Bitter grapes?
This Godzilla is like the original 1954 where its going to be a scathing criticism, don't expect a lot of Uncle Sam and apple pie. The first Gojira was a fable about the horrors of the atomic bomb. This one will be like that though I'm not sure exactly what they'll do with it because they're keeping it under wraps. But the director's first movie "Monsters" was heavy in political and social meanings and that was why the big studio chose him.

That... (meaning the children's book)... is unbelieveably cool!

Uh, on the other hand, the '54 movie was more a scathing criticism about ... well, not Japan. It was more critical of Japan's heretofore enemy and by the end of the film Godzilla himself becomes the hero and something of a symbol for postwar Japan's self-understanding. If the 2014 movie is something like that for the USA, then expect it to justify things like preventative war and drone strikes. And I suppose Godzilla will somehow arise from terrorism?

Is it possible that this still takes place in Japan, perhaps in proximity to a US base?

The city in the trailer looks to be San Francisco.

Nice catch, I just realized The Hottest Olsen is standing in front of a BART station and ohmygod did you guys see all the bodies on the beach at 1:36? Crossing my heart for a R rating after all, even though PG-13 has been so watered down over the years. I don't believe any previous Godzilla film actually showed personal specific human carnage like that, just implied it.

Hah! I've read that to my son, and the sequel, Who's Afraid of Godzilla. They are both adorable books and he loves them. There's also the Godzilla on Monster Island picture book, but it's a bit too violent for us. (My son was upset when Gigan hurt one of the other monsters. But he still talks about Kumonga and Kamakuras, so it's not all bad.)

They're thinking of doing a sequel, and most Godzillas shrug off miniature black holes. The weakest version took on all the avengers, shield, the fantastic four, and the military and wiped the floor with them. Hell, Spacegodzilla was born from a supermassive black hole, and Godzilla wipes the floor with him. If the us military wins something Is wrong......

If they do it to where him and some other big monster beat the crap out of each other, count me in. If it's just godzilla vs the military, yeah I won't even give it a passing glance. Funny considering I liked godzilla 2000, probably because the design.

But yeah, so far, it's no pacific rim.

I'm gonna stay optimistic about this. I like my Godzilla as a man in a suit trashing model cities rather then a cgi'd monster, but the animation does look good so I can deal with it. I'll happily swing either way when it comes to who he fights. Doesn't matter if it's monsters, military or aliens. As long as something gets the snot kicked out of it I'm good.

Which monster are you hoping they'll bring back?

Hard to say. With the serious nature of this particular film, lots of standard Godzilla foes would be pretty campy. Especially the ones like Jet-Jaguar, or the Smog Monster, lol.

I wonder if this one will be just pure Godzilla versus "everything he can step on".

Interesting seeing the sequence in the trailer where they are cracking open some sort of lab with guys in biohazard suits, and then the big exit hole to the sky. Maybe in this one Godzilla is some sort of experiment gone awry?

I am hoping for Rodan and Anguirus but I doubt either will show. Ghidorah would be better in a sequel. In any case, it looks like they are cooking up their own new monstrous antagonist, something called M.U.T.O.

It isn't as if they made it with a guy in a rubber suit because they thought it would be campy and fun; they're really weren't any other options when it was made except for stop motion animation, which I imagine would have been more time consuming. I imagine if Toho had the choice when making [the original film], and the funding, they would have made Godzilla like this as well.

I think that's almost certainly true. The tone of the '54 film ranges from somber to elegiac. It's a quite serious movie by its own account.

I would recommend to anyone with a Bluray player to pick up the Criterion Collection Bluray version of the original film. It is an amazing transfer and clean up, and easily the best I've seen of the film.

Indeed manchu. There is nothing child oriented or campy about that film, just the limitations of the budget it was presented with.

The reporter character imbued a bit of early WWII style to it, reporting on the attack blow by blow. The hero has a massive suicidal streak and ends up dying.

I particularly like the scenes of the village. Its like being in a natural disaster. Something is out there, and its coming.

The connection between the monster and the typhoon in the original film is no coincidence. "Unstoppable force of nature" so-to-speak.

Thinking more on this one, I suppose there's something to be said for suitmation, too. The costume made for a torturous acting challenge and I think you can see that on the screen. Some terrible pain evident in Godzilla's labored movement seems to drive his rage. Every movement is intense with struggle, contributing to the monster's ultimate pathos. The performance has a unique gravity.

And of course suitmation grew into its own trope, characteristic of the kaiju genre. Perhaps this helps to explain the utter failure of the 1998 American Godzilla design. From what we've seen of the 2014 American Godzilla, there's greater fidelity to the more established look. It's not hard to imagine late 2014, watching bluray special features about computer animators trying to bring in a little of the "man in the suit" feeling to their Godzilla's movement.

I agree, and I wasn't trying to wholly disparage the use of the suit, just disagreeing that it is the only way it can be done. The early film did some great work with it, and some of the later films also used them to great effect as well.
