Well, I'm looking forward to seeing how you write the conflict hooks.

Ebooks are not ideal for me, but if the stories are each short enough, I could do it. Oddly, I can read nonnarrative text, like a codex or background passage, as ebooks, but just can't immerse myself I to stories. For your line up of authors, I am surprised there won't be any paperbacks or hard copies.

Glad we will soon be getting the novels. When you say hardbacks, are you referring to a rule book, or are there hardback novels coming?

Sorry, I meant hard copies, rather than hard covers. They are trade paperback format.

If there is demand for a collection in print form, we would like to release it, but even for the most famous authors, short story collections sell at a tiny fraction of the volume of novels, so at this stage in our company's life, it would be difficult for us to justify.

That's odd. I tend to prefer short stories as a way to discover new authors or settings. Alastair Reynolds' writing is much better in the short story format from my experience, too.

How will you know of the demand is there?

Also, would a publisher like Osprey, with their Frostgrave anthology paperback and full color historical fluff books, be someone to work with?

I love reading - and writing - short stories, but in general collections of short stories in paperback tend not to sell as well as novels. We've had some amazing writers contribute stories for the collection, so we'd love to put out a book collecting all of their amazing work plus the stuff that Steve and I have been doing for the Kickstarter campaign.

If we see a) lots of sales of the paperback novels and b) lots of sales of the ebook collections, then we may be able to justify a paper copy of the short story collections - I'd certainly love to do that, but the cost of printing, storing and posting those books is a significant chunk of change, and right now every penny we have is going into getting the box set out there into the hands of our backers.

We've chatted with a lot of publishers but with this kind of thing partnering with another company doesn't really help make it more cost-effective to put a book out - it's harder in some ways as there's more logistics to pay for.

We'd love to get a big fat Maelstrom's Edge anthology into your hands in the future. Best way for that to happen is for people to read the ebooks and paperback novels and, if they like what they've read, tell all their friends!

Sounds fair. I'll definitely get the paperbacks and the ebook collection (will your stories from the campaign be included?), as well as a good fluff bible/codex/art book (Unless the prices hit BL LE crazy levels). Maybe I'll see what it would cost to print the stories out somewhere, if that's what it takes.

Now that I think about it, if you want the collections to really move, you'll have to add some Paranormal Romance content and a half-naked cowboy with a tiger on the cover.

We appreciate the support. We plan to release all of the stories, from the Kickstarter campaign, the audiobooks, our guest authors and a few others of mine and Stephen's that haven't been seen in the wild yet.

Without knowing a lot more about Karist theology, I remain unconvinced. To me, it sounds a lot like the old 40k IG chestnut of "local leader is crazy," which hardly needs much rule book fluff space devoted to it.

Different factions of the same religion coming to blows doesn't require either side to be crazy. Look at the history of Ireland, or the craziness that's been going on for years in Central Africa between the Muslims and Christians (which are, at their core, still essentially the same religion).

Scale that up massively as would happen on a galactic scale, and you have more than enough room for extreme schisms that result in factions within the faction who just can't get along.

Sure, that could work. That would need to come along with a huge heaping of backstory for what the Karists actually believe and how they interact with other factions. At this point, I'm waiting for stuff to develop.
