Thanks Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll & gobert!!

Had to get a new PC so couldn't do proper updates - started with the CSM Greater Possessed for the monthly Dakka Challenge, and got them a lil buddy off ebay - a metal 90ies CSM champ:

Need to find an spare left arm / weapon & backpack for him now, ugh.

The Lumineth character turned out really well, I really enjoy how vibrant your style of painting is with them.

Keen to see the possessed finished for the challenge, coming along really well so far!

Welcome back! Lovely painting here - I know it was years ago but I really like that white to red armour concept for your Marines.

Possessed looking very promising already!

Thanks for looking and commenting everyone! This was a somehow tedious month, so I didn't get much done - should have been less stressful as I didn't have to teach at Uni in March, but I guess pandemic fatigue etc. just had piled up. Meh.

Thank you! I really need to get back to my Marines, I still like the concept myself, but somehow I need to find a more fun process to get more of them actually done :p

Here's one of the Possessed finished, the other one needs an evening more or so and getting the bits for the olde champ is more complicated than I thought, oh well.

I've assembled a box of Sisters of the Thorn for April's Dakka painting challenge - judging from the number of podcasts I listened to in the meantime this was about 4 hrs of clipping and removing mold lines and gluing and cursing but they're pretty amazing minis, I still hope GW finds a way to integrate them back into whatever Sylvaneth become whenever they flesh out the Kurnothi ... at least with the new gal for the WHQ box it seems like there's a place for halfway 'mortal' aelfs in the faction ...

OK so as there are quite some organic surfaces to paint on the deer I'm finally trying oils! Or something like this, got a set of Winsor Newton water mixable oil colours, for a start. The last time I really used oil paint was as a teen in the 90ies (and never on minis, just on canvas) but yeah, loving it so far, pretty sure I'm going to somehow incorporate this in my painting process for blending on larger areas. (I guess that's something airbrush would be just as useful for, but that's not really feasible in my tiny home office / flat ...)

Thanks Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll & Captain Brown!

Not much of a hobbying month as uni started again ...
Finally done with oils on the deer, three are already waiting for the matte varnish to dry, gonna do some detailing + washes tomorrow.
Went for individual fur colours for all five, they're magical critters after all plus I had fun mixing colours.

Also assembled most of the Cursed City minis, that's the gray mass in the background!

Don't think I'll finish more than the banner bearer til Friday for the Dakka challenge, but they're all slowly coming together, at least

Excellent stuff here, you paint with the vivid colours of old-school Citadel, but with modern techniques. Great stuff all around.

Stag riders are coming along nicely.

Going back a page, I'm a big fan of the Iron Golems. I particularly like the greenish coin/scale mail elements hanging from them, do you have the recipe for that effect?

Thanks Thumpingbear! Yeah I got into GW stuff in the early 90ies before quite a long hiatus, so much of this is somehow translating 'red period' aesthetics into today's painting styles. ^^

About the Iron Golems, the coin parts were quite straightforward - my paints are quite over the place so I'll just use generic paint names:
# Base Layer - Anthracite / dark gray
# Layer - Bronze
# Thin Layer - Bronze/olive green mix - olive green wash should also work
# Bit of shading in the recesses with anthracite, might also have been Vallejo black ink
# Bit of highlighting with Bronze
I also picked out the little joints between the 'coins' with black and then steel, this made quite a difference in the end.

Finished the banner bearer gal:

Quite happy how she turned out, hope I'll manage to finish the other 4 eventually :p

Picked a Craftworlds Vyper for the next Dakka painting challenge, "From Ages Past". Should fit because it's not only Eldar tech and kinda ancient by default, but it's also one of the oldest Citadel plastic kits still around (maybe even *the* oldest?) - from something around 1998, when I also bought it. Must have been somewhere before I went to uni, I remember picking it up in a big media store alongside an obscure Blur remix CD ^^ Anyway, like most stuff I got in the 90ies I never finished painting it, so let's have another go at this. First of all, the gunner got a new head (leftover bit from the Wood Elf cavalry kit). And, more importantly, a neck!
Then, weathering, to make it even more fitting for the "From Ages Past" theme. There's a lot of great rusty Eldar vehicles on the internet but somehow I don't feel like these should be made out of metal, so I'll much rather be going for something more organic - started slathering GW crackle paint on some spots and building up vines that'll be crawling across the hull. Let's see how this works out!

Hmmm, not unhappy about where this is going. Going to maybe add some more weathering effect paints near the vines & exhausts later? The gems & the 'techy' details are next, though.

Beautiful job on the banner bearer. Everything from the freehand to the blending to the basing turned out great.

The vines on the hull is an extremely interesting idea. I have never seen that before. I like the way it is blending into the hull with the cracks and weathering. Very cool way to mix the futuristic Eldar with the fantasy Elven tie to nature.

Thanks a lot The Riddle of Steel!! YouWaShock here on Dakka is doing some really interesting Wood Elf Exodites, if you haven't seen them https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1350/657264.page#11043176

I still have a metal RT era Eldar Dreadnought that will get the same creepy vines treatment, but as it's the most basic version with just the wrist-mounted shuriken catapults and no heavy/cc weapons I'll need to get some newer stuff to kitbash it with, and I really shouldn't buy moar minis right now :p

The finished cavalry look excellent. I... Don't know how I feel about the evil reindeer models themselves but that's hardly your fault

Vyper is also looking really promising, keep it up mate!

Yeah I've got mixed feelings about the deer, too, I like how super dynamic the sculpts are but just normal antlers might have worked better than the weird ornamental things they have tacked to their heads.

Bit of progress on the Vyper - finished the hull, made the gems extra shiny with gloss varnish, painted the interior + pilot, shoved the entire model from the table accidentally and broke the flight stand, ordered a pin vise, continued painting some Warcry minis from last year, now waiting for the glue to set on the pinned stand so I can finish the Vyper's turret :p

Finished the Vyper! Looks even weirder than I imagined, but I'm not unhappy :p Not sure what I'll do next, I guess finish the last three Iron Golem minis, not much left to do besides some details and the bases.

Cool vyper, it’s like some exodites found a long abandoned bike that somehow still works. Neat job having the canopy still being openable

Thanks gobert! Hmmm, now I'd really like to do some terrain with more overgrown & half-excavated abandoned Eldar vehicles, just gonna add this to my list of potential 'armies on parade' board ideas for now

Finally finished the three remaining mooks from the Iron Golem warband I started last year - have to do a group pic with the others, eventually

... and started this big dude from Cursed City

Spent the rest of my hobbying time assembling Sigmarines and Nighthaunt because ofc I got the Soul Wars box plus the smallest starter box with the other ETB models before they vanish - really like the new Dominion Stormcast so, well, why not add more armies to the grey pile :p

That’s what the grey pile is right? Growing?

Thank you! Yeah weathering metals is somehow one of my favourite things, no wonder the golems are like the first complete unit of anything Warhammer I managed to finish in quite a while ^^

Done with the Ogors, tho:

Spoiler:

These were fun! Could have spent one more week picking out details on the non-zombified guy but maybe it's time to let go :p I hope that GW eventually re-imagines the Ogor infantry in a similar manner, the olde minis aren't horrible but it really shows how they struggled to fit massive duders into a rank'n'file pose.

Think I'm gonna paint some CSM next, have to tidy my working space first and assemble some stuff :p

The ogres are great, loads of character, and the mini diorama in the pics is cool. Are the bases ones you’ve made or did they come sculpted to match the game tiles?

 gobert wrote:

Yeah I made the bases with green stuff and some texture paste from GW and Vallejo. Was a bit of an experiment as I usually like to slap lots of static grass and tufts on bases but I'm quite happy, apart from not managing to get the colour 100% right :p
Forgot to take WIP pics but I'll post some when I'll get to the other Cursed City minis!

In the meantime! Assembled a Venomcrawler for the July Dakka competition, had parts of this thing lying around on my table for months (... and used the base to wipe off excess texture paint, lol)

And because my Dominion box arrived today and I've got no impulse control, I built a couple of minis already while listening to podcasts.

Wanted to see how they scale up - interestingly Yndrasta isn't heroically HUGE but just a 'normal' sized Stormcast. The new heavy unit (in the back) is a bit larger than the others. Included a champ from Soul Wars and the knight gal from Cursed City for reference. Looking forward to painting these, I think I'll go for a rather rough scheme of darker metal / grimy off-white cloaks / green + blue tabards like some olde sisters of Sigmar I painted last year
