This, a thousand times this.
It even dissolves some kinds of superglue, so for example I had a tank that I but together completely wrong like an idiot, and the totally awesome dissolved the glue so I could start over, but didn't hurt the resin or metal one bit.
It's some really amazing stuff. It says it's a "degreaser' if that helps.

If the other stories haven't helped you feel better, then this one will FOR SURE!
The guys wife wants her ring cleaned. They put it in a cleaning solution in the window of the kitchen and leave it there all day. At the end of the day they dump out the jar into the sink...NO RING! Turns out that the cleaner they used reacts with gold. So, when they tore the sink apart all that they found was the diamond. The ring itself had been completely dissolved.
I totally forget what the cleaner was, but if I can find it I'll post it here. In the meantime, check with a jeweler before you use something not labeled for use with jewelry to clean it!

Well my friend, if I recall my college chemistry courses, I seem to remember one solvent that dissolves gold rather well. Chlorine bleach. That story is most likely true, since gold will dissolve into the bleach yet a diamond won't.

That's got to be it. I wanted to say that it started with a "C" but Clorox was all that I could come up with off hand, and knew that wasn't it. Thanks for filling in the mystery cleaning agent!

The trick with acetone free stuff is to only dip it in for a minute or two, scrub with a toothbrush under warm water, rinse, repeat. I know that doesn't help you with the horrors, but in the future it is a usable piece of knowledge. To help with your sadness though, I once left two land raiders and a drop pod on my car dash in the middle of summer. Was out for an hour, but it was enough to make them only fit for Ork-Looted vehicles. After the first one got pitched front first into a wall in a fit of rage, that is.
