I don't see there being any point in worrying about being the original or the replica. You can really only be truly aware of yourself anyway.
At that point, the only reasonable thing to do is to go out in the most spiteful and malicious way possible towards anything that could potentially become the basilisk, because feth that guy.

Well, other corollary I got out of it is that:
- If you're not suffering in your present existence, then you're doing something to cause the creation of the AI, whether you realize it or not.
- If you are suffering, then there is no hope unless you go about creating the AI.

Hence, you're screwed if you even hear about this.

Nope. Making a copy of me in the future is not punishing me now. The though experiment posits that the AI can punish people now. The future is not now. Now is now. Without time travel, this hypothetical AI is no threat to me, so I don't care about it or what it does.

No, read the article again: This thought experiment doesn't say anything about time travel, but that you might be punished at some future point in time, which might be tomorrow instead of the far future, because you might already be the copy of the real you that died a hundred years ago and everything you have experienced in your life so far is just a Matrix-style simulation.

You only find this thought non-threatening because you're reasonable and sane.

You're only screwed if the creation of the AI is already having been going to happen.

There's no way to know it hasn't been.

I see this as sort of an extension of the prisoner's dilemna, in a way. If even one person subscribed to the concept and brings about an AI capable of being the Basilisk, it would come true and everyone else would suffer. If EVERYONE brought about the AI, there would be no suffering, and if no one brought about the AI, in theory, there would be no suffering, because the AI wouldn't exist.

This is also assuming that the AI will not come into being without direct human cause. If we allow for the notion that a sufficiently advanced and powerful AI will one day occur as technology progresses (a theory the Singularity weirdos hold inevitable) then we would just have to take a stab in the dark on what could cause an AI to become malevolent. It could be that we could create this without the direct intention of doing so and then everyone suffers because of it.

Roko did offer to explain how the going back in time thing would work. I'd be interested in hearing it, in his words. It's a shame that the original post is deleted.

Right, which is why there's no point worrying about it.

If it's already happened, thinking about it or not thinking about it won't affect it, stop it, or bring it about. If it hasn't, then it doesn't affect US.

It's only scary if you let it scare you because it doesn't matter either way. And even then, it requires such a deterministic world view that you should be that scared about everything you think might come to pass. Seriously, it's not just suspension of disbelief, you also have to cast out the very concept of free will as non-existant.

In which case, don't worry about it, it doesn't matter what you think about or don't think about. In fact, you can't even decide what you're going to think about.

A life filled with problems seems to indicate that you've not been helping the AI come into existence.

Apparently not. And from what I can tell, there are *very few* people helping the ol' AI.

Kelly Clarkson is undoubtedly helping the AI, because there's no other way to explain that.

An AI created by Kelly Clarckson is not something anyone has reason to fear.

No, you see by not choosing you are not helping the AI come into being and therefore the AI will torment you now and for eternity.

Interesting article. Was really hoping it would be about Basilisk Hack style Shock Impact Fractals, but this was even better (for those that don't know, a Shock Impact Fractal is a hypothetical image that, for lack of a better term, "crashes the human brain" by taking advantage of the visual processing that our brains do on the signals we get from our eyes).

And the sad part is that I completely understand the dilemma, I just don't care. I swear it's a shame that there's people like that out there that give Transhumanists a bad name. I doubt I will ever go to the site where this was invented now. I have a strong inclination that whatever goes on there will react quite violently with real thought.

I'll leave you with this: What if this AI already exists, and it's simulating everyone on Dakka besides you...

Believing in Roko’s Basilisk may simply be a “referendum on autism,” as a friend put it.

Direct quote

"So, do please come along when we're promoting something new and need photos for the facebook page or to send to our regional manager, do please engage in our gaming when we're pushing something specific hard and need to get the little kiddies drifting past to want to come in an see what all the fuss is about. But otherwise, stay the feth out, you smelly, antisocial bastards, because we're scared you are going to say something that goes against our mantra of absolute devotion to the corporate motherland and we actually perceive any of you who've been gaming more than a year to be a hostile entity as you've been exposed to the internet and 'dangerous ideas'.
