Being an Ork hoard player, I love playing at anything 1850 and up. I don't mind games that take a few hours, since the time often flies by. For me at least! My opponents usually love it too, because who doesn't love blowing large amounts of bodies off the board? You can't do that with many other armies, so my army fills that void for everyone, and I love it. Not many Nid players who come by for casual games, typically only Apoc games.

But if I want a nice controlled game, I like anything below 1300 points for a quick, but fun match.

1250 & 1500 most of the times. I can't remember when I last played something at 2000 or above.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

1500 if I'm playing with people who don't have enough models for a 1850 army, but other than that I'll aim for 1850 with people. I find that's the perfect amount for me to take as much as I feel is suitable for an enjoyable game. That said, sometimes a 400 point each skirmish can be pretty fun.

1000 points at the most. I have other things to do with my day.

I've played mostly 750-1500 this past year. Its nice on a 6X4 or even a 4x4 table. I do like larger games of >2000 points, if both armies have highly elite and has a low model count.

In general, no more than some 750 points. Perhaps 1000 points, but even that's stretching it. And I'm not just talking about money, it's also the board. At 1000 points I feel that a standard 6' x 4' board with moderate terrain becomes seriously crowded.

At lower point values (like Kill Team or Combat Patrol) I might drop down to a 4' x 4' table. But honestly, even at a 400 points Combat Patrol, I'm feeling the need to use a regular table to open things up a bit and give the models some space to move around.

You know, I'd like to see a 1500 or 1850 point game played on a more appropriately-sized table once. You know, like a 6 x 8, or something.

Out of curiosity what makes a 6 x 8 an appropriate sized table for a mid-sized game? It seems to me that using a larger sized table would just give the longer ranged and faster moving armies more of an advantage, perhaps I'm missing something?

That you would suggest a 6' x 8' table as appropriate does, I think, speak volumes about the insane size the game is currently at.

Lower is better. A 4x6 table is small enough to start seriously limiting options after 1,000 points. By the time you get to 1,500, it's just a matter of lining up your minis and seeing who rolls better.

Unless you play on an escalatingly larger table, that is.

I've played many a game at 1500+ points levels (usually in leagues that push towards higher points games), and yeah, there really isn't much space to maneuver. It's one of many things that makes gunlines better - there's just no way to avoid them in such a small space.

It also makes a mockery of tactics when you're playing a horde army as well. An 1500 point guard army could easily have 180 models on the table, and that's with giving everybody a lascannon who can take one and plenty of melta. Assuming each model took up 4 square inches (the model taking up 1, and then a roughly .5" bubble around them - that's 1" coherency, which is pretty much packing them in there), that's 720 square inches of models in a deployment zone that's only 864 square inches large. That's 84% of your deployment zone just packed in with dudes at pretty close displacement. That's way, way too small. I mean, tell me that deployment decisions really matter when you've got to fill the whole thing just to get them all on the table.

And, of course, it's not just deployment, but moving as well. If the whole board is basically a traffic jam and you don't need to move that far to get things in range, then why spend much focus on the movement phase? It doesn't really help you that much, and you might wind up just getting snagged in terrain, so you might as well just gunline it.

Yes, playing on a larger table would give longer-ranged weapons an advantage, but it would give much more of an advantage to faster armies and special deployment, and makes terrain MUCH more important, rather than just a nuisance that gives certain models a cover save.

It's possible to make 4 x 6 work with over 1000 points, like if you had a draigowing up against abaddon with chosen in land raiders, but it quickly gets out of control when you have armies that rely on lots of 50-100 point units. You've just got to play it on a bigger table for a bunch of game mechanics to preserve their meaningfulness as points scale up.

It depends on my mood to be honest. Sometimes I fancy a 500 points game, sometimes I fancy a 5,000 points game. Usually it's somewhere in between though.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I enjoy 1250 games. I feel at this point value the games don't get out of hand with models and time it takes to play. It's also fun more ttactical imo since mistakes cost more since you don't have extra back up units.

I tend to really like 1500 points myself.

There is one sweet spot around 750-1000 where it becomes a good sized scirmish while the players still have some options as to what to bring. The second one is 2500-3000 where the players get to field a proper army while still being slightly limited in what to take. 3000 is also about the limit of what can reasonably be deployed inside a deployment zone without forcing stuff into reserves or placing units to make space instead of tactically.

I like 1500-3000 points. Any smaller and I don't feel like I'm commanding much of an army. Any more than 3000 and the game takes forever, plus when you lose a unit it's no big deal as you have 15 more to take their place.

1000 points if I'm running Orks
2000 points if I'm running Space Marines

Although I do like running 2000 points of Orks too. So I suppose 2000 is my favorite if I have the time for it.

But running 1k orks is so much fun, because I usually greatly outnumber my opponent and end up doing very well. 1k space marines just seems to brutal for me, especially since I like to run Terminators or Honor Guard and an HQ that costs over 200+ pts.
