And now the final Gnoll archers are done. I might go back and redo some of the skin on this pair as there's not enough definition for my liking, maybe a black wash would be more suitable for this skin colour. Ah well that's something to have a think about while I paint other things.

Here's a group shot of the archers.

So as I said yesterday next up is Gorechosen, I've already made a start, no photos yet though, as the light has got too bad for photos. As with the Gnolls I'll be painting this selection of Khornate crazies one at a time. I think they really need it too, there's a lot of detail on these minis.

And a fine pack of hunters they are. Perhaps it is the photo, but their snots show too little contrast for hyenas. However, the dark-faced ones are a nice contrast to the rest. Maybe try not a black wash, but rather a few bits of highlight instead? Brows, some cheek spots? I don't know how shallow are details on this kit and therefore how much hassle it would be - I'd like to get these little vermin for myself...

I think you could be right, I certainly have been thinking about doing the noses a darker colour as per real hyenas. I'll have a think and maybe try a couple of ideas out and see what works.

If you're looking to darken up the gnolls, I'd suggest a brown wash rather than black. Something like AP soft tone would give you a little shading without obscuring the base colors.

The lighter two skin tones do have a brown wash which I think works pretty well it's the darkest skin tone that I'm thinking about a black wash for.

Would a wash show up on that? You might be better off with some highlighting instead.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you deal with those Khornate guys. I like the models, but I don't really have any use for them so I can't justify picking any up for myself. So I have to enjoy them by proxy.

I'll have a play with different techniques at some point, see what works best.

I have to admit that if there wasn't a board game attached I would never have even looked at the Gorechosen minis. These days I play a lot more board games than I do wargames so Gorechosen should see lots of play time. The fact that it's got minis I can paint is simply a nice bonus.

Gnolls are looking good dude.

Looking forward to seeing the Gore Chosen stuff.

Looks like you grabbed some tea bargains with some interesting vehicles too, looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

Well that's a strange subtitle for this post.

I'm off work today due to a sickness bug so rather than spend all my time watching awful daytime television I've spent some time painting. Ok I had to stop every few minutes to go dry heave over a sink but hey that just gave the paint time to dry.

Anyway I've painted some Gnoll noses. I also found a nice way of highlighting the darkest skin tone (1:1 mix of leather brown and beige brown) without making it too light.

Finally here's a WIP image of the first mini from Gorechosen, Heldrax Goretouched

Nice work. Darkening the gnolls' snouts really makes a difference.

I can't wait to see the Gorechosen guy all finished.

Thanks and I am really happy with how well a small change like the noses has improved the look of the minis. Of course it added yet another paint to the group I use to paint these gnolls (I think I'm up to 15 different paints now) but that's not too bad because it's about a minute of extra work per mini to actually do that job.

I have done a bit more work on the first gorechosen mini, no photo though because my camera needs to be recharged. It's a really detailed mini so it's taking a lot longer than anything else I've shown in this thread. It's also freaking massive, easily 1.5 times the height of a gnoll and a lot bulkier.

Yeah, that and the expense are why I have resisted getting any AoS minis. Nothing would scale well with my existing collection.

Yeah there are some minis in the AOS range that actually interest me but if Gorechosen is anything to go by I won't be getting any to use with my other fantasy stuff it's just too big. Oh well it's not like there's a shortage of good fantasy minis and historical minis suitable for fantasy gaming.

EDIT: Managed to finish the first Gorechosen mini this morning:

I'm pretty happy with how this mini has come together, it took a lot more work than anything else I've painted recently but I'm very happy with the finished result.

Thanks, time for a random mini. Painted up mini from the Black Hat range to give to the dungeon master of the D&D campaign I'm playing in. I figured a nice mini he could use in the campaign would make a reasonable way of saying thank you for running it.

So here's an evil wizard:

[necromancer voice] Arise arise foul thread and do my bidding upon this mortal plane!!!!![/necromancer voice]

Well I let this thread die for a while. Took a bit a break from painting over the Christmas period, truth be told I kinda burnt out after painting what for me is a large number of minis in a short period of time. However I feel a bit recharged now and I'm ready to start work again. I really need to paint more Gnolls and finish Gorechosen off but I've been distracted by another small project. Over Christmas I got a copy of the Rogue Stars rulebook and there's no way I'm not putting together a squad for that game. So for the next week or two my focus will be on my first Rogue Stars squad, The Claw of Eternal Night.

The first two minis for this squad are a pair of mutants.

The Twins

Pilot

For more about this squad and these two mutants in particular I've posted a dedicated squad fluff/roster/photo sharing thread over in the misc sci fi games forum (ooh look at my blatant self promotion ). Go check it out here and if you're working on your own Rogue Stars projects feel free to add to it I really want to see what all the talented painters and writers on Dakka can do for this ruleset.

Hopefully I'll get the bits I've ordered to build the rest of the squad in the next few days I'm really itching to get stuff done for Rogue Stars. I've honestly not felt this fired up about a game for years.

Arise foul thread come forth and do my evil bidding. Mwahahahahahahaha. *coughs*

Sorry about that little bit of necromancy, it's been ages since I posted anything. Been busy doing non painting and modelling stuff namely looking after two little cuties (click the spoiler for bunnies) who were my 30th birthday present to myself back in March and have taken up a lot of my time.

Spoiler:
Meet Esme

and Gimli

Anyway I recently bought a 3d printer (this one) to mess around with and my first thought was to start making small pieces of scatter terrain for the dungeons and dragons campaign I'm playing in. All we have at the moment is drawn maps and our own minis, so some small terrain pieces would really go a long way to making the games look better. Being a typical D&D player my first thought was loot, because of course it was. So I made a basic treasure chest in Blender and printed it out.

Since I only have a basic printer I can only do basic details but for a first attempt at designing anything for 3d printing and first thing I've done in 3d modelling software for about 10 years I'm really happy about how it came out. The first attempt at printing was a failure, but a couple of small changes and the next print came out really well and is what you see above. I do need to do some more work to have a completely finished model but I need to actually get my hands on some liquid filler before I can even thing about getting it nice and smooth for painting. Next up on the printer (30% printed as I type) is a basic crate (again a source of loot?). It's got a bit more detail than the chest so I'm hoping it comes out well.

So it's been a week since my first attempts at printing anything. The crate I mentioned in my last post printed really nicely and I also printed a slightly higher quality version of the treasure chest.

Obviously they still need some work with removing the remainder of the brim that secured them to the print bed and filling and smoothing them too.

However I was feeling up for a challenge and decided to attempt something that pushed all my very basic design skills to their current limits. So here fresh off the printer is a simple 2 wheeled cart in it's component parts still attached to the raft that the printer can use to keep stuff fixed to the bed (mine doesn't have a heated bed).

This will need a load of work to get it clean up and ready to use but I'm really happy that I was able to take the skills my previous designs have taught me and apply them to something much more complex than a simple box. Now I just need to clean it up and assemble it, which is definitely easier said than done!

Well I got the cart assembled, had to reprint the wheels because the originals were too small. Upping the diameter by 25% did the job.

Well I'm still waiting for liquid filler so there's not much I can do with my previous prints until I get it. Why did I order the new D&D spell cards at the same time, I should have known they would be delayed or out of stock everywhere.

In the mean time I'm changing from fantasy to science fiction and trying something a lot more ambitious. A hover tank, something of a cliché of sci fi vehicle design but it's been fun so far. I'm still a long way from being able to print anything but I thought I would share my progress.

As you can see it really is basic at the moment. I'm happy with the main engines as they currently stand, I plan to add smaller thrusters at the front and sides to make it look like is has some form of directional control (something similar to an RCS on spacecraft). The big thing that I'm really struggling with is the design of the hover system/ground repulsers/lifting engines/whatever else you want to call them. I've got a few ideas that I want to try so they'll probably be what I work on next.

After I sort out the hovering stuff I will probably move on to the turret and weapons and then finally start going crazy on details and stuff like that. When I eventually come to print it, I intend to do it to about 20mm/1:72 scale because that's a scale I've wanted to try for some time.

And I ignored this thread for a month again.

To be fair I've not had anything to post but oh well.

Enough stupidity from yours truly on to the good stuff. I've found something that has completely reinvigorated my desire to do hobby stuff beyond playing around with Blender and a 3d printer (not that I plan on stopping that I'm having a lot of fun with it), Flintloque. For those who don't know what Flintloque is, it's a fantasy napoleonic skirmish game produced by Alternative Armies. The rules and background have their tongue firmly placed in their cheek and indulge in a staggering number of puns (ranging from actually funny to physically painful). The mini's are to be honest fairly simplistic by modern standards but have loads of character, perfect for someone like me who is getting a little bit fed up of struggling to paint the insane amount of detail on a lot of modern minis (looking at you GW). I've started to dip my toes into this system with the Beir and Bones starter set which pits the varied forces of the Confederation of Finklestein against the dwarves of Krautia.

I'll apologise now for the dark photos, I don't have anywhere decent to set up my camera and even if I did the battery is knackered and I need to replace it. So unfortunately I had to use my phone camera. Anyway enough of my rambling on to the photos.

Finklestein Dwarves:

Finklestein Ogres

Krautians 1:

Krautians 2:

That's all I've got for the moment but based on how much fun I had painting this lot I have some more Flintloque minis coming my way soon.

I should also have some 3d printed stuff to show off at some point, I've started working on some basic scenic items and have a selection of fence parts printing as I type. I'll post some photos once the printer has done it's thing and I've cleaned them up. Who knows I might even paint something I print soon.

I'm not sure this counts as a small project, ok there's only one but it is pretty huge compared to everything else I've posted so far. Since everything is a bit quiet I took an afternoon off work and after heading to a DIY store for a few bits and pieces I've built myself a nice 4'x4' games table.

It's a pretty simple design, 2 kitchen cabinets back to back with a top made of 2 4'x2' sheets of 12mm chipboard. All of that lot is held together with a lot of brackets and screws. Once I had that done I glued some foam underlay (those green sheets in the right of the photo) on top to act as sound deadening. Finally I covered the whole top with blue pool table cloth. I think it took me about 4 hours to put together and cost about £80. I might finish the table off by adding an edge to the top but that's something I can add later if I want to.

Now I just need to clean that room up and get some chairs in there so I can start gaming.

Time to reply to myself. I've finally finished the Flintloque minis I started earlier this week. I think I have even managed to take a half decent photo. So here are some pugs.

Edit:

Apparently what appears to be a good photo on my phone doesn't work so well here. So here's another photo hopefully this one is a bit better
