I hope Awesome Enterprises reaches out to industry contacts on this issue and maybe they can find a way to manage the price. I guess they are ultimately hamstrung by their actual current budget and slow progress on the KS.
We're working on this now, though the postage even within the EU can be pricy: shipping Shuriken from Spain (the location of one fulfillment place we're looking at) to the UK is nearly $40, not counting what we have to pay to have someone pack & ship for us. In the end, though, I suspect it's going to be an economy of scale thing, since the most expensive part is paying for a boat to the EU. To ship 100 games from the printer to a warehouse in the EU is about $1,200 (not counting customs and import fees). Shipping 200 games is $1,500. So as the quantity goes up, the price per unit drops drastically -- but we have to do it in a way that ensures we can still get backers their games even if only 20 people from the EU actually back. Of course this is assuming we can manage to get significantly cheaper EU shipping in the first place (the place in Spain, for example, ended up being *more* expensive at 100 units than shipping from the US).

So, did this Kickstarter just stall out? What happened to it?
Automatically Appended Next Post: The campaign runners just announced that Shuriken will never sell through retail channels. If the game funds successfully, it will be exclusive to Kickstarter and to conventions, with any extras sold directly through their website. Sounds kind of drastic.

Completely stalled out. IMO the big issue is presentation - without this thread, I never even would have looked at the kickstarter. Once I clicked on it, I was sold, but the basic logo really didn't catch my eye. If it showed the logo with a bunch of plastic ninjas in front of it, I think the value proposition is a little more on the nose.
It also seems like it came about when people were having issues with other kickstarters (with the non-delivery of a $150k boardgame being fresh on people's minds), which led to a lot of "wait and buy later" thinking.
The not selling through retail channels is crazy though, and smacks of desperation. They should probably cancel the Kickstarter, rethink and refine their kickstarter, then relaunch it.

Shame too, because it looks like something I could get on the table.
USPS shipping prices are quite unpleasant these days when dealing with overseas customers, and I'm sure that's a big turnoff for a lot of people.
Plus like decker said, this is just an off time to be running a kickstarter it seems. We had so many big one early this year, maybe everyone is just wiped out money-wise or just fatigued from the constant parade of new shiny.
Even I've reached a bit of a saturation point and I'm constantly backing stuff.

Mmmm, Sweet delicious bulk ninjas. Only $25 for your own Ninja army.
Wait, does the Bag O Ninja include all 4 types of ninja? Or 100 copies of one pose?

It was canceled three hours ago ... With Shuriken raising just over $30k at 30 days in and with 15 days to go, it is clear that the project will not be funded, and so we are regretfully pulling the plug on the Kickstarter today.
It's been a heck of a ride, we've learned a lot and tried to correct and adjust for backer needs on the fly, but even making the whole project Kickstarter exclusive gave us only a small spike in backers. In the end I suspect that to actually raise all the funds for a big box game requires a large pre-existing audience, and preferably a funding goal much lower than the cost of producing the Kickstarter.
We are not sure right now what the future of Shuriken is going to be. If we had come closer to our goal, re-launching a revised campaign would look more attractive. We could add more KS exclusive components, but that of course increases the funding goal, and we could indeed cut tens of thousands out of the goal by stripping the quality of components down to the bare essentials -- but that goal would still be substantially larger than what we've managed to raise, and we'd by trying to do it with a lower-quality production. We're not ruling out the possibility of a re-launch, but right now the expense is not looking like something that makes good business sense for Awesome Enterprise.
There is certainly the possibility of an existing publisher stepping forward to pick up the game and running the kind of Kickstarter that gamers are used to -- very low funding goals and oodles of KS exclusives -- and that's another option that we as designers can pursue; however, those doors can be very hard to break into. In particular we wouldn't want to work with any company without a successful track record, and those guys make more money doing their own games or using designers with a built-in audience.
For the time being we're going to relax and recover a bit, and if we have any future news about Shuriken, we'll be sure to keep you guys updated here.
And a big and very sincere thank you to everyone who backed the Kickstarter -- we're sorry we let you down, and we greatly appreciate every moment of your support.

Honestly, I think they should have focused more on selling those bags of Ninja. What gaming/comics/spencers/newberry's shop wouldn't carry them and sell them like hotcakes ?

That actually might not be a bad idea, selling the bags of ninjas. Just like Twilight Creations does with their Zombies!!!
Oh the things you could do with a plethora of ninjas....
