Flayed Ones had a prototype for the Fear rule. SURE it wasn't great, but it made sense, and them not having it currently makes little sense.

A) Twelve man Drop Pods.
B) Generic marines being able to choose to fail Morale tests.
C) The special rules that came with Duke Sliscus and Baron Sathonyx.
D) The rule that forbade you from attacking an opponent that just charged you if you were locked from a previous turn. Did me more good than harm.
E) Gate of Infinity on Tigurius. (Reliably.)
F) Range reducing Night Shields. Oh God, I miss those.

This. Absolutely this. Though the new Techpriest's rule can imitate it, it will never be duplicated.

In addition, "The Sarge is Acting Strangely." My buddies and I used to house rule (along with a couple other rules to balance it) it that EVERYONE coming in from reserves (not just outflank) had to test for it. It was frickin' hilarious to see half my infantry burst into ripper swarms as soon as they hit the table.

I always liked the chart for when the snotling teleports inside the guy's helmet, but he knows what to do and calmly bites the head off the deranged snotling before continuing the battle.

I second some of the old Ork rules like Mob rule and Mobbing up. The recent incarnations of the ork codex have felt a little bland in comparison.

That wasn't a rule since before 4th, unless I've missed something. There was some conpfusion in 5th I recall though.

Zogwart's curse: Roll a die. Your opponent rolls a die. If you roll higher, replace your opponent's Draigo model with the squig you bring painted up specifically to be Squigdor Draigo, who you bring along every single time you play vs Grey Knights.

God. I had Chapter Master Ultrasquig, Commissar Yarsquig, Squigdor Draigo, and The Squiglord. Zogwart was my signature unit and GW killed him because they were too lazy to say "this fantasy ork shaman model with the staff and the snakes who looks just like Zogwart, HES FRICKIN ZOGWART HERE HAVE A ROUND BASE." Like, five seconds of effort. That's all Zogwart asked.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

1. Power weapons that ignored ALL armor.
2. PAGKs with True Grit.
3. Unsaved wound? I choose where to pull from the unit.
4. Back to 3rd Edition vehicle damage tables. Get rid of Hull points and AP1/2 modifiers and...
5. ...assaulting vehicles based on their facing, NOT always rear armor.
6. Bring back Guess-range weapons. On that topic...
7. ...absolutely no pre-measuring.
8. 4th Edition terrain and LOS rules. No TLOS.
9. Just LESS randomness overall.

And finally...

10. Bring back 3rd Edition-style comp scoring at GTs/RTTs. And then bring back supported GTs/RTTs

Krieg! What a hole...

Medusa Siege gun having 120'' range and the Barrage rule, back in 5th.

That was only for the Death Korps and it was awesome.

Oh and pinning for anything Barrage, good times.

Unless it was from Rogue Trader, that's never been a 40K rule. The closest was the 2nd ed Ork Battlewagon, which allowed you to transport as many orks as you could pile on top, but they took a wound if they fell off.

Yea now that I think about it properly it may have been a first edition fantasy rule. Back in those days everything is mixed up in my head

I have met a cool homebuilt battlewagon that was made just to pile as many orks on top of it as possible. They did tend to fall off tho, so it was pretty fun to watch

The 4e SM book. Mix and match bits and pieces to make your own Chapter, and Chapter Tactics came with drawbacks.

The dark behind the eyes.

- 5th edition wound allocation

- the 5th edition rulebook

- Urien Rakarth's 'Meld the Flesh rule'. I really don't see why this needed to be changed to IWND (5+). This really annoys me because his regeneration is such a huge part of his fluff - it's the whole reason he looks the way he does. And as rules go, it's hardly adding a great deal of complexity - all you're doing is making it IWND (1+).

- The complete lack of a challenge mechanic

- Choosing psychic powers

- The non-existence of snapshots

- When Fear didn't exist, and hence wasn't shoehorned into every new book

A few things that I miss from fifth:

Pinning from Barrage, Pinning from Sniper Rifles, charge range, and wound allocation.

The Orks in 7th are really bland compared to the previous version. I'd like to see Ramshackle, Zogswort, old version of mob rule, among other rules, returned.

I really liked the old Imperial Guard army thing that you chose traits. It would make for awesome fluffy stuff and you could more easily recreate the different regiment (Tanith, Catachan, Cadian, etc.).

- Leadership, Willpower, Cool and Intelligence being separate stats.
- Movement scores, amazing to think stuff could move at different rates
- Madboyz from 1st edition
- models picking individual targets (just needed a way to pass off hits among members of the same squad to stop sniping)
- overwatch as reaction fire
- flying models at different flight levels
- vehicles with the same basic profile as other models

1. Farseers being the most badass thing in the game.
2. Terminators being unreasonably hard to kill.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

To each their own, but next to the ridiculous HtH rules, those darn things were my least favorite part of 2nd edition. Forced Guardians to fire one at a time, could jam on a miss, and still only generated one hit 33% of the time.

That being said, if the results had been Jam, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 (two 3's, instead of two 1's) that would help. And only rolling them on a successful hit would cut down the confusion and wasted time.
