Depends on what you put in the top since it's mostly empty space... I like the water-resistant material.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

I've taken to a rolling luggage bag and blufoam pluck for my Trollbloods. Holds about 20" of foam without a problem. Need a wheeled solution and works far better than a Battlefoam bag.

DIY all the way. Here's the thread for a 20 buck hard-sided transport solution That will hold as much as a $60 purpose built case, but even more safely! You've got to do a bit of DIY, but once you've done the first one, the rest follow quickly.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/362407.page
I now use modified Plano Protector 4 pistol cases (also sold as "accessory cases") for nearly all my miniatures.
One other thing I'm recently doing is get used sabol trays put new foam (either custom cut by me or bulk pluck foam) in them and put them in bags/cases that I find at resale shops. Old VHS camera cases and scrapbooking cases are cheap (resale shops usually charge about $5 a bag/case), sturdy, and often the right size. I'll be making a blog post about two of these that I am working on in a month or so.

This is an excellent suggestion as well! The dimensions suggest that you could either make your own foam trays for the top or put sabol trays in it, maybe with a rulebook also to fill the extra inch or so on the side.

Battlefoam. Bought my warmachine bag and haven't looked back.
Their black Friday sale is coming up next week. Deliveries take a while but can definitely take the sting out of the price.

Black Friday sale will incur a definite delay in custom-cut as their production seems to get backed up pretty heavily. OTOH, you can order during the sale, and wait until you've got your tray layouts done before submitting them, and still get the sale pricing.
I'm a little annoyed as the tray creator has some definite 'issues' and BF is not thrilled with my illustrator-format sketches. They add new shapes for top-tier games pretty regularly, but Dystopian Wars stuff seems to take forever, and has mistakes where canon model assemblies don't fit. They do good work, though, once things are worked out.

What about something inexpensive and easy to store a relatively small amount of figures say 20 to 30?
My kids would like a storage case so that each of them could put their bones figures in.

Battlefoam and KR both make mini-cases. The KR version is the Aquila, and comes in two sizes - the Aquila 1 would take between 15 and 30 models depending on which sort of core foam tray you choose, and the Aquila 2 would take between 30 and 60 depending on foam.

I'd go with feldherr mini or mini plus cases; can't beat them for the price in that category. KR's aquila (I believe) is nice, but only the "4" variant with belt etc. is really worth its price, and that's not exatly a small or cheap case for 20 to 30 models anymore.

Buy a small pistol case. They have two sheets of eggshell and will keep your minis safe. Several guys in my club have them and use them for storage of individual warbands for Song of Blades and Heroes. Reaper actually sells a pistol case with a big reaper sticker for about twice the price.
a Two-pistol case like this will hold around 20 figs or more, costs about 10 bucks and is available at just about any gunshop, outdoor store, and even most walmarts that aren't near a major city.

For more than 30 figures, the Plano Protector case I mentioned above is a great option avaialble for between 15 and 20 bucks. Some guys use them unmodified as they come with 3 layers of foam.

I guess this is relevant here but I'm looking for custom foam trays in 15.5x11.5x2.5(or3"). Battlefoam sells 15.5x12 but they're a 1/2" too big on the 11.5 dimension. Anybody have any suggestions or am I going to be relegated to pluck foam?

I dunno, I now have Aquilas 1 2 and 4. The 1 doesn't need a shoulder strap as it's small enough to fit in any small bag. The 2 you're probably right on, it doesn't seem to have much of a purpose now that the 3 or 4 don't do better for a bit extra money (when I got my 2 it was the only Aquila). The 3 is just like the 4 but suited for different bases (a single 1/3 height tray rather than 2 x 1/4 or 1 x 1/2), so if that's the size you need then the 3 is better than the 4. Plus of course that all of them use the same dimensions as the larger cases, so you get the ability to upgrade at a later date if your collection expands.
I'll be honest, for the amount of stuff I have, no other solution other than KR would work for me. Different people's collelctions may require different solutions though - I don't think it's enough to go ont o a forum and say "what's the best" as everyone is looking for different things.

For the price of a 1, you just get more with feldherr IMO.
Also, feldherr turns out about as expensive as (if not cheaper than) KR in large amounts.

Aquila 1 with a core half tray = £14.49 (free p&p). Your choice of 6 variants of tray with 18, 20 or 25 compartments or a choice of 3 variants of 'pick and pluck'. Spend 1 pound more to choose from any of the half size 'custom' designs from any range.
Feldherr Mini Minus with 1 foam tray = £14.56 (£10.78 p&p unless you spend over €60*). You choice of 12, 16, 18 or 20 compartments, or 1 design of 'pick and pluck'. There also seems to be 4 custom designs that can be selected for no extra cost.
To be honest there doesn't seem to be anything in it from the numbers alone. My own persepective is skewed towards the KR as the modularity allows me to swap the tray of the small case in and out of larger cases (I use this with Hell Dorado - my full collection sits in a full case with my preferred warband having a half tray to themselves so I can just take them out without having to touch anything else).
*Depends on location, obviously but this is what they quote me as a UK buyer.

Here's the thing about Battlefoam. NEVER PRE-ORDER. I did one time and it took about three or four months for my bag to arrive. Only order stuff they are actually offering for sale.

I like my sabol foam bags, I am looking at KR multicase for my next army though.
I will say the 1 time I had issues with a Sabol Designs bag I emailed them and had a replacement bag in 4 days. No questions no hassles no taking it to a shoe repair shop aka battlefoam just a new bag in the mail.

that may not be such a good idea depending on where you live. It has the potential to cuase issues with local law enforcement as well as local citizens of a more high strung nature.

Carrying a black plastic case has potential to cause issues? Come on give me a break even in Cali and MA the 2 strictest gun law states in America those cases wouldn't cause any issue whatsoever.

I wouldn't worry about it for a few reasons.
1 )1 and 2 gun pistol cases are small enough to fit in any bag bigger than a small purse. I never carry my pistol cases out as it makes more sense to put them in the bag with rules, dice, etc.
2) Reaper already sells a pistol case with a sticker on it as a miniatures case. A truely worried person can always put a sticker on it.
3) Large 4 pistol cases like the Plano Protector look just like hardshell cases used for transporting cameras, audio gear, etc.
The only time you might want to watch out is if the case has a gun company's name on it (Though I still use a few of these) or if it's a rifle case since rifle case dimensions are pretty hard to mistake for anything but a rifle case.

I'd love to take the pistol case approach. Thing is, in Sweden you can only get those things from proper gun stores, and they'll set you back like a hundred dollars.
I have a GW voucher that I might use on a Citadel Case. I understand they're not worth it at the price, but there's nothing else on the site that I want. The big "double" army case would cost me like 15 dollars. And for 15 dollars I would guess they're well worth the money. I'm still not sure though.
Otherwise the local hardware supermarket sells these really cool aluminium cases pretty cheap. They're empty though, so I'd have to buy the foam separately.
