The read on negativity is because you state things the way you do.
First you don't allow unbound so I it is not all 40k army lists. Just unrestricted battleforged. Which you could state plainly without mentioning ban lists at all. If I say this event allows low, all fortifications, and is unrestricted battleforged, I am telling you what we are doing instead of what others are doing that we are not.
Second funny FAQ, simply state that you will follow Gw printed rules and FAQ, with no event FAQ. No need for the word "funny" at all which was obviously a comment on the NoVA/ETC ruling as being "funny" and you disagreeing with it. Again no need for you to address what other events are doing. Just say what you are doing.
As for cheers? Where I've seen none on here, is it your local group? My concern has nothing about validating anything, I played in a 4 person tournament once declared best in The north east. The issue is that it simply makes claims that are untrue, so why bother. If I attended I would not care about the validity of the "championship" I would more question the ego of the one making the statement.
It's great you have a style of gt you want to celebrate....go do it. Just stop doing it with backhanded comments about other events.
Take DA boyz for example they run a comp event, they don't advertise "no uber broken lists" "If you hate serpent spam our event is for you". "Don't like top lists at other events come to us"
They post what they are doing, and do it.
I.e. I would advertise your event.
Mechanicon GT
1500 points (don't remember point level)
Unrestricted battle forged
All low allowed
All fortifications allowed.
FW allowed
We will be following all printed Gw rules and faqs.
Bring your creativity to the table and compete in a good old fashioned GT
Done, no need to say anything more.
You are a large event with history of putting on a good time. Why muck it up with silly comments, that serve no purpose but to potentially piss people off.

Breng77- thanks for your input. I am not a great writer and I know that these methods of communication are often misinterpreted.
As for targeting NOVA or ETC, they are not the only ones who create faq's. The last edition of INAT was a beast at over 100 pages long, cost a good bit to constantly keep printing it out in color (to use the full effect of changes), Feast of Blades currently have their own FAQs as well WITH a different take on the Serpent Shield (once again - this is the real source of "funny" , Da Boyz have their own FAQ and so do MANY other events. <<< you misinterpreted funny faqs as "obviously a comment on the NoVA/ ETC ruling" but it is far from the truth - it is a comment on ALL faqs and how confusing they are for many players who want to attend multiple events to have to adopt multiple rulings.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! Way to go Mechanicon! You rock! Woo-hoo!
People whom are pissed off by their comments would probably have more fun at a different event. If your idea of fun is to bring a tough as nails, no holds barred, slaughter your foes, and leave no survivors than this is not the event for you.
Their comments have a lot to do with managing expectations.

For the love of God... what makes you think those same types people wont be attending this event as well... thats what bugs me.. what part of this format claims to prevent bringing armies that wont beat to submission other players. That sir is a joke !
Every Tournament regardless of its format has its competitive players and its non competitive ones. Anyone who claims that there format will create some sort of " 40k love fest" is seriously kidding themselves

zedsdead, please re-read my post. I did not say players whom enjoy highly competitive game play won't attend. I said there are other events which cater more towards their play style. I've attended far to many GTs to know that where will always be a handful of highly competitive players in attendance.
Also, now that the Colonial has moved I'm going to need you to move the Battle for Salvation to late March, early April. That'll be great, Ok.

Yes really, when the ETC -European team championship...was essentially copied by an American tournament, naming it ATC seems to make sense to me. Maybe it doesn't to you. Which I suppose is fine, but there is a large difference between an event fashioning itself after another event, and naming similarly (etc/ ATC), than random gts claiming to be championships of entire continents. The ATC/ ETC naming, is more akin to the use of the GT label than anything else, and the ATC is a one of a kind event in the country as far as the format goes.
Never said team championship means same format, I said the event was named that because it shared the format. If you don't see the similarity in 2 events with the same format sharing a similar name I don't know what else to say. (The Events are both typically referred to by 3 letters). Agree many events have faqs, but when certain events have been "in the news" recently for their FAQ rulings, it leads to certain assumptions. As for the FAQs being confusing, that depends, on how you let players know how grey areas will be handled.

Where did Colonial move to or when ?
Also what im saying is I don't know many Tournaments that cater to "no holds barred" types of game play. Lets use NOVA Open as an example. There 40K GT has multiple brackets giving awards to lower win ratio winners, RenMan - 50/50 BP/Paint among other non competitive awards. I think the only Tourny I would consider being built around win at all costs is there Invite GT

Recapping on the ride home. Great event. Well run and proffesional. Prizes were rather good too. The time schedule was kept and they wrapped it up quick too. Thanks to Tony and all the other folks who were involved in running a fun time for everyone.
For my part I ended up in the middle winning early and losing late... Played some really fun games.
The only two things I personally didn't like was the maelstrom mission and the hard floors there but overall I'd definitely return.
Thanks again for the memories.

Alright all, that was a weekend! I went 4-1, I'm actually not sure where I ended up placing but results are supposed to be posted tomorrow. I'm going to do a detailed write up for each mission, but for now heres some thoughts.
First of all, the event is awesome. Everything ran absolutely smooth and the people there were all really laid back, nice people who made me laugh all weekend. Price support was TREMENDOUS, there was a lot of loot for everyone. There was a raffle for Lymphoma research that had tons of things including a Warlord Titan, FW stuff and a Riptide + three tables worth of other prizes.
For an event that was 1850 Dual CAD, it seemed to be highly self regulated: There were hardly any of the traditional net lists. The mind blowing thing? No eldar. I dont mean they were scarce, I mean there was not a single Eldar presence at all. A Pacific Rim list was there that did not do too well (I believe it went 2-3) and the tourny was one by a very balanced Tau army. I faced an Adamantium Lance with SM allies, but there were also Ork Hordes and Space Wolf en masse. Daemons were present in very high numbers and did very well. I was one of two Tyranid players, the other had a very traditional two flyrant list with a Dimachaeron.
Superheavy's were allowed along with D weapons, but they played out nicely for the most part. The missions were all by the book, and this is the one area that was probably a common complaint. One was straight up maelstrom, but only one card drawn each turn with one in hand maximum. So if you got something you couldnt score or was worth only 1 point, it was very hard to play anything tactical beyond luck of the draw. This was a common complaint and Im sure they will change it for next year. Another mission was kill point only: So if you went against Pacific rim, good look getting your points for the overall tournament. That said, this event had a vibe of fun first, score second. Paintingjob and display had a huge impact on your overall score, sportsmanship was huge, there was even a quiz as part of it that I as a complete non fan of the fluff
failed miserably. So with these elements in mind, I think Mechanicon is a unique experience that seems to self purify itself from the cut throat experience of other tournaments. This is great or unappealing depending on what you're going for as a player. I for one cant recommend it enough, I had a great time.
To cap it off, all of my opponents genuinely were great guys. Zero rules lawyering, they made me laugh, got me less sober, and had a great attitude. What more can you ask for?

Wait so it was a completely unrestricted CAD or just had to be battleforged?

I think battleforged was the only restriction. Looked like a blast , even though my friend and I just did the side events and didn't play in the GT this time (although I'll admit the unrestricted nature of it seemed intimidating on paper).

The Army list restrictions were only that it had to be battleforged. All LOW allowed, FW approved allowed (I brought a Dimacheron with my Tyranids). As far as the LOW selections go, there was a Stompa, a Kill Bursta Tank and some Guard tank with a giant Torrent Flamer (not sure what the name is) There were a few AdLance formations, 2 that I know of for sure. 1 with Marines and the other had 2 Riptides and a few crisis suits along with the Knights. Most of the Armies there where themed armies that were well painted and brought you back to the days of the Baltimore GT where you walked around commenting on how cool an army looked rather than what kind of ridiculous combo someone came up with or how many of that "overpowered" unit the army had. There was really only 3 or 4 Armies that were going the WAAC route. Everyone pretty much policed their own list making, and I would go so far as to say 70% of the people there aren't even interested in that kind of gaming. I played the army that won Overall, the list was: GK Nemesis Strike Force: Librarian w/ Book and Hammer Minimum Terminator Unit 2 Units of 10 Purifiers Dreadknight with Hammer Allied Detachment of Ultramarines: Tiggy Sniper Scouts 3 Grav Centurions Space Wolves CAD: Rune Priest 2 units of blood claws 2 FA Drop Pods Fortification: Imperial Bunker w/ Escape Hatch So, the Purifiers went in the Pods, The Cent Star went in the Bunker with the hatch 12" up field. Libby and Terminators deepstruck. Turn 1, The terminators, 1 Pod Unit of purifiers Deepstrike (and combat squads), the Cent Star pops out of the hatch, moving 6' from where the hatch was placed. TLDR version of the battle - I managed to stave of a tabling until turn 3, where my only remaining model (Hive Tyrant) Smashed his Librarian in a challenge to give me my solitary point in the game (Slay the Warlord). I am not a competitive 40k player, I play the game with solid lists that can win games, but I don't look to pull the shenanigans that I was faced with in that game. My idea of a great 40k game is when there's been a ton of assaults, and one army is left standing with a few models left to take whatever objectives might be out there. In my opinion, Tony and the Mechanicon crew did the right thing in running it by the book for the first 7th event they were hosting, and everyone (players and TOs) learned a lot about it. I am sure there will be some restrictions next year, and even if there aren't i wont think twice. I'll be there. I have been to them all since they started in West Chester and I look forward to it every year. Hell I even won a Warhound Titan in the raffle. Always a great time at Mechanicon, and I echo everyone else in saying I can't recommend it enough to people. Hopefully attendance goes up next year, these guys deserve it. They run it right, everyone boozes up and has a good time.

That's awesome, Ztryder, and wow a Warhound in the raffle . I really wish we could have stayed for that, but even just playing in the X-wing events, my friend and I both went home with a new ship from the prizes (Defender and Phantom)
So, I totally concur that it was a great event! That winning list, however... ugh. I think we need a term for this kind of thing - "kaleidoscope marines" or "patchwork marines" maybe? Of course, it could be true of any army now. I just still can't imagine what GW was thinking - there's no narrative to be forged there at all
But from walking around, I agree that most folks were self-policing, it's just hard to do that in a tournament because everyone knows that there is a subset of players who won't (and shouldn't, necessarily, assuming they want to win it!).
Cheers for the writeup!
