Engaging the customer base means listening to their requests and complains. If the first rule is "be positive", that means no criticism allowed of any kind. So in the end they're not engaging their customer base, only the "always positive" crowd among their customer base.
So in the end, all is fine and nothing is broken, and nothing changes.
As others have said, it's very easy to criticise and remain positive at the same time. There's nothing wrong with them not wanting their Facebook page to end up like this place.

You should have pointed out that "real game" is a contradictio in adjectivis (a contradiction of terms).

This is how I see it.
- It is a public group and you have to use a (non anonymous) facebook account.
- It is spammed by GW;s advertising.
- It is heavily moderated to be all gw positive
- You can only talk to GW's social media team + the other users.
Thats my fear tbh.
That its essentially just another Social Media avenue for sales :(
I'd love if they created a "feedback" sub page (and obviously deleted the inevitable vitriol) - but took on board active and constructive ideas and actually fed it back internally.
If this is just more " GW is cool" stuff, then its a step (albeit a very small one) in the right direction but missing the mark.

So no change then they only want to hear from scycofants.
Until they grow a backbone and face legitimate critique there can be no progress.

I pretty much agree with this. They wanted free advertising and an echo chamber. Anyone who tries to make it anything more will quickly be banned and branded forever as a heretic.

Facebook is just another popular medium.
I would not expect a radical change in communication due to a change of venue.
It would be nice to see a bit of dialogue rather than monologue however.
On the topic of FLGS GW hate: I am just happy people get out and are social.
Heck, I will even call Magic players my brothers and sisters.

It looks like something may be happening after all:
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2016/03/bombshell-games-workshop-returns-to-organized-play.html
Details are still limited, but I'm surprised this isn't on their facebook page. This could potentially be the biggest news for 40k in 5-6 years when GW decided to take a backseat. From what others are saying, GW will be taking the reigns going forward to create a competitive ruleset? Does this mean they will creating a baseline & balancing everything around it?

Can't imagine why any company anywhere would want stuff you can find on the forums on their fan page, I completely understand their policy.
Now I just hope some random bitter individuals don't flame the page causing GW to close it's doors once more. Small steps, this moderated FB fan page is such a thing.

I think GW has pretty much ignored most things thrown at them so I figure they will carry-on regardless.
I have experienced the "joy" of a recently heavily edited Facebook page with Palladium Books for Robotech so GW has it within their power to clamp-down on the nastiness as much as they see fit.
Let us look at it as a form of "outreach" and see where this rabbit hole leads.

Can we just lobby for them to hire a 'rules manager' or some such?
That person could liase with the development team, and answer questions from players (FAQ updates actually answering questions that the players have would be good...)

We CAN, it's just that, for a while now, GW has turned a completely deaf ear to anything their customers have said. I will say there appears to be the beginning of some new trends there, so maybe things are starting to turn. If the BOLS article is right and GW is finally beginning to take an interest in organized play again, this would almost be a necessity. At that point, I'd dust off my models and actually make some effort to play again...

Organized play can then allow them to "discourage" use of bits and bobs that are not GW parts.
Plus holding out a carrot of appearing in their magazines and facebook page may get a bit more competitiveness and publicity out there.
I would say that them committing to organized play shall force the issue of dealing with cave-face draconian... er, decurion lists.
By taking ownership of organized play I think a few helpful thought processes in rule design shall result.
<edit> And to think I was always one of those negative types... probably because I have gone into hibernation with 40k that I am happy to see a spark of change no matter how slight.

Them not allowing you to use their social media marketing platform as your sounding board for complaints is hardly unique.
They're there to engage with customers by publishing their new items or events, etc. Not to listen to the relentless droning of angry ex-customers, lol.

Not really because they only care about the fanboys who are not representative of the community, this could of let them see why sales are dropping so they could clearly understand the issue and work to fix it.
There's no positive way to say I cut my spending because prices raise to high to often for me to keep up, or I don't play because the games fundamentally imbalanced.
It's just more "shut up and buy our stuff or gtfo" which is what got us in this sorry state in the first place, GW don't know best they just think they do.

The basic concept of social media is that it allows the company to have a dialogue or ongoing conversation with current and prospective customers.
In this respect, criticism is as valuable as, possible even more useful than praise, and shouldn't be deleted from the page.
Of course that doesn't mean GW should tolerate rude nonsense.
