Totally. Rules should have a fruitful void rather than attempt to force things. Like how poker produces bluffing rather than having a bluff game "move.".

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Great example! I tried for ages to write a poker-based miniatures game. The mechanics worked, but i dropped it in the end because the mechanics didn't fit the fantasy setting and there's already a glut of Wild West games on the market.

Have you seen the new Batman traitor game? It uses a poker hand mechanic, although I find it to be excessively slow compared to something like Werewolf.
