Just watched Stalingrad (the 2013 one about Russians rather than the 2014 one about Germans. I want to see that but it's only readily available in badly dubbed English, I'd prefer subtitles on foreign films), and it leaves me very conflicted. I should love it, the acting was good, the writing was mostly fine, the visuals were bang on (apart from a rather ridiculous overuse of slo-mo and some questionable fighting moves), but there's just two points that soured the experience of what was otherwise a fantastic film.

One is a scene where
Spoiler:
in order to hit some Germans that are out of sight, the Russians take their last shell in what looks like a 75-80mm gun and 'bounce' the it off a wrecked Panzer to hit them. Now I get that the whole point of tank armour is to deflect glancing blows, but all I could do was laugh as the shell ricochets perfectly into the German lines. It was just so maddeningly unrealistic that I couldn't take it seriously.

The other is a very questionable (and I'd say unneeded) romantic sub-plot between the lead German officer and a Russian woman, it didn't do anything for his character and was just dead time in an otherwise tight and well-paced film, and didn't really fit with the feel that well either

If you can get past those bits, though, it's an excellent film.

Watching "Cloud Over the Hill" (Saka no Ue no Kumo) which is a 13 part movie series about the meji restoration and the eventual war between the Russian Empire and Japan.

So far it is pretty good. The mains characters are training and taking part in the modernization of the Japanese army at the time. Soon to come will be the famous cavalry skirmishes between the 2 nations and the famous naval battle between the empires and more.

It has to be one of my favorite conflicts in history so seeing a series about it is pretty cool. Although it is 19 hours long...

Well worth the watch.
