Damn that's a good trailer. Makes me really want to watch.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

Sorry Nolan but I'll get my British history from the new Transformers movie thankyouverymuch.

Trailer looks good though.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Looks good.

Hopefully the film will do the trailer justice.

When I heard Mel Gibson was directing The Passion of the Christ, I was expecting the British to somehow be responsible for the Crucifixion.

Neither of those was as bad as the blatantly rabidly anglophobic propaganda that is Braveheart.

Braveheart is so historically inaccurate it might as well be relabelled to fantasy.

My grandfather was at Dunkirk.

He never got over it... Was a far more horrific event than people think. Especially following the lightning withdrawal that preceeded it.

Hope he treats it with the respect it deserves. Plus it is nice to see this period of the war for once.

The British helmets are the wrong colour though...

I thought the Patriot was worse in that regard than Braveheart. The English were famously brutal to the Scots. (probably went both ways, really)

This is true. I enjoy Braveheart the same way I enjoy Gladiator, or even games of Blood Bowl.

I'm assuming that this will focus on the rear guard to an extent? ...But with minimal French participation unfortunately.

Saying that, is there any films of the events from a German perspective at all? I did like A Bridge Too Far for doing that; though an entire movie based on the early war from the Axis standpoint would be nice (there's a late-war Hungarian movie from their perceptive that looks good, but WWII films tend to focus heavily on the Allies).

Delighted to see this.

I did my Duke of Edinburgh award community section (yanks won't know what this is!) at a local nursing home as a kid and formed a friendship with a Kings Own Scottish Borderers veteran who was at Dunkirk and later on the Burma campaign. We stayed friends for around 10 years until his death, he had no family to visit and I used to go round every Sunday to smoke cigarettes and watch old war films. He was a tough old bazdack, a career soldier who was in the army before war broke out and many years after who died alone.
Towards the end of his life the staff in the home tried to keep him in as he was unsteady on his feet but he made it his job to escape once a week and make his way up the road to the local British Legion for a sneaky pint of Smithwicks. I used to get a phone call from the nurses to go and bring him back. Great times with a great man. He loved war movies and would have loved this.

Private William Shaw, Kings Own Scottish Borderers.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember him. Sleep well old buddy.

Unlikely that you'll ever see a German film about Dunkirk. German films rarely exhibit the glory in war, so they tend to be about sombre things like the Stalingrad disaster or the Battle of Berlin and avoid anything depicting Germany resplendent, essentially the opposite of Hollywood. Same reason you'd never see a `Battle of Britain` style film/series about the airmen who defended Germany from Allied terror bombing even though 190s and 262s against B17s would be awesome on film. German filmmakers also attract criticism if they can't find some way to reference the Holocaust in every historical war production, so even less chance of seeing anything pre 1942.

Had to do a similar thing back in high school. Interviewed a guy who went to Korea at 19. He pointed to black spots all over his legs - shrapnel from a NK mortar which took out the man next to him and was too fine to be completely removed in surgery. Never felt so lucky to be born when I was.

I think I might go see this when it comes out. I'd love to see more of the French involvement in the rearguard action, but I doubt the film will dwell on the French very much. The British like to think of Dunkirk as "their" battle, even though quite a few French soldiers were evacuated as well, and the majority of the rearguard force was French.

Still, the film looks well made, and I'm not getting a "Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor" vibe from this at all. It probably won't make much of an impact on this side of the Atlantic, though. We Americans like to pretend that the only countries that showed up to World War 2 were the US and Germany.

Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)

But isn't that historical fact?

As an American I have been raised to believe that the British spent the war hiding in subway tunnels, the French gave up after the first shot was fired and the Russians were on Hitlers side.

Oh, and that Japan is the root of all evil. Now if you don't mind I'm going to play some Nintendo.

The new, official main trailer is live! Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

Will probably watch this ten times at the cinema. If you want more war films to be made, I'd advise my fellow dakka members to do the same.

The trailer looks very good. Lot of suspense in there.

That second trailer does look fantastic. Wonderful palette and tone to the whole thing, very intense, and lots of gratuitous shots of Spitfires being awesome. That'll do me!

Yeah, the cinematography is first class. We're getting an air, land, and sea, perspective from start to finish.

I need to watch this on IMAX.

We've obviously seen a lot of German fighters and bombers, but we've yet to see any German infantry or Panzers.

I hope we see some Panzers in the film.

I also hope to see some Panzers but I have a feeling we won't. It will probably be focused mostly on the heroic efforts of the civilians who made the trek and the adversity they had to face getting back home with the Luftwaffe nipping at their heels. I'm not expecting any kind of grand land battle with this one.

Looks very good, seems they film parts of that not far from home down in Dorset at Weymouth. Looks like they've just took all the cars out of the harbour area for filming mind. Lol.

Strange to see the harbour pavilion building which is pretty new, it's the big light blue building which clashes with the era setting. Not a big problem but it's the little details that add or take away at times .

Never understood why they didnt make a modern ww2 film based of those classics.

Topgun was cheesy/inaccurate in places but boy did it have some awesome air to air fights. Imagine what they could these days doing a refight.

It's out this Friday, and yes, I have my tickets booked

As plenty of people have said, If you want more war films, especially early war, then go and see it. The studios love money, and if this makes a ton of cash, then we'll get more films like this.

Ealing Studios did a remarkable Dunkirk film in1958. The seascape scenes were made especially authentic by being filmed in the sea at Camber Sands. The British Film Institute has commissioned a remaster of the original footage and is showing it at a pop-up beach cinema at Camber Sands in September.

That review definitely stands as the odd one out (although I guess ultimately it is just one person's opinion)

Slightly concerned about the comments about the descent into patriotism at the end of the film, as was hoping for something a bit darker and pragmatic, although I'm sure it will stop short of Spielberg-type clenched fist and powerful anthems with a faded out flag flying in the background.

So does it show the role played by the French rear guard? Because I think part is needed to show the complete Dunkirk story.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
