean you don't enjoy yourself? But to do bad at a tournament I would have to be a bad player . I did watch some guides how to paint , they are all about people with huge space to paint , air brushs , tons of paints and washes from different firms . Sure I get it If you do someone for 8 hours a day and spend 700$+ on gear your painting would be better .
