I do seem to remember previous updates and changes to the GW site have taken place on a Sunday. I suspect that's all this is.

Pretty badly down if they can't show people a "Site closed for maintenance" page.
It looks more like something has gone wrong.

Yeah, given how long it's been down for, suggests that something has gone wrong. The FW and BL sites are still up, as is the careers.games-workshop.com page. Though BL and FW look to be on the same server, with the sections of the GW site being on different servers.
If this was planned, then I'd have expected a holding page up, even if they're moving to an entirely new site on new servers. If it's unplanned then their engineer(s) need to get their finger out.
