Why not? because it's a good idea. This is something we're genuinely not used to from GW. This isn't disappoint, disapproval or dismay, it's shock.

This is, sadly, so true.

I'm still blown away at the idea of GW giving something away for free to gain good will...

"All GW will gain is my increased contempt for their business practices." - AesSedai
"Its terrible the way that conversion kit is causing him to buy 2 GW kits... " - Mad4Minis
"GW are hard to parody, as they are sometimes so stupid that the best in comedy couldn't beat them at their own game..." - Paradigm

Your right. It's probably made of spiders or it's defective rejects or it's a carrier for some kind of alien plague or something.

With the risk of feeding fuel to the fire of conspiracy, it is possible that the reason GW are willing to give away free Space Marines is that the 3x pack just doesn't sell and it now costs more to store that inventory than it does to give them away. Of course I've no access to GW's sales data, this is pure bored speculation.

It could be that as well.

Or it could be spiders.

Or it simply doesn't cost them much to do it.

GW giving out free snap fits isn't that uncommon really. Perhaps it's a sad commentary that we get excited about it now. On 2 occasions in the 90s I remember the local GW giving away free models just for entering the store, once during a grand opening and another during a sale. One time I got a Chaos Warrior the other a Space Marine. Other times they've given free models for you to enter painting competitions. A couple of times one of the staff just opened the drawer and gave me a free model to test my paint schemes.

How the "free" in Free Comic Book Day works is that comic stores pay money for boxes of promotional comics and then give those comics away. I haven't heard anything about the publishing side, but I can't see any money from the printing escaping Diamond's pockets.

I imagine that there are several stores that are both comic stores and game stores. And both Diamond and GW are big enough companies to be willing to sell each other customer information. But I'm not convinced that those "free" GW models would be be any more "free" to the store than the comics are.

I can imagine the money they saved on payroll from switching to one man stores has led to this latest surge of GW generosity....

Woah, hold on... Games Workshop is giving stuff away for free???

I don't mean to simply jump on the bandwagon here, but after so many terribly worrisome moves on their part, it's almost unbelievable that they would pull an actual great move like this on their part.

But what exactly does this mean? Is Games Workshop finally coming around, with this being the first of many upcoming improvements and good moves on their part? Or is it a sign that their business is doing so terrible that they're forced to go as far as to giving away models for free in order to hopefully gain new customers?

What do you call a lasgun with a laser sight? Twin-linked.

I was super surprised when I started seeing this a lot at all the FCBD supporters, and it's a good thing! It's getting people interested. And probably raking in cash. FCBD gets lots of people interested in comics, so why not wargaming?

We got them at NEC in New Bedford, a lot more marine squads then we have players for. So we're going to be holding a contest for people to paint up the remaining squads, hopefully bring in some new faces.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

I was very happy to see them follow through with this. I had a discussion on FCBD with my sales rep a while back, and was really hoping they'd start backing it.
